GPA in high school really isn’t about how smart you are it’s sorta like how much effort you put in to your education
while that is true for the american education system, it's not true for the british education system. If we take 2 students who have the same subjects, the one with the higher GPA will most likely be smarter. (Given that they did not opt for predicted grades due to COVID)
@@mubashshirifrad1728 there is so much room for stastical error there, lad. Life outside of school has a massive effect on GPA. Depression and tragedy are not to be fucked with and they can lower your GPA for a few months, even years. GPA absolutely shows who is working the hardest rather than who is the most 'intelligent'. Which isn't necessarily terrible in an academic setting (although it's not healthy for young minds).
Also, our understanding of how learning and intelligence works is shite, so no one can actually say what you've said for definite.
totally right although not always the case because some students may not put that much effort into their school work but still end up at the top. Probably because they have better at retaining what they have learned or because they can comprehend what is being taught faster (esp at the elementary level) although that may not always mean they are smarter than the others
Also once you get into upper years don’t you have a choice in the classes you think? Like someone taking science and math heavy AP classes would have a tougher curriculum versus someone taking social science and humanities courses - which are easier in my opinion.

I don’t think we talk enough about how tremendously quarantine has effected students today. It seems to be such a recurring theme of people losing their motivation and dealing with so much burn out.

Yes! My grades unfortunately went down last year but I got it back up to straight As with AP classes this year and hopefully colleges understand that last year was a struggle 🥲

Or the exact opposite depending on the student. The top ranked student here stated she was much more focused at home. Different kids had different reactions to school from home.

Getting your high school diploma is a backup plan. You don't even need great grades, you just need to graduate. STAY IN SCHOOL.

I would love to see a 5 or 10 year follow up with the same people and see where they are in life. As a high schooler, I always wanted to learn business (like Daniela) but parents pressured me to learn things like AP Latin. 😕

@@TheLovesnowangel I’m a cusper/ “zillennial” (1997) with stronger ties to millennials due to being the youngest sibling to three true millennials, and I continue to be really impressed by the 2000-2009 born teens. Great attitudes, bright minds, great style (thanks TH-cam/TikTok/Euphoria), etc. This was a really wholesome and refreshing video.
@@sylviaswayne you can’t use these videos to shape your opinion on Gen Z’s. Literally half my high school smokes pot and parties. It’s refreshing to see polite respectful kids but its not even close to reality. It’s sad because all these kids doing drugs and disobeying adults are just trying to look “cool” and fit in with others, surprisingly tho, I haven’t seen bullying in a long ass time.

I think it’s because they all understood that GPA does not mean the same for everyone. They were right, GPA is a very specific measure of knowledge. Does this mean they all will be successful in life? Absolutely not. In my eyes the one that has an up on all of them is the young woman with the business. At 18? That is amazing!

It was sooo refreshing to see people being understanding. These past two years, I've burnt out terribly and I've struggled my physical/mental health after having a perfect GPA in school for years. It's just nice to know that I'm not alone. :)

when you’re that young, you typically just don’t have the life experience to draw from so your views and thoughts can appear simpler (life is pretty simple for the average 17 yo, jelllly). But they did an excellent job explaining their thoughts and listened fully to everyone around them to get the order everyone was satisfied with. Pretty heartening stuff to see.

I knew people in high school with over a 5.1 GPA and it still boggles me today how it is even possible. It made me think mine (while perfectly fine) was horrible. Looking back on it now, it was incredibly damaging to my self-worth! I'm really glad to see these kids understand that GPA doesn't define your work ethic.

I was one of the careless kids in school and still got a 3.5 now that I look back I regret not getting involved in clubs and such not that gpa really matters in the real world but getting involved in stuff and taking initiative at a young age definitely helps when you get older trust me
I got 3.67. I don't regret anything. Being who i am is what i wanted and i will live with it.
The idea that people can get a 5.0 is just bonkers to me. At my school, you could only start taking AP classes Junior year and Sophomore year if you had special recommendations. So, the max you could typically get until Junior year was a 4.0. It was nearly impossible to get a cumulative GPA higher than a 4.5 and 5.0 was completely impossible.
luckily when colleges look at your GPA they standardize it to make it fair depending on what classes are available in different schools.
You think a 5.0 GPA in high school is crazy? My brother is graduating high school next year with an associate’s degree! I think that’s crazier.

@@michelleharrison6349 Hey Michelle not to lessen your brothers amazing feat but a lot of jobs sadly don't take associate degrees seriously. A lot of the time people would just pass over your resume as they take getting one as being lazy. Something I don't really believe in at all. You don't need a bachelor's & etc degree to be successful.

Joon would have been in higher ranks based on peer expectations, but he thought low of himself(rightfully so unfortunatly) but it was him that made that change.
The lowest gpa girl has different goals to say she is dum is not true.
The Joon kid has major self esteem issues and probably has a very dim view of life(which I can totally understand, he does not have many attractive traits of value) and jubilee is just preying on him or maybe he is straight up lying that he is not smart.

They were all so extremely cute in everything but I loved David especially. He seemed kinda confident and let himself get pushed upwards but also didn't say much at all and just spread his wholesomeness. It seems like he's emotionally and socially very intelligent.

@@rumerstain12 a lot of times producers make them take off their shoes because they’re using an all white background which sometimes stretches on the floor for them to walk on. If they have their shoes on, you would see dirty shoe prints all over the set.

My valedictorian had a 4.96 GPA with a perfect sat and act score, most of the “athletic” group didn’t know who they were when they were announced

I knew some of the AP were going to have a lower GPA. Testing can negatively impact AP students as well. I had a higher GPA than some of my classmates without taking any AP classes. It happens.
*This* because I took 3 AP courses in HS and that didnt stop me from graduating with a 2.5 GPA
@@mlee-w664 Yeah, it’s probably really common. I actually dropped out of the AP ELA class that I had. Writing was always pretty stressful for me. If you are stressed out or going through a lot in your life, GPA will reflect that. Hopefully you are/were able to keep working towards your goals though.

@@marvynmahaaresh7896 it’s a Grade Point Average. Each class gets a grade from 0 - 5.0. And from all those classes we get a total average (GPA). It Does not include national/international standardized tests. We have one for high school and a separate one for college in USA.

I just want to say, as a person with usually top rang and high grades, the years spent in quarantine have really affected my grades and overall studies. I feel like a lot of people have faced this and I truly sympathize with them.

The GPA is a symbol of dedication, not necessary “smartness” level. I graduated last spring with a 4.0. While it sounds impressive to some, to me the GPA was all I felt validated by. I didn’t have any friends, I put everything into school. I definitely don’t consider myself massively intelligent, but I am motivated. And the people with the most motivation get the farthest in life. They can take negative experiences and make something beautiful out of it. Intelligence only goes so far without motivation.
Edit: after reading some of the comments, I’d maybe say motivation AND hard work. They go hand in hand.

@@vintagesparkles4289 honestly, I had struggled making friends with my social anxiety…and people weren’t always very welcoming to me so I felt kinda hopeless. Felt like I couldn’t be a part of anything special so I put everything I had into my school work. It’s all that I had to live for.

It's also a symbol of privilege. A lot of folks who have high GPAs aren't also working, making their own meals, doing their own laundry, and other responsibilities.
As a fellow 4.0+ GPA-haver, I totally endorse this message. I’ve always thought the same - that I put everything into school. And I absolutely agree with the other commenter that this has been granted by privilege. I did have a part time job but it wasn’t anything crazy. Being able to focus on school without any major life stressors helps a lot.
@@DA-js7xz yeah and less than ideal family dynamics also makes a difference. I totally get that.
Tragic things too…I lost my grandpa a month before my graduation (was very close with him) and missed a few days of school leading up to finals, so that was very stressful, along with writing a graduation speech. Still was able to pull through and finish strong despite the hardship.
How well someone does in school really just depends on a variety of factors. Everyone deals with things differently.
I got better grades being at home than I ever did in school, went from F’s and D’s to Honor roll. I could just turn down the volume on the teacher and actually think for once. Graduated with the best grades I’ve ever gotten
i felt what david said, i was a student that ofc cared about my grades but when i decided to not focus too much on class rank and gpa i actually shot all the way up from rank 26 to rank 4 with a 4.9 gpa. just have fun and take classes you WANT to take and not what'll boost ur gpa

I had a 4.0 GPA in high school, but in college my GPA was more like 2.7. People talk about effort a lot when it comes to grades, but honestly I think everyone has a limit. Some people can push themselves to their limits and still not get a 4.0 GPA, but it doesn't mean you've put in any less work. At the end of the day, tests are designed so that only a certain number of people get a certain grade. I believe as long as you've tried your best, you'll have nothing to regret.

It seems like a serious oversight to not have accounted for GPA calculation differences. 4.6 is only possible on a 5.0 scale...
yea they should’ve really done unweighted, different schools calculate weighted gpas differently. some schools it isn’t even possible to go over 4.5 even with weight from AP classes
@@amysnodgrass3631 There are benefits and drawbacks to using weighted vs unweighted GPA. On one hand, some schools don’t even offer AP classes so a weighted GPA over 4.0 is impossible. On the other hand, you can’t equate a 4.0 of someone who took 15 APs with someone who took 0. Also consider many people take dual enrollment or college classes that sometimes don’t even appear on the high school transcript. GPA really can only be compared between people from the same school.
@@user-gr6cy8nx3z Yeah 100%. Kids at my school take a ton of AP classes (and my school, in general, is insanely hard) but they don't weigh the GPAs, so we all look a lot worse than we actually are. Of course, colleges know this so it's fine, but in this environment, it would be complicated

@@amysnodgrass3631 This seems to be an unpopular opinion, but standardized testing (SAT, ACT, AP, etc.) is the only thing perfectly objective and comparable in college applications. Tests are not unequal in themselves, they just highlight inequality that might already exist. Colleges’ decisions to go test-optional and even test-blind is essentially an effort to tackle the result of the problem, not the problem itself.
Im from Wisconsin and my school didn't weight our GPA's from AP classes so actually most of the kids in the AP classes had worse GPAs than all the people who breezed by taking the regular classes.

I’m a senior in college right now. Graduated high school in 2018. I had a 4.6 GPA weighted (3.8 unweighted), top 10% of my class, and decent test scores (1270 on the SAT, 26 on the ACT. Not as high as I wanted at first). Involved in extracurricular activities and AP/dual credit classes which got me some scholarships for university. Ended up going to the university in my town that has a huge acceptance rate (like 90), very affordable school, and a great nursing program. Got early acceptance to nursing school and will graduate debt free with a 3.6 GPA. I’m a commuter student too, which many people kind of looked down on. People used to ask me why I didn’t aim higher and choose the “college experience” somewhere more competitive. Sometimes it’s not all about that. As a first generation student, I just thrived off academic validation. I had a great high school experience, but just because I’m book smart doesn’t mean I’m smart! The education system is designed in a way that many people may not thrive in. People also have hard life experiences or responsibilities going on outside of school. At the end of the day, this stuff is kind of arbitrary. It was important to me at the time, but it’s not everything! There’s more important stuff. Plus my school district doesn’t have the greatest point system. My school had like 14 valedictorians my year and like 5 salutatorians just because they went off gpa. That’s when I realized it’s all kind of meaningless 😂 ooh also my friend is insanely smart. She got a 96 on the ASVAB and a 34 on the ACT. She dropped out of college because lectures are hard for her. Doesn’t mean anything bad!
I had a 4.6 weighted too and went to an affordable state school and commuted. Graduated last year debt free but I agree tests and GPA are not everything.

I graduated college with an art degree in specific field that I absolutely hate, because I was “lost” and was forced with the limited options this university had. Now I’m working a degrading retail job in my town…for the moment, lol.
I never took schooling seriously, so after college I self-educated myself in a ton of topics. I don’t really regret anything, only because I get to work on my art projects in my free time.

@@chompsfn4357 weighted means upper level classes like honors/ap count higher than 4.0, usually 5.0 for A, 4.0 for B and so on. Unweighted doesn't consider any of that and treats all classes as equal
They are all smart and have great intuition and they pay attention to details and what others say, wish them all success!
When Jaelle said that she suffered from chronic illness and it could be hard to judge intelligence and school grades based on that I understood completely. I have the same issue and it was hard missing like a month of school or a couple weeks every so often and then coming back and being dropped in the middle of everything. A lot of the times I was confused for the math classes but everything else I did well in. A lot of people were surprised when I would come back and ace my exams having been there so little and still keeping up with them or getting better sometimes. However, it’s not to say that my gpa didn’t still suffer because of it. It was a lot😩

GPA does say a lot about a person but doesn’t automatically equal intelligence, it mostly says how competent, responsible and strong willed you are; Which makes sense for the system to be that way, because being intelligent would serve no meaning if that person is incompetent and irresponsible. (Sorry for my grammar this isn’t my first language)
We had a really weird system at my high school. Since the 4.0 GPA was the highest achievable GPA, we technically had 8 valedictorians out of 200 graduates.🙃

Yo what she said about following the crowd and doing better when everyone around her was doing better, that's something I never considered but it's so true. Probably honestly one of the primary draws of competitive/prestigious schools.
I’m curios how you can have a 2.0 and be in four AP classes. Most schools need a higher GPA (like a 3.5) to be placed into them. Although, I know online learning has messed things up a lot.

I go to a small magnet school were there is only like 80 kids in my grade. And our high school is in the low 300s. Cause we are small everyone in our grade has to take the same classes including AP class. Everyone has to take it but kids the AP test is optional. Everyone in my grade is taking AP Chem and World History even though most cannot keep up with it. The 2.0 boy could be in a similar situation plus his parents are pushing him to do well also so that may be why
hi! im no longer taking those AP classes. i had a 4.1 when starting the last 3, but i struggled more with them and wasnt allowed (i needed parental permission) to drop those classes in favor of regular ones. thats why i ended up with a 2.0!

I think that’s for certain AP Classes. Then again, i had a very subpar grade in pre calculus and was warned about it, but still got accepted into AP Calc (yes, i have an A in that class, i was just lazy during quarantine when i had Pre Cal)
This was honestly such an insightful video. All the students seem so grounded and aware of how insignificant grades truly are, even though the school system makes them seem like the most importsnt thing. Very refreshing!

High school is really about how well you play the game. I was never more than in the top 40% of my class but now I’m a doctoral student at Johns Hopkins. College was where I really found my passion for medicine and dove into it.
jubilee, next time when you do a video like this, use unweighted gpas! weighted gpas vary a lot by the school grading scale and the availability of ap classes. unless these kids all go to the same school, it's not a fair comparison.
Unweighted GPA wouldn't be fair either because people can take extremely easy classes and have a 4.0
take an AP class and then reread that.
@@Ookashay of course both systems have their problems, but unweighted gpas are the most fair way to compare students from different schools which is exactly why college admission councils use it to make comparisons. the rigor demonstrated by weighted gpas mean nothing when you can't ensure that all teachers are teaching a certain honors/ap class in the same way. it also reflects badly on students who go to schools where they only offer very few honors/ap classes or don't even offer them at all. not to mention there are some schools that use a 7.0+ scale just to inflate their students' gpa.
@@imawakemymindisalive13 i took all the ap classes available at my high school and graduated as the valedictorian. i fully understand how different classes can affect someone's gpa. the difference between you and me is that i don't attach 100% of my self-worth to my gpa (judging by your comment history), so i'm competent enough to realize that gpas aren't as straightforward as people paint them out to be. there's a lot of nuance that you won't see if you aren't doing any critical thinking.

It is hard to compare GPAs across schools though. At my school the top GPA is 5.0 and there are several there. But in others the highest is 4.6 ish because scaling is different
Which is why you shouldn’t compare the GPA number. You should compare the actual grades.
I remember when I joined cyber patriots, speech & debate, and mock trial. Everyone was so shocked when they found I was actually a straight C student. The freshmen were so disappointed when they were hoping I was gonna give them advice for AP and SAT testing. Since I told them I just took mainstream classes.

I don’t live in america but I get why Siena was surprised she was at the top because I also go to a competitive ish school and I got all 7s and 8s (A and A/A*) on my mock exams and you still manage to feel slightly disappointed almost everyone around u is doing better than you. I told myself at the start of this year I’ll be so proud if I get all 7s and a few 6s.
Each of these kids was kind, intelligent, and successful in their own way! The future is bright!

@@Mateo-yk9xq I think it depends on what you mean by fail. Complete failure, sure that's true what you say. But there are a lot of middle-of-the-pack students who end up becoming very successful (i.e., high wages, high status). And that's because a high GPA is not the best indicator of success, even though many people with high GPAs are successful. There is even some evidence (academic research) that putting too much emphasis on grades and traditional schooling is detrimental to future success. We can see that clearly with creatives and many entrepreneurial types, where being too conformist is actually a detriment to success in those areas.
They didn't specify if it was unweighted or weighted. Weighed cap at 5 I believe and unweighted at 4. Unweighted count the weight of the grades you get in AP and regular classes to be the same.
This was 100% weighted at least for the AP classes. My school did grades on the percentage scale so AP classes added 10% to your grade (an 85 becomes a 95) but when the same class got put on my college transcript as they were through a dual enrollment program it was the actual unweighted grade. So my high school GPA was boosted by them but my college GPA was actually lowered
This was weighted for them all, but I don’t think that it was checked if their schools all ranked the same… the one person said that a bunch of people at their school have 5.0s. That’s pretty much impossible considering that you have to take PE and all sorts of other classes and there’s only a limited amount of AP/honors courses… Some schools rank out of a 5.5 or that to boost their students GPAs more or put AP classes as higher than honors
It’s much more than gpa, APs , honors. There are also mitigating factors such as technology access, family surroundings, iep/504 status, internet access, food security, vocational training.
I’m a student with a disability (autism spectrum disorder)- I’m about to graduate a distance learning program in June of this year. My classes are 100 percent online with class once a week in the evenings. My grade is currently a b average. In fall I’ll be transfer over to a community college.
The founder of the college internship programs - transition programs started out at community college and ended up getting his doctorate degree. The college internship programs are one of the top transition programs for hfa adults
Great to see that these kids understand that GPA really does not matter… or at least not the most important thing. It was my driving force in high school and instead of actually enjoying my education, I fell victim to trying to be the perfect straight A student. Wish I had learned this sooner, luckily I redeemed myself in college!

as a highschool student i feel like someones GPA should not be a way to judge their intelligence, getting a high GPA really only means you put in a lot of effort and time
Effort and time is important though. Definitely not the whole picture that shows intelligence. But if your going to go through schooling. Time and effort is the most important ingredient to make it through the system.

I was homeschooled and didn’t go to public school because I flunked all of middleschool. I dropped out of homeschooling when I was 16. I went to the technical center for Mechatronics, though, and ended up getting a public school student of the year award and was the top of my class. They made a glitch in the Highschool I was districted for and put me on the graduation roster (I didn’t go to the school and wasn’t a public school student)- I had found out at midnight the day before. The next day I walked the graduation stage without a diploma or a GED. I also passed the Highschool requirement test in 9th grade and started taking college courses in 10th grade. I’d consider myself very average intelligence. School does not tell you how smart you are, trust me.

I graduated last year with a 1.8 GPA. Most people think that means in a dumbass who didnt apply himself but I tried everything possible to be successful during Highschool. I went to every tutor on school for help during my Junior year and I had a 2.4 GPA. But when we had online school for my entire Senior year my grades slipped really bad bc I couldnt handle doing school work without a actual teacher in front of me. Hopefully when I apply to schools in later on this year I can get into one. Bc I refuse to even entertain the fact that I peaked education wise in Highschool
Just go to a local community college and get a college GPA from there, then use that GPA to apply to bigger schools. That 1.8 high school GPA is gonna have you hitting brick walls otherwise

As much as quarantine sucked, I’m so thankful I help me realize what actually matters when it comes to education! It’s easy to get caught up in societal/cultural expectations and forget to LIVE the teens years that we won’t get back. We’ve got one life, so time is of the essence ‼️

I was totally what David described- I never really tried too hard in high school (or college) and just kinda went with the flow. Yes I did my homework but I never studied a lot or put in extra effort, and I had a 4+ in high school and 4.0 in college (not trying to brag, I don't even use my degree really, I run a home daycare lol). School just came really easy to me, but I was also super lazy and socially anxious so I never joined clubs or anything.
I literally remember being in second grade and pretending I couldn't read as well as I could so that in class for assignments I could read the easy "Biscuit" books. Meanwhile, in my free time I was reading The Babysitters Club and Matilda

I wasn’t the best student in high school from my freshman and sophomore year I had a 2.0 gpa then my junior and senior year I maintain a 3.5 due to sports lol- my coach did not let us play unless we did well in our classes. But after I went to community college and transferred to university and honestly looking back it’s so interesting to see how grades in high school meant so much when it really didn’t..! I know it’s different for everyone especially individuals going to university after high school high school grades do matter but honestly I seen myself doing so much better in college compared to high school.
True, I did well in High School, had like a 3.9. I decided to go to a community college first because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to major in and I wanted to save money. The only draw back was that it was kind of difficult to actually transfer to a University because the counseling was awful. It took me way longer that it should’ve.

The amount AP's taken really surprises me, since if I had done any AP my GPA would have most definitely went down. That stuff can really screw you if u don't do well in the class.

You still probably can do some work outside highschool (charity, volunteering) and/or be in band/dance squad/sport team etc., also if there isn't group you want to be in in your school - you can start one ;)
GPA scale is different for different school districts. If one district has a maximum of 4.0 and another 5.0, any comparisons would be meaningless.
I was a straight A student until my junior year when we started doing online learning and quarantine-ing. I failed 2 classes that semester. Then my senior year I started missing a ton of days (40 absences and 39 tardys), luckily I'm still graduating though.
