I saw Furiosa yesterday. I couldnt convince anybody to see it with me. None of my friends. Not my girlfriend. No one. And I was the only one in the theater… Just no one is interested…
1. People don’t go to theaters anymore unless they think the film is worth it(No Way Home, Spider Verse, Barbenheimer, Top Gun). Tickets are expensive now. It’s much cheaper to wait for streaming than go to a theater 2. It’s a prequel to a character who is not that popular 3. Mad Max itself has always been a niche franchise Those are off the top of my head
"People don’t go to theaters anymore unless they think the film is worth it" this is a really big oversimplification. There are plenty of successes that arent the big tentpoles. Obviously in this case, the biggest movies tend to be the biggest. Theres a big gap from No way home to other box office hits. Audiences are just really picky and fury road wasnt even a big success at the box office in 2015.
#1 is a bigger issue than studios realize. Especially given the movies show up for rent in three weeks, you REALLY have to want to go to the theater to see it. Otherwise, I’m not dropping $100 on a freaking movie at the theater.
I think we need to accept that Mad Max was never as big as we thought it was. 2 movies back to back being bombs is part of a pattern. The originals were more cult classics than anything anyways.
agreed, a lot of people still have never seen the orginal movies, compared to the 80s movies like indiana jones, beverly hills cop, Top gun , back to the future which almost everyone has seen many times.
Mad Max is a niche franchise. Nobody outside of us film geeks are into these movies. In fact the only one I hear general audiences talk about is Thunderdome and that's more likely because Tina Turner's in it.
I 100% agree, plus add in the fact that he decided to tell a story about furiosa which I don’t think anyone cares about this character and it showed at the box office.
George Miller isn’t a director who makes big tentpole films. He’s a visionary who tells stories he’s passionate about, not what he thinks will get huge box office numbers. He’s directed eleven feature films over the last forty-five years and his career spans a wide variety of genres. Furiosa falls in line with the Mad Max franchise, which is to say that it’s not something that general audiences will eat up and enjoy on the level of those who consider Fury Road to be a modern classic. Adding to that, Fury Road is a movie that’s so distinct in its aesthetics, action, and characters that it’s entirely possible that even those who really like Fury Road don’t have enough interest to watch the next film in the franchise. I mean, looking through Sean’s comment sections, I wasn’t seeing much chatter for Furiosa. Of course movie discussion exists outside of Sean’s channels, but that was kind of the general lack of excitement besides Film Twitter. All of this is unfortunate because I thoroughly enjoyed Furiosa and a lot of people who went to see it did as well. The movie theater industry is certainly seeing a decline.
They have to stop making 150-200 million budget movies all the time. Every movie now has to make 500 millions to be successful which is crazy. Horror is a profitable genre because they have small budgets.
Yep Hollywood was thriving when it had 10M comedies and 60M action movies without CGI. They should learn from horror. Most horror movies hit the green.
I remember when many movies were B movies with a 50 million dollar budget and some great writing. Those days are long gone. Even the direct-to-DVD from the 80s and 90s had better writing than we see today.
As a rule of thumb, nowadays even a low budget Horror Film needs to gross more than 100 millions to be succesfull, if released by one of the big studios, cause wide relase marketing will never be less than 50 millions globally and the theatres obviously take their share. The Horror genre has actually been doing pretty bad so far this year, it's been only flops. Even the usually so reliant Blumhouse has tanked in 2024 with "Night Swim" and "Imaginary" both flopping.
I guess there's a burnout on movies altogether, for many reasons. Maybe because the movies last year weren't exactly amazing Maybe people are fed up of movies trying to be smarter/dumber than the movie is supposed to be People are fed up of "forced diversity" for the sake of diversity rather than making interesting characters Some people just have the mindset of "what's the point, it'll be on streaming in a few months so we can save money and not hear people scream every time there's a nostalgia trip"
@@daniellewis3098 no way you can say movies weren’t amazing last year, we had oppenheimer, barbie, the iron claw, the holdovers, poor things, saltburn, killers of the flower moon, the killer, bottoms, as well as some great horror movies like saw x, scream vi, and thanksgiving (i’d even throw beau is afriad in there personally)
@@joeertmanI also think that 2023 is very overhated especially because there were actually lots of great movies, it‘s just the audience won‘t (unfortunatly) spend their money to watch for example Holdovers..
I don't like going to the movies anymore because there are always teenagers or other demographics on their phones and talking through the entire movie. When I was a teenager the theater would kick you out for talking.
With all the flops I think this is why so many studios are putting old movies back in theatres like look at all the re released films this year. The spider-Man movies Star Wars the Phantom Menace the lord of the rings trilogy shrek Alien The mummy Ghostbusters. And many more.
And in general they are getting really small box office. Looks like good money given how bad the original movies are doing, but it isn't something that can sustain movie theaters.
those re relases are coin change to the studios. might be good for the theatres though to actually have some heavily visited screenings once in a while.
Totally agree. If it's still good fans will come out to watch it. Fury road came out 40 years after the last mad Max and still made $400 million. But this new movie didn't get much marketing.
It was good but not great and certainly not better than “anything in the last five years”. This was basically just “Fury Road” lite. It was way too long. But in a world where we never have a mad max wasteland I’m happy it was made (though I’d rather have seen miller just do a max mad series instead and just kept Fury Road as its own little world. It was just so much better as a stand alone).
I feel like it’s just been too long since the last Mad Max movie, add to the fact it’s a Mad Max movie… not about Mad Max. That would be my guess as to why this didn’t make more bank this weekend. Plus the fact of Garfield and that probably pulling in more families maybe even individual family members who would’ve liked to have seen Furiosa instead. The marketing wasn’t the best either.
I don't think the passing of time has as much to do with it as T2 came out 8 years after the original, Aliens 7 years after the original and Top Gun 2 over 30 years after the original, all big box office successes. I think it's more to do with star power. By the early 90s, Schwarzenegger was a huge action star, by the mid-80s, Sigourney was a big draw across multiple genres and by the 2020s, Cruise was also a huge star, Taylor-Joy can't guarantee a massive opening weekend compared to the above 3. Sticking with Charlize Theron for a sequel or having a Gibson-led comeback like Hugh Jackman is doing with Wolverine would've definitely generated more box office than what they've done.
its a shame it did not do well opening weekend. its a great movie !! action scenes where totally awesome ! too much chatter before movie came out on CGi use and yes it should have came out 5 years ago. Millers delay was something about having to go to court or something like that which put a delay on it. And a Mad Max movie with no Max does not make much sense.
The biggest reason for me is simply the price. You can’t justify spending that much on a single viewing of a movie anymore. For me and my gf where we are, it’s 12 dollars a ticket, plus 20 dollars for popcorn and a drink. It’s almost 50 dollars with tax which is just insane
There are memberships now with AMC and Regal so there is no excuse. Also Hollywood voted on this economy to hind their guilt for being friends with for 40 years knowing the psycho he is.
@@nicholasjoseph8297as someone who has regal unlimited, those memberships are only really for us connoisseurs, you can’t expect everyone person to purchase it. The price of a movie ticket is insane, my unlimited has saved me a ton of money but some people who aren’t as big into fandoms as say we are they may not know about it or they think it’s not worth their money to invest in
1.) recession … 2.) prequel 9 years later not named Star Wars 3.) not original IP 4.) trailers just made this look like another girl boss beat em up 5.) Not as mainstream accessible for especially for newer audiences not familiar with franchise
I remember pre-covid during the memorial weekends where our extended family would often do a big cook out and a bunch of us would go to the latest movie at the theater. This year it was a smaller more subdued BBQ and a quick movie on streaming before everyone went home early.
I can only speak for me as an 80’s kid. 1-Never got into mad max (still trying) 2-looked over CG 3- theater costs 4- theater goers (gen z on their phones) Why I did not go
@@JaceDeanLove no joke. Last 2 times I went there were kids face timing their boyfriend/girlfriend/themfriend from the time they bought their tickets at the front til the time they left the theater. Didn’t say a word to their partner on the phone. Just staring at each other. So weird
Most likely cuz 1. A lot of people didn’t want a Furiosa prequel without Mad Max 2. The marketing team was really sleepy for this movie, even the CGI improved from the trailers still looks unpolished I still enjoyed the movie but still, it needed more marketing.
a lot of people did't even want Fury Road. It was barely a success. Modest hit at best. Slight flop at worst. Honestly a miracle the franchise exists considering how long the gap to fury road was. it was in development hell for a long time
For my wife and I, it just mostly comes down to the kids. We used to go to movies religiously before we had kids. But now, finding a sitter, being away that long, and the expense just make it so we have to be so selective about what we go see. It has to be really special in order to justify not just waiting until we can watch it at home.
that's nothing new. people always had to get a baby sitter to go after out of home activities in the past decades. and kids and family movies have been one of the most succesfull genres since a long time because of what you stated. biggest reason for the box office crisis by far is the constant shift in free time culture.
The reason why people aren't going to theaters is because most people find what Hollywood is offering to be lacking in terms of interest from the audience. Also, your theories will be put to the test with Deadpool 3 (a third movie, superhero tropes, rated R and a bad economy.)
Deadpool 3 will make round about a billion. But one counter example doesn't prove him wrong and you'd be very stupid to believe so. As he correctly said, Box Office is down about 40% compared to pre pandemic in terms of total tickets sold. that's a crazy decline, and a few outlier hits (like Barbenheimer last year) do not change that negative trend. In Germany we have a saying "exception's prove the rule", which absolutely applies to this case.
@@derg6222 Funny, almost every reason why Furiosa flopped will be the reason why Deadpool 3 succeeds and you don't want to look at that?! You're just going to say, "it was a fluke, ignore that!" People like you are the worst
@@derg6222 If videos are made on why movies fail, then we should also analyze why certain movies succeed. You realize that's how we can fix problems? If I get 5 questions right on a test, but miss 95 of them, I shouldn't look at why I got 5 right because the exception doesn't make the rule?! 🤡
@@derg6222 Imagine tuning out what that audiences is telling you is good, because "ThE eXCepTIoN doEsN't mAKE tHe rulE." Just sit back, shrug and lose hundreds of millions. 😂😂😂
@@linger4605 no it wasn't a fluke. You are just a very stupid simple person, it's easy to tell. Numbers don't lie, the box office business is in an existential crisis, and one positive outlier won't change that drastical negative trend. It's probably way too late for that, but try to go educate yourself and adapt some sort of abstract thinking.
I went to the theater and did my part. Movie was fantastic and didn't disappoint, not going to say it was better than fury road because honestly it wasn't even close, but it was still amazing and deserves the theater experience. Check it out in theaters guys.
Sucks for them. Those of us who saw it in the theater on the opening weekend without having to fight crowds won big. It was really fun and was great to see on the big screen
Honestly I just think people are losing interest in movies overall unless it’s something that’s trendy or something that everyone is talking about. Movies have so much competition these days in the entertainment landscape (TV, Streaming, Video Games (video games are massive imo especially for younger Gen z audiences).
Sean, I think one thing that is also worth pointing out is that this year's big blockbuster films that I'm hearing people talk about are releasing during the second half of this year. Movies like Despicable Me 4, Twisters, Deadpool, Alien, Trap, Transformers One, Joker 2, Wicked, Beetlejuice 2, Sonic 3, maybe even Venom 3, Moana 2, and Gladiator 2 all release over halfway through the year. Compared to 2023, the only films we seemed to have gotten after June last year was Barbenheimer, FNAF, and Wonka because August-December of last year just didn't seem to offer really anything last year which seems to be the opposite of this year.
use your brain dumbo. the actors were on strike between july to november, hence plenty of blockbusters, Dune 2 for example, got delayed. numbers don't lie, the box office is in a huge crisis.
its a shame. Its actually another solid action flick from miller and isnt preachy or demean men to make the protagonist seem stronger. Its worth seeing for any action fan
Agreed. Meanwhile I was going back and forth with a guy in this comments section who hated Fury Road because Theron’s Furiosa “demeaned” Mad Max I guess and thinks this is just a girl boss movie cause reasons lol
@@BloodeeJacob that's silly. In their first head to head fight, max bested her. THe only scene I can think of where max submitted to her was the sniper scene in the swamp area. Max missed the first two shots, then gave furiosa the last shot which she hit. But immediately after that max, off screen, killed who as left on the tank/car thing and brought back needed supplies from it, including nux's boot. And it was max's idea to return to the citadel which ultimately proved to be the correct decision.
Regarding reason #10, it's amazing how things have changed. I think it taught my generation patience having to wait 6 to 9 months, sometimes longer, to go to the local video rental store and watch Forrest Gump or Lion King or Home Alone or Roger Rabbit, to name a few from my youth. That also was when those movies remained in the top 10 at the box office for months on end. I actually kind of miss that.
Never in my life I could not tell you a movie that opens weekend after weekend in a summer season. 2024 is the most lackluster movie season I’ve ever seen.
To be honest I’m not surprised, it was mainly the fact that they waited 9 years too late to just make a Mad Max spinoff that not many people were asking for as they would much rather have a sequel to Fury Road instead, it also didn’t help that Mad Max isn’t a big enough franchise that appeals to general audiences I mean hell I’m not really that big on Mad Max.
There was a law suit going on between George Miller and Warner Bros. I believe that was finally settled, when Discovery merged with Warner Bros into WBD in 2022 and the new CEO took over with a new strategy on their IPs.
Me and my girl went to see this movie, we check the times before going at 3 different smc theaters. Every single theater and time had less then 5 people in each theater. Craziest thing I've seen
Whatever the reason for people not going to the movies it is not the economy... The economy is doing well overall... The most likely reason is the movies are not top quality and people don't want to waste their time with TV quality movies.
People can make any excuses they want about how movies are performing this year. expensive movie tickets, bad theater etiquette, rather watch at home etc. people just aren’t interested in seeing new movies anymore. People would rather pay to see the Phantom Menace rerelease. A movie that’s been out for 20+ years that majority have owned on physical media and is on Disney plus. Rather than watch a new blockbuster like fall guy or Furiosa. Smh!
phantom menace rerelease is such a small one off that it hardly counts. Worldwide it made 19M. That is basically just as much as the smallest of small movies. youre making it seem like Phantom Menace rerelease outgrossed Fall Guy and Furiosa. It is still a very niche group of moviegoers that will go for these rereleases
I don't think this movie deserved to fail but my hope is that all the prequels/sequels failing will stimulate more original stories. Most of the past year's best films are originals.
One reason that didnt get mentioned is that this movie is long (as most movies are nowadays). 2.5h is a lot, for people to pull a trigger on it is a big ask unless a movie has stellar reviews/word of mouth. But mainly ye it has just way too high of a budget for what Mad Max, especiallly in 2024, is. Its not a mega franchise, its a niche series of movies with Mel Gibson which got a successful (tho not really financially speaking) reboot in 2015 that got a ton of buzz cos effects were awesome and it won a bunch of Oscars. This movie should cost 80 and have effects like sth like The Creator, thats its angle to make money. Thinking it would make 500 mil was risky in 2019, would be outright foolish in post COVID box office. Hell Im pretty sure i saw Fury road twice but its been a decade ago so i have 0 attachment to those characters atm, that dont help things either.
My most anticipated movies: 1. Superman 2. Scream 7 3. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice 4. Twisters 5. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 6. Abigail 7. Deadpool and Wolverine 8. Fantastic Four 9. New Jurassic World
Any studio will already know the higher-risk approach that comes with doing a spin-off than the lower-risk approach of proceeding with a story fronted by the franchise's main character so I think Warner Bros were already bracing themselves when this project was initially greenlit. A guaranteed quick-win profit would be a Gibson-led Max Max sequel or at the very least a Charlize-led Furiosa sequel as her performance was what fans loved most about Fury Road. So by both actively choosing not to do a main character sequel or utilizing the most popular component of Fury Road proves that Warner Bros were fully prepared to make this film for the sake of Miller's vision rather than wanting to actively generate box office with it. I admire them for that in terms of supporting an artist's vision which I wish a lot of other studios would do but at the same time, had either of the previous 2 options come into being, I would've certainly found myself buying a ticket.
I think the same too. They should have done a Furiosa Sequel. Just call it Furiosa. And with Charlize Theron in the role again. That might have worked.
I went to go watch furiosa a few nights ago with my dad and when booking there were at least double the amount of seats full than compared to actual screening 😂
sub optimal marketing and I doubt that Emily Blunt is a mainstream star with a broad box office appeal. still the movie flopped hard. but as Sean correctly points out, 2024 was all flops at the box office, with Dune 2 and Godzilla x Kong being the only decent enough successes.
Sean do you think phones are potentially the main issue. Ever since more “free” (illegal) movie websites have been coming out I think there’s been a significant dip in people wanting to check any movie out at the theaters. There has been so many times in my life friends and family tell me “why go to a theater when I can watch it on my phone”. I think streaming is less of an issue for movies then phones are to be honest. I’d love to know your thoughts.
Doesn’t make sense to go to the movies if it’s going to be on streaming within 2 months 🤷🏾♂️. Only movie I’ll be seeing in theater is Deadpool vs Wolverine. Also it feels like movies are also being pulled away from theaters faster than ever.
I love the theater I go to. I usually end up paying $17 for a ticket, soda, and French fries; with popcorn essentially free with a refillable bucket. Theaters are competing with streaming services. How many services did you include in your latest ranking, Sean? It just now becomes a question which service a theatrically released movie will go to first.
At least give the film another week or two before we deem it a failure. You can't fault the movie’s quality (it was very good), name recognition or even superhero fatigue on Furisosa's problems, so internet culture needs to find any reason to keep this handwringing afloat.
Furiosa was anything but a bad movie- financially it needs $380M to break even, and $70M opening week means Warner Bros will probably lose something, but Dune 2 and GxK profits will make up the losses
I thought this was a great film and definitely a must watch for Mad Max fans. The R rating might be part and also that it's been 9 years since Fury Road came out, which is probably another reason.
I felt it could be polarizing for a mad max fan. People talking about it's not about madmax but all 4 of the first movies started with him. In the first madmax didn't instantly show him, but he was the only one that could stop the nightrider.. the film properly is centered around him. Rest in peace , and I hope they will eventually find a way to revisit it in a tv series or video game.
I think it's the age of media we are in, streaming has changed things (whether you think for the good or the bad). I use to be SO excited for upcoming movies & was always a highlight of my summers. But now I rarely get excited
Corey here - I just went to see Furiosa this afternoon. Sean, you make several good points. In fact your #10 point about release windows being smaller affected my family going to IF when it was released. We were about to walk out the door, my wife and 2 kids, to go see it when I looked online and it appeared as though it had a same-day home rental for $25. The reality was that it was just an advertisement for preorder digital purchases. If it were just $25 rathen than the $60 it would have cost just for the tickets, I am doing that. Back to Furiosa. I think one other reason that you did not touch on, is the run-time. 2.5 hours is a long time to watch a movie without the ability to pause. Attention spans are getting shorter and shorter with every year that goes by.
Its difficult to say why there are so many movies failing this year. The obvious one's everybody says are: ticket prices, availability of streaming at home, poor marketing campaign, uninterest in strong female characters, fading interest in legacy sequels, lack of interest/awareness from younger audiences of characters/films from older movies from the 80's So I could say these but I would just be repeating what other people said
I do agree with some of the list mentioned but there's time comes a Super rare movie only MEANT for seeing in the cinemas like Avatar movies, Top Gun Maverick etc. Furiosa is also one of them and I feel bad Furiosa is gonna miss by many.
It is not like people are not interested in strong female characters... people are not interested to watch dudes with boobs. Believable strong female character doesn't bare-fist her way through hordes of men. People are tired of this, it is boring.
Went to experience this in Dolby theater yesterday, the seats were shaking from the motor & explosions, and the pic quality was next level. All of my friends were happy to exp this in Dolby because we doubt we'll see another movie like this for a long time or ever again
As many of you have pointed out Mad Max saga is more of a cult classic trilogy than anything else! Fury Road was a “hit” because it is a masterpiece and won many awards! In Furiosa’s case, even though is a fantastic, amazing film, movies are simply not big hits in theaters anymore, franchises are going down the drain and those of us who went and saw it are just hardcore Mad Max fans. The regular moviegoers will wait to watch it at home in a few weeks
15:40 yep. When me, my mom, and my brother went to go see dune part 2 just for 3 of us it was almost 100 dollars because we brought popcorn and drinks along with hotdogs
Not really an additional reason but like a summation. I heard that before covid the theory was that the average person will see an average of 12 movies in theaters a year or something like that. Even if that number was 6 before, I bet it isn't 6 now because of all those reasons. It might be like 3 or 4.
Something to note; Theatres only take 40% revenue after a couple weeks. During the opening weekend and first couple weeks, the films market back most of the box office. This is why bigger cinemas can afford to premiere new releases while smaller cinemas usually don’t screen up to a month after the A leagues.
It's a shame, I don't mean to suggest that a bad movie can't kill the box office but it feels nowadays that if it movie doesn't have the hype before it comes out it has no chance of making any money no matter the quality
While I agree with a lot of your reasons there's another that the comments mentioned: Mad Max isn't as popular as some other franchises. For example, my family didn't watch Mad Max: Fury Road when it was in theaters because we weren't interested at the time. Watched it last week because we had some interest in the new movie, Fury Road was well made but it didn't really click with us like other franchises do. We still went to see the new movie but mainly to watch the action scenes since they're supposed to be really good. We liked the movie and Furiosa as a character but won't be rewatching it in theaters. Probably a lot of other people who are in similar boats where Mad Max simply isn't their thing & combine that with the stuff you talked about, they probably just don't think it's worth the money to see this in theaters. The marketing though was pretty bad, like you said Anya Taylor-Joy doesn't show up until like halfway into the movie but the trailers focused almost exclusively on Adult Furiosa. Word of mouth might help but if it ends up on digital in a few weeks then it'll be pointless. Still shocked that The Fall Guy is already available to buy digitally, it hasn't even finished its theatrical run yet in some states.
I saw this with my friends over the weekend and I was surprised the theater was empty. I had a good time with it though. A little too long I would say.
I think people are becoming very piticular on what they wanna see. Movies like Scream 7, Deadpool and Wolverine, Joker 2, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice and Sonic 3 I think will be the next big hits at the box office. Wonka, Oppenheimer, Dune 2, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes have already made Bank. So there's that.
Kingdom is ~100 mil loss rn after 3 weeks. It has made 300 so far on 160 budget (so 400 break even with 2.5). It will probably make some money but not that much
It’s not acceptable how audiences are not as inclined to go to cinemas anymore and would rather watch films on streaming. We must start a campaign to get them off their arses, out of their houses, and into the cinemas! Who’s with me?
@@Daniel_2626 I guess. How about a policy on all streaming services that says for every 3 new releases you watch on streaming, you’ve got to watch at least 1 new release at the cinema to support the box office in order to keep your subscription plan. Or perhaps those who watch a certain number of new releases at the cinema get exclusive rewards on their streaming service. How does that sound?
@@chazzerouswhy does anyone need concessions though? Always has been an overpriced waste of money I have never engaged with. It’s not required for enjoyment and so many people seem to list it as a reason why they don’t go to the movies like it is an absolute.
One thing that I would also add is the recent trend of an increased runtime. If someone sees that Furiosa is 149 minutes, they’re less likely to go and see the film in theatres because it ends up taking about 4-5 hours out of your day from driving there and back, waiting through adds, getting food, etc. Even I was turned off by the length, I still saw it, but I really did feel the length of the film and that is absolutely discouraging to the general movie goer. Movies need to be shorter nowadays. Ghostbusters Frozen Empire did not need to be 2 hours long. The Fall Guy did not need to be 2 hours long. Even Abigail was nearly 2 hours long, and that’s a b movie that takes place in one location with a very limited cast of characters.
only after the pandemic. 2019 was actually the single year with the most 1 bio + cinematic releases. though adjusted for inflation and in terms of tickets sold it's been in decline since beginning of the 2000's, but just going by total gross revenue the 2010's was a great time for the box office.
Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron made Fury Road excellent. They could even have made a Furiosa spinoff, but with the original actress who made the character memorable, in a sequel and not in a prequel with another actress. But they should have done it years ago.
yeah I think Anya Taylor Joy actually still has to prove that she's a mainstream box office star. Not sure, if I'm forgetting something, but I believe there hasn't been one movie with her in the lead that made bank. She is a hugely talented actress for sure, but I doubt the true mainstream stardom is there.
@@derg6222 I'm not sure if she was one of the leads, as I haven't seen the movie. From what I've gathered, the only film with her that grossed over a billion dollars was Super Mario Bros. Next up is Dune: Part 2, followed by the Split franchise. Her biggest success as a lead was in The Queen's Gambit, which is a series. I don't think she's the issue. The decision to go back, instead of building on the relative success of Fury Road, seems to have been a risky bet that didn't pay off.
@@Plexy__music The Super Mario Bros film is fully animated and she only does voice acting, so I wouldn't count that, as her face didn't matter to the marketing - I should have specified to live action only. And in Dune 2 she is literally in the movie for like 30 seconds and wasn't in the trailers or any of the marketing at all, with the exception of attending the premiere. Her biggest box office sucess apart from that is actually Split, where clearly McAvoy drew people in, as she was basically unknown back then and more of a surprise second lead. Yeah Queens Gambit was a big sucess, but on Netflix even shows and movies without any famous actors can turn into global hits, eg. "Squid Game", "Baby Reindeer" or "Money Heist" etc, so that doesn't really make an argument either. Imho she still needs to prove that she's got that mainstream draw in her, cause the numbers aren't there to show she does.
@@derg6222 I don't disagree. But this prequel would flop with any new actress. This was a bad idea. Thor was on the posters, even he didn't save this movie. I think it was a bad idea, regardless of the quality of the movie and the actors
Almost as if nobody cared about story of side-character in franchise about a specific person called Max. It is like making an Indiana Jones movie about "that guy with sword that who shot" or "Star Trek: The Story Of Red Shirt - that actually did not died for once" ;-)
Great video Sean. One thing I would add (although not as strong as your takes) is people in recent years evidently wait to hear of films are good before going to see, because of the ticket prices. KOTPOTA has had solid numbers but more importantly good legs, and I feel like that along with other films people may have spent their ‘film ticket’ money on Apes. People forget Furiosa was supposed to release same day as Apes and Apes got pushed forward. Maybe box office would’ve benefit if it were the other way around? Fine margins…
The issue with the box office is the theatrical window. If studios would keep movies in theatres longer, let them go through the old process of the discount locations after, allow physical media to come out, and THEN put things on streaming, the box office would be fine. People don’t like to wait. If it took a few months before it got to them, they would come more often. But they know that movies will come to streaming in a matter of 3-6 weeks. The urgency isn’t there. The fear of being left out. The studios having their own streaming services and interests in not being shut out in the streaming wars have made them too quick to put things on streaming. I don’t even think the studios WANT to put them on streaming so quickly, but feel like they have to in order to keep pace. Peacock and Paramount Plus are already struggling to keep pace. How can they not get things to hemorrhaging services quickly? Streaming channels should be third party. It was better when they kept things in theatres longer and then sent them off to Netflix and Hulu. We didn’t know how good we had it.
I haven't time to theater since last summer. Not sure why to be honest. As a teenager I went to the theater at least once a week. As a kid I remember waiting a year for movies to come VHS. 17 days is crazy
Another reason is that the movie is rated R, R movies usually don’t do well (most theaters reinforce un permitting underage people). Movies that appeal to all demographic usually do better
@@austin_smith2149 Not denying a lot are successful, but the vast majority (not completely flop) but do struggle in comparison to their pg13 pg and g counterparts. This is empirically demonstrated.
Tbh not only am I not entirely sure if people really talk that much about Fury Road now, but even when they do how often is it about the story and characters specifically? If anything it’s amazing Furiosa topped the box office opening weekend at all. This is like Birds of Prey or Snyder cut where WB greenlit stuff if there was any buzz surrounding it whatsoever. Neither of those worked out super well, so why would this be any different?
thank you for a comprehensive and fair dissertation on the Hollywood Blockbuster box office condition. I was concerned that you might go into a biased politically fueled rant about unrelated issues ( the closest you came was addressing the "girl boss" issue, but you handled it very diplomatically and didn't make it an issue of itself) like a certain other youtube nerdy movie critic. As for your reasons, I found ALL of them relevant to the state of the movie industry today. Especially the ones dealing with finance and sequelitis. Simply put, I feel that most Hollywood movies -especially the blockbuster wannabes- simply cost too much. I routinely attend a local movie theater ( I have a membership that allows me to watch as many as I can fit in my schedule for a moderate monthly sum- last month I saw 20+ movies for less than $15 ticket price) and I enjoy the "small" budget $25m films- quality is barely determined by cost, the craftsmanship means so much more. And as you mentioned, concessions are horribly over-priced- to be fair, concessions are over-priced everywhere that the venue has control of the combustibles. And when a film has to pull in $500m+ to make a profit, that is insane, and an impossibly self defeating business model. Give me a solid A24 moderately budgeted, well marketed film that is not afraid to do something different over a modern blockbuster any day. Just to show my viewing habit, I am looking forward to this weekends slate of movies and the ones I am most excited to see are Kinds of Kindness, Daddio and Janet Planet, although I will be seeing several more as well.
I absolutely loved Furiosa and is my second favorite in the franchise behind fury road, but I understand your points you’ve brought up. I’m curious if Fury Road and Furiosa weren’t given the mad max name would they have done better
Another thing to consider is that Chris Hemsworth isn't a box-office draw. Outside of the MCU all of his big films - Men in Black, Huntsman Winter's War, Heart of the Sea, Blackhat - have done poorly.
It’s only 2. 1. Most people loved fury road. But mostly Mad Max. But they did a movie about a character nobody really cared about. She was a great character but not enough for a movie. 2. People are tired of female lead action movies.
I think we’re at the point where going to a movie theater isn’t usually this great experience but a chore that ppl deal with to see something new and now ppl know they can just wait like u said a month or and itl be on streaming where they already pay for that service
I finally watched it. I found it hard to bond with Furiosa herself, since she spends most of the movie in silent brooding. I also see why the general audience stayed away. There were a lot of brutal moments that would exceed a lot of viewers tolerance level (ugh maggots).
I liked the movie. Mad Max has just never been a huge box office series. It’s always had a cult following at best. Also, Max isn’t in the movie even thought it’s till called Mad Max. I was hoping that he would at least show up once and he never does which is really weird. Like not even a cameo lol.
Me and my girlfriend went to Fall Guy a couple weeks ago, costed me nearly $50 for 2 people and a tub of popcorn with drinks. I'm not going to a movie unless its a special occasion anymore.
another important take outside of just film. this was one of highest years in travel over memorial day weekend of all time. i have an odd feeling it had a very big effect on first week draw. also just not a family friendly movie over a major holiday
The movie was delayed several times do to lawsuits, dropping dollar value and catastrophic weather so I’m sure the decade delay wasn’t a marketing strategy.
We need more movies with lower budgets to push creativity. Studios should make less superhero stuff or whatever and put the budgets from those into like 10-15 mid-low budget stuff
This one I might’ve gone to the theaters for. But I haven’t gone to a movie theater since I saw the flash. I can see most movies at home pretty quickly and nothing has really been worth going to the movies for. Since my kids have become teenagers, it would actually be less expensive to go to the movies because they’re not going with us. But even they’re not going to the movies. Yes it’s expensive to go, but I don’t think that’s the reason. We have like five different streaming services so all of these movies are going to be at home on at home at some point. I don’t know if it’s ever gonna go back to the way it was unless each movie becomes such a spectacular experience in the theaters that that’s the only way to really do it.
It seems like only “big event” movies have been doing well since the pandemic. Movies like the last few Spider-Man movies, The Dune movies, Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: Way of the Water, the Little Mermaid, Barbie,Oppenheimer and the Color Purple remake. ❤❤❤❤
I saw Furiosa yesterday. I couldnt convince anybody to see it with me. None of my friends. Not my girlfriend. No one. And I was the only one in the theater…
Just no one is interested…

Sorry bro.
Furiosa it's a great movie man.
That's brutal. So you have the whole cinema to yourself. A private screening.
A private screening for $12. Not bad.
Lmao damn
Cause it's woke garbage. No one wants to fund this garbage propaganda.
1. People don’t go to theaters anymore unless they think the film is worth it(No Way Home, Spider Verse, Barbenheimer, Top Gun). Tickets are expensive now. It’s much cheaper to wait for streaming than go to a theater
2. It’s a prequel to a character who is not that popular
3. Mad Max itself has always been a niche franchise
Those are off the top of my head
THIS 👆🏻
It's just that simple, the mainstream audience don't give a f*ck about the character EVEN if the movie it's greath.
"People don’t go to theaters anymore unless they think the film is worth it"
this is a really big oversimplification. There are plenty of successes that arent the big tentpoles. Obviously in this case, the biggest movies tend to be the biggest. Theres a big gap from No way home to other box office hits.
Audiences are just really picky and fury road wasnt even a big success at the box office in 2015.
@@nms7872stop being nice to general audiences. We need to tell them that blood is on there hands.
#1 is a bigger issue than studios realize. Especially given the movies show up for rent in three weeks, you REALLY have to want to go to the theater to see it.

Move Theatres plus the pop corn / drink is way too expensive now.......instead of budget options, they'd rather have empty theatres

agreed, a lot of people still have never seen the orginal movies, compared to the 80s movies like indiana jones, beverly hills cop, Top gun , back to the future which almost everyone has seen many times.
160 million budget on Fury road and it made 360 million that’s good not excellent but enough to warrant a sequel BUT they went with a prequel
Mad Max is a niche franchise. Nobody outside of us film geeks are into these movies. In fact the only one I hear general audiences talk about is Thunderdome and that's more likely because Tina Turner's in it.
The best was the second the most renown I agree was ThunderDome. It was exactly like you say a niche franchise.
We remember Thunderdome because it’s just a kickass name 😂
I 100% agree, plus add in the fact that he decided to tell a story about furiosa which I don’t think anyone cares about this character and it showed at the box office.
The theme tune to Beyond Thunderdome is wonderful. Great 80s song.
The Road Warrior is a masterpiece and funny as hell. Dog torturing the guy throughout had me in stitches. 😂
Nah dude he wants box office numbers bruh ain’t no way he’d make 2 fuckin Happy Feet movies if he didn’t
Godzilla Minus One was made on a $15m budget. Hollywood studios are overspending, period.
@@AyaReikoTripleEliteThat movie was incredible👍
I remember when many movies were B movies with a 50 million dollar budget and some great writing. Those days are long gone. Even the direct-to-DVD from the 80s and 90s had better writing than we see today.
As a rule of thumb, nowadays even a low budget Horror Film needs to gross more than 100 millions to be succesfull, if released by one of the big studios, cause wide relase marketing will never be less than 50 millions globally and the theatres obviously take their share. The Horror genre has actually been doing pretty bad so far this year, it's been only flops. Even the usually so reliant Blumhouse has tanked in 2024 with "Night Swim" and "Imaginary" both flopping.
everyone talks about burnout on franchises but original films are ALL flopping whereas at least SOME franchise films make bank, it sucks
I guess there's a burnout on movies altogether, for many reasons.
Maybe because the movies last year weren't exactly amazing
Maybe people are fed up of movies trying to be smarter/dumber than the movie is supposed to be
People are fed up of "forced diversity" for the sake of diversity rather than making interesting characters
Some people just have the mindset of "what's the point, it'll be on streaming in a few months so we can save money and not hear people scream every time there's a nostalgia trip"

I don't like going to the movies anymore because there are always teenagers or other demographics on their phones and talking through the entire movie. When I was a teenager the theater would kick you out for talking.
This is true
very much a society thing, people feel so entitled now, I'm only 34 & it's mostly teenagers/young adults now but also society as a whole
I think this may be a thing in the city/state ur in. I live in dallas and I go alamo to watch movies. People are very respectful
quite right other demographics quite right, like that mate
With all the flops I think this is why so many studios are putting old movies back in theatres like look at all the re released films this year. The spider-Man movies Star Wars the Phantom Menace the lord of the rings trilogy shrek Alien The mummy Ghostbusters. And many more.
And in general they are getting really small box office. Looks like good money given how bad the original movies are doing, but it isn't something that can sustain movie theaters.
those re relases are coin change to the studios. might be good for the theatres though to actually have some heavily visited screenings once in a while.
It might have came out 5 years too late, but it is still much better than most of the garbage we got in the last 5 years.
Totally agree. If it's still good fans will come out to watch it. Fury road came out 40 years after the last mad Max and still made $400 million. But this new movie didn't get much marketing.
Fr the film is great
It was good but not great and certainly not better than “anything in the last five years”. This was basically just “Fury Road” lite. It was way too long.
But in a world where we never have a mad max wasteland I’m happy it was made (though I’d rather have seen miller just do a max mad series instead and just kept Fury Road as its own little world. It was just so much better as a stand alone).
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was better than this.
If Mad Max was the main character of the movie, I would have gone to see it.
its a shame it did not do well opening weekend. its a great movie !!
action scenes where totally awesome !
too much chatter before movie came out on CGi use and yes it should have came out 5 years ago.
Millers delay was something about having to go to court or something like that which put a delay on it.
And a Mad Max movie with no Max does not make much sense.
Now it bombs and then years later people will be like "Why don't they make movies like this anymore? Hollywood sux blah bla".
Nah Furiosa was trash. Too much CGI and story was underwhelming.

Sucks for them. Those of us who saw it in the theater on the opening weekend without having to fight crowds won big. It was really fun and was great to see on the big screen
Honestly I just think people are losing interest in movies overall unless it’s something that’s trendy or something that everyone is talking about. Movies have so much competition these days in the entertainment landscape (TV, Streaming, Video Games (video games are massive imo especially for younger Gen z audiences).
yeah it's true. the constant shifts in free time culture and the overall media landscape are the most important reasons for the box office crisis.
Exactly! Knowing it was see it now or wait months got you out the door. I miss those days too.
yup, change is the media landscape and shift in the freetime culture are the biggest factors for the box office crisis.
Umm, because no one actually asked for another Mad Max sequel?
You're in luck because Furiosa is a prequel 😁
We actually did. You were just out to lunch at the time.
That is too simple. We must reject it.

I haven't seen Furiosa but I'm really surprised with The Fall Guy's box office performance, that's a movie with something for everyone pretty much.
sub optimal marketing and I doubt that Emily Blunt is a mainstream star with a broad box office appeal. still the movie flopped hard. but as Sean correctly points out, 2024 was all flops at the box office, with Dune 2 and Godzilla x Kong being the only decent enough successes.
I was really hoping this would perform well. I don't want anything stopping Dr. Miller from getting behind that camera 😭
The main issue? Absolutely not. They definitely contribute though
Needs Mad Max for a Mad Max movie
It is already a flop because of the low opening number and the predictions of his final worldwide box Office.
It may not even be in theaters in two weeks. It cost $300 million dollars to make including marketing.
Blade Runner 2049 bombed but it's in my top 5 movies over the last couple decades
I thinks it’s the marketing
I didn’t hear about the movie until 2 weeks ago
same. also it looked more like a series or a stright-to-dvd type of movie. im tellin ya, its the marketing
I'm surprised you ended up watching this video, if you didn't know of the movies' existence a couple of weeks ago
The obvious one's everybody says are:
ticket prices,
availability of streaming at home,
poor marketing campaign,
uninterest in strong female characters,
fading interest in legacy sequels,
lack of interest/awareness from younger audiences of characters/films from older movies from the 80's
So I could say these but I would just be repeating what other people said
I do agree with some of the list mentioned but there's time comes a Super rare movie only MEANT for seeing in the cinemas like Avatar movies, Top Gun Maverick etc. Furiosa is also one of them and I feel bad Furiosa is gonna miss by many.
It is not like people are not interested in strong female characters... people are not interested to watch dudes with boobs. Believable strong female character doesn't bare-fist her way through hordes of men. People are tired of this, it is boring.
no 1 reason is shift in free time culture.
Something to note;
Theatres only take 40% revenue after a couple weeks.
I think it's a mix of theatre prices increasing and having a few movies that performed very well at the box office a couple months prior
I saw this with my friends over the weekend and I was surprised the theater was empty. I had a good time with it though. A little too long I would say.
4:03 My friend who is a general audience said that he does not like any Mad Max movies because it is too weird and too mad.
Mad? Hmm. Like that Max guy?
@@JaceDeanLove Yeah, something like that.
I got an advertisement for Furiosa before this video, what a coincidence. 👀
Wow that was fast though this video would take a few more days
Edit: It was pulled from a livestream
I liked the bit at the end where the old lady asks for her name, and she says, "Furiosa, Furiosa Rockatansky"
Godzilla x Kong too
That one too
Kingdom hasn't done that well. Tracking behind the third movie which didn't do that well given its budget.
If only we could mate, if only. Only way it would work is if world governments decided to shut down all streaming services effective immediately😂
Maybe if concessions didn’t cost an arm and a leg and they didn’t have 30 minutes of commercials and trailers, more people would go to the cinemas
@@chazzerouswhy does anyone need concessions though? Always has been an overpriced waste of money I have never engaged with. It’s not required for enjoyment and so many people seem to list it as a reason why they don’t go to the movies like it is an absolute.
@@chazzerous Yeah. The food and drink at my cinema is reasonably priced I feel though.
Very true. Good call.
I think the general standard for the amount of money films can expect to make in theaters has gone down significantly over the past few years
only after the pandemic. 2019 was actually the single year with the most 1 bio + cinematic releases. though adjusted for inflation and in terms of tickets sold it's been in decline since beginning of the 2000's, but just going by total gross revenue the 2010's was a great time for the box office.
@@derg6222 Yeah thats true
Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron made Fury Road excellent.
They could even have made a Furiosa spinoff, but with the original actress who made the character memorable, in a sequel and not in a prequel with another actress. But they should have done it years ago.
Exactly.
yeah I think Anya Taylor Joy actually still has to prove that she's a mainstream box office star.
What a great analysis of the movie market ! It’s pretty rare to see videos of smart people with analytic brain instead of blind emotions! Respect ! ❤
Almost as if nobody cared about story of side-character in franchise about a specific person called Max. It is like making an Indiana Jones movie about "that guy with sword that who shot" or "Star Trek: The Story Of Red Shirt - that actually did not died for once" ;-)
Yes making a prequel about the other main character in a movie is the equivelant to an extra. 🤦♂️
Movies that appeal to all demographic usually do better
a Pg-13 movie can bomb as hard as an R rated movie. The Mad Max IP just isnt big at the box office
@@nms7872 agreed, but R movies usually do struggle more than pg13 movies
@@duduu8130 False. Deadpool, Joker, Oppenheimer, John Wick, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Just to name a few.
@@austin_smith2149 Not denying a lot are successful, but the vast majority (not completely flop) but do struggle in comparison to their pg13 pg and g counterparts. This is empirically demonstrated.
@@duduu8130No stop with r rated excuse
People just aren’t going to theaters anymore. The only movie I plan on going to see is Deadpool
Fury road was an amazing film and it still underperformed, so this isn’t shocking
thank you for a comprehensive and fair dissertation on the Hollywood Blockbuster box office condition.
Nobody is a proven box office draw these days.
It’s only 2.
1. Most people loved fury road. But mostly Mad Max. But they did a movie about a character nobody really cared about. She was a great character but not enough for a movie.
2. People are tired of female lead action movies.
I thought Tom Hardy as Mad Max was almost a non existent character in Fury Road. Furiosa was a far more interesting character IMO
Barbie and the last predator movie disprove your last statement.
@@iraford5788is barbie an action film?
Not enough? Weird because she has more detail to her life then Max in any of the films lol
I think we’re at the point where going to a movie theater isn’t usually this great experience but a chore that ppl deal with to see something new and now ppl know they can just wait like u said a month or and itl be on streaming where they already pay for that service
Good points. I see lots of comparisons between this film and the sequel to Sin City.
Furiosa barely beat The Garfield Movie even though Garfield had way more ticket sales when the IMAX showtimes were so empty for Furiosa this weekend!
The fact that this made lesser money than Madame Web makes me lose my faith in humanity.
I’ve been looking forward to this movie for months. I had no idea it was opening this weekend.
We need more movies with lower budgets to push creativity. Studios should make less superhero stuff or whatever and put the budgets from those into like 10-15 mid-low budget stuff
When you said "pour fuel into the engine" I was fully expecting a clip from fury road where they blow gas out of their mouth directly into the engine.
