    My goodness; I can't believe what you score from the shops. That is a very clean copy of Lust For Life. Agree, David Bowie albums indeed. Feel better, Alan.

      Thanks, Mark. I don't find things as often as I used to, and often come home empty-handed, so it's nice to score something a bit special every now and then. Cheers.

    Happy Mondays, technically when you listen to those inane shiny trousers noise generators no day is going to be Happy, is it!! Scorpions, 50p for one of their vinyls is 51p more than they are worth. At least you got Lust for Life, I have that, although in my teenage crates..

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Haha! Yes, I think paracetamol and aspirin are not really strong enough to get a happy buzz from The Mondays. I'm too middle-aged to try something stronger... I had not listened to Lust For Life for many years. The loudness and production took me aback. More enjoyable than I was anticipating.

      Thanks, Lis. Yes, hopefully, the lurgy will not materialise fully... The Eddie Henderson was a very nice find and, in some ways, the pick of the bunch. I wasn't going to show most of these, but they are not easy to come by in original pressings, and there's always something exciting about finding them in charity shops. And it's getting much, much harder to do so nowadays.

    Alan, thanks for making this video, you are a real ''trooper''. You could have just called in sick. I'm the head of the VC Human Resource department, I would have excused your absence. The Happy Mondays cover is a ''rip- off'' of the collage work of Mimmo Rotella, who used torn advertisements in his early work, and is one of the big influences on Street Art. The music reminded me of The Stone Roses, '' Kinky Afro'' was a classic like, '' I Wanna Be Adored'' I never really listened to The Ramones, to me, they sound like The Beach Boys on steroids. ''Trumpet poop on the ground, with peanuts''- Captain Beefheart

    • @statictraveller

      I didn't know you were head of VCHR. I will bear it in mind if I need to fake a sickie in the future. The boys liked the rip off/torn joke there. Had them in 'tears' of laughter.
      One day, you are going to have to compile a book of Beefheart quotes for use at parties. His phrases are regularly and rightly, the mot juste.

    Hi Alan
    Glad you've found another honey hole for vinyl.
    I played that Dick Gaughan album the other week and then watched a video on TH-cam where he's a speaker at a Labour party office ( I think early 90s)..interesting guy and spoke really well..but agree, his music style isn't anything original.
    I used to have Lovedrive, always liked the opener ' Loving You Sunday Morning'.
    Hope you feel better soon.
    All the best.
    Rob.

      @statictraveller  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Rob.
      Not being very original is a funny thing thing to write on your own album. He probably meant he was more traditional...
      Sometimes, a bit of heavy rock clears the cobwebs and the dust from the mind. A dose of air guitar and a leap about and you're ready for anything. Though these days, it's more likely to be a good sit down with a cup of tea and a biscuit to recover...

    I quite like the typography of that McCullogh cover, though Mac looks unusually boyish. You showing The Idiot made me listen to it again. Very strong songs I think and the ultimate alienation / depression tune Mass Production out-Lows Bowie’s Low.

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the McCulloch cover seems to look OK on camera, but when one considers all the artwork that could have been used for an album titled 'Mysterio'....
      I was going to mention that I think Bowie's tunes on Iggy's albums are probably stronger than his self released material from the period. It would be fascinating to know his process and decision-making at the time. I wonder what the songs would have sounded like with his lyrics and vocals instead?

    Alan, Great finds - you must be living 24/7 in the charity shop back room cupboard so getting all the first dibs. I don't bother going in charity shops now. Ramones - teenage music, great comment. My mate sent me a superb 70's promo picture of The Scorpions all topless and in shorts, it really made me cry with laughter. Have to admit I like the cover of Mysterioso (though I probably won't like the music - was never a Bunnymen fan). I have Handful of Earth - decent album but not a classic - preferred him in Five Hand Reel. For me The Scorpions only did one decent album - their first Lonesome Crow.

    Good to see finding some records. You don't often see Iggy Pop records about. I like the brief EP he did with Underworld. I See Big is quite touching and worth a listen. Hope you feel better soon. I'm having a bit of an electronica and trance phase. I saw Orbital with my son last summer. The last time I saw them live was 1995! I think I'm having a midlife crisis. It is ace. Take care, Steve.

      Do you know, I don't think I had ever heard that Iggy Underworld EP? Even though I listened to Underworld a fair bit in the 90s. I was playing a few trance 12"s the other day: nothing quite hits the spot in the same way.

    Thanks to the weeklies I got into the Mondays quite early. Rushed out on a Monday to get ‘Pills Thrills’ and was a bit crestfallen. Compared to stuff like ‘Voodoo Ray’ or even 808 State & whatever house stuff was kicking around at the time it sounded a bit clapped out. That was an unhappy Monday. The Idiot is probably more influential than people give it credit for. May have invented goth & Nine Inch Nails. Those are both bad things. But I like The Idiot. Get the Lemsips & Lucozade (seventies version) in Alan!

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hmm, yes I can see how Pills wouldn't have compared with House music- a completely different and more languid animal altogether.
      If I went to university as a mature student anytime in the near future, I would write a thesis on how Goth music truly started with the theme from The Addams Family and how it was all downhill from there.
      Ah, the seventies Lucozade. I have a very clear memory of being very ill in bed as a young boy with mumps or measles or something and my mum bringing in that cellophane wrapped wonder. A whole bottle for little old me which I drank on and off through bouts of fitful sleep and delirium. You knew things were serious if you got bought a bottle of Lucozade back then. It was the one and only time my mum ever bought me one. Most of the time you were sent to school to be sick into your desk and told to shut the lid so nobody would notice.

    Ah just what the vinyl doctors ordered in my book I've got a cold too so enough of these tags I want Alan laying into and 'deconstructing' well loved and established acts. I've never owned any of them I don't think. Fusion is a bit wanky (note: not wankers passé) just proggy jazz and not for me. The Ramones never do it for me either surely one album by them is enough. Believe it or not I had the McCulloch one on LP but I must've Mc(CULL)ed it haha. Record shop days we got chucked loadsa freebies there was a Cohen cover on there no? From a Cohen covers album I reckon.
    Happy Mondays I've still all my 12"s never had the album so rather jealous of that. I've got the Black Grape album though that's a corker and I drank a huge amount of beer once whilst at a gig seeing them amazing I didn't fall from the upper circle really. Scorpions mmmmm well nice bit of euro rawk is ok. What's the best cold remedy then? Must be whisky up there or fisherman's friends.

    • @statictraveller
      @statictraveller  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hmmm. Perhaps a classic album deconstructing vinyl tag could work? I'm up for it. 'You only need one album by this artist' vinyl tag? I'm down with that. 'I once owned an album by this artist, but culled it' vinyl tag. I'm all over it. 'I once owned an album with a cover of a Leonard Cohen song on it' vinyl tag. My excitement level is through the metaphorical roof right now.
      I have yet to try it, but apparently a surefire remedy for a cold up north is go to bed beneath a tartan duvet after drinking 2 bottles of whisky and having stuck a deep fried haggis up each nostril to stem snot flow. Perhaps you could give it a go and report back on its efficacy? I look forward to your detailed report.
