I was scrolling down on youtube, suddenly this video appeared exactly when I need guides/tutorial for surf music. Because I have plan to form a Surf rock band but with relatively cheap/midrange equipment because I'm just a high school student. Thanks for the tutorial, you got my respect, sir.
@@minnixmusic He even had a switch to do so. I spent years trying to work out how he got THAT SOUND from his strat. It was those two pick ups together minus the middle pick up
I have been a fan of surf guitar ever since I first heard it in the 1960s. If you have Sirius XM, they have a channel devoted to surf music, both new & old.
I was around at the time, when in the early 1960s "Surf Guitar" existed but had yet to have the name applied to it. George Tomsco and the Fireballs were, in my opinion, the principle pioneers of the "sound" and their recordings remain among the very best! A good, informative video, which all enthusiasts should listen to.
I've got a surfybear classic. Great unit. In my opinion it's absolutely essential for "that" sound. On board reverb just won't cut it. And this is coming from a Twin Reverb owner. I also think flatwounds really help getting that sound.
I've got the Surfy Bear Classic ,which sounds good, and expensive, but I keep coming back to the Boss '63 Fender Reverb Pedal with a Source Audio True Spring behind it. The Surfy Bear, like the original Fender Reverb Tank , which I had, gets 'ice picky' so quickly it's hard to dial out. Same on both a Jazzmaster and Jaguar from my experience.@@minnixmusic
@@minnixmusic Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate what you are doing. I am grateful you took the time to make this and other videos. I got a chuckle out of Ryan's "Wiggle Stick" term as well. A subtle reminder not to be too rough with the tremolo and go out of tune perhaps though I'm too early into this to really tell. I'll be sure to subscribe and check out your other videos and music. :D
What you are doing with the "wiggle stick", is not tremolo it is vibrato. It modulates the frequency of the sound. The tremolo on the pedal modulates the amplitude (volume) of the sound. It is very confusing because Leo Fender didn't know anything about music and he mislabeled the tremolo and vibrato. He called what is really tremolo on Fender amps, as vibrato and he called the vibrato on a guitar tremolo. Bottom line, they are not the same and give two different effects.
You have to equalize the pressure of the springs and strings and when done right, they never go out of tune. There are several videos on TH-cam showing how to do it. You can even get them to "float" and bend notes up as well and still wont go out of tune. It just takes alot of time to get it in tune after changing strings so stretching them is all important. You dont need a locking tremolo if ya know how to use the old fender tremolo
I'm not done watching this video but have enjoyed it so far. Before I forget, your next instrumental surf song should be titled "Flip the Phase" or "Flippin' the Phase".
They are called Socal pickups and I think they're made by a company called Thompson. But I could be wrong about that. I know Thompson sells them or at least they used to.

It does my heart good to hear young people want to keep this music alive. After you get your band formed send us a link!!!
@@minnixmusic it could be Surf Rock, Alt Rock or Garage Rock Revival tho. I can't define what genre my tone is, but it'll be Rock 'n Roll.
Dick Dale also used his bridge and neck pickups together on his start
I'm glad to know that. Thanks for watching!!

Outstanding video--very helpful. Will definitely be checking out the Fantastic Flying Frogs 🤙🏻
Thanks so much!!!
Thank you. Well done.
Thanks for watching!
Great lesson. Love to learn more about your tremolo picking. Without a pick and you do it fast and make it looks easy.
Thanks for watching. I'll try to make a video about tremolo picking with fingers this week.
That would be amazing. I am very intrested in surf and this was very informative and fun to watch. @@minnixmusic
Super great video. Very informative. I love that guitar you made it sounds great. What are the pickups you used in the 6 string side?
They are called SoCal pickups I usually find them on eBay.
@@minnixmusic Thank you. Also, I forgot to mention great playing
Really interesting

What brand of pickups did you put in your guitar?

The twelve string side are Artec filtertrons.
@@minnixmusic can you buy the Thompson pickups any more?
@@hubridgell4511I believe so. If you Google Thompson socal you should be able to find them.
I've literally never heard it called a wiggle stick
Call your axe the toad...lol.
Love it. Thanks for watching!
Cool, Its a Villager/Strat. Your playing it wrong...Right handed? Whaaa? lol :)

You could call the guitar 'a guitar'

You're right. I should have. I forgot that one. Thanks for watching.
The Beach Boys are NOT surf music. They are pop music.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they would disagree with you on that. And I'm positive Capital Records would disagree with you.b
