There was a bog, A rattlin' bog, A rare bog, A rattlin' bog, The bog down in the valley-oh O ro the rattlin' bog The bog down in the valley-oh A rare bog the rattlin' bog The bog down in the valley-oh Now, in this bog, There was a tree, A rare tree, A rattlin' tree, The tree in the bog, And the bog down in the valley-oh! Now, on this tree, There was a limb, A rare limb, A rattlin' limb, The limb on the tree, And the tree in the bog, And the bog down in the valley-oh! Now, on this limb, There was a branch, A rare branch, A rattlin' branch, The branch on the limb, And the limb on the tree, And the tree in the bog, And the bog down in the valley-oh! On this branch, There was a twig, A rare twig, A rattlin' twig, The twig on the branch And the branch on the limb, And the limb on the tree, And the tree in the bog, And the bog down in the valley-oh! On this twig, There was a leaf, A rare leaf, A rattlin' leaf, The leaf on the twig, And the twig on the branch, And the branch on the limb, And the limb on the tree, And the tree in the bog, And the bog down in the valley-oh! On this leaf, There was a nest, A rare nest, A rattlin' nest, The nest on the leaf, And the leaf on the twig, And the twig on the branch, And the branch on the limb, And the limb on the tree, And the tree in the bog, And the bog down in the valley-oh! Now in this nest, There was an egg, A rare egg, A rattlin' egg, The egg in the nest, And the nest on the leaf, And the leaf on the twig, And the twig on the branch, And the branch on the limb, And the limb on the tree, And the tree in the bog, And the bog down in the valley-oh!
I hope to goodness I would never fall in the bog but seriously this is a rousing song in which Scotsmen can be eternally proud of their kinsmen and country
Superb!....love the Corries! Brought back many happy memories of "Bunion" in the Bobbin Mill in Aberdeen in the 1970's (Whatever happened to "Tartan Special" by the way (it's in the video)...great beer!
I saw the Corries play at the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness in the early 80s and what a mighty fine afternoon concert of scottish music song poetry and instrumentals it was if there were no other embassadors of their craft talents and skills The Corries would be impossible to beat
It's longer than that. "And on that feather there was a flea, a rare flea a rattlin' flea, with a flea on the feather, feather on the bird, bird on the egg and the egg on the nest and the nest on the leaf and a leaf on a twig, twig on the branch and a branch on a limb, limb on a tree and a tree in the bog, the bog down in the valley oh!"
It goes even further than that! there's the leg on the flea, and the shoe on the leg, and the heel on the shoe, and the nail on the heel, and the angel on the nail... and so on...
Hey Drummer, I know PP&M well but didn't know they sang this. They are utter perfection. I saw them in concert several times when I was a kid in Oz - back in the 60s :-). They were the BEST concerts I went to a Beatles concert but you couldn't hear anything because 99.9% of the audience was screaming. Cheers.
Haven't heard this song for a quite a while! I remember listening to an Irish folk band on a few weekends in Sydney do this song, really gets the crowd going.
My school choir used to use this song to warm up it was honestly one of our favourites lol if one person sang "down in the valley o'" on the coach to any event no word every person on the coach would join in! There'd be girls with dabs of make-up on joining in lol xxx
I think he's missing some... the one i've always heard old men sing has a flea on a feather, feather on a bird, bird on the egg, egg on the nest, nest on the leaf, leaf on the twig, twig on the branch, branch on the limb, limb on the tree, tree in the bog, and the bog down in the valley-o
Did they forget the bird in the egg in the nest on the leaf on the twig on the branch on the limb on the tree in the bog? I was rather expecting that final piece...
Now in the powder there was a snore. A rare snore, a rattling snore. Snore in the powder and the powder in the diaper and the diaper on the flea and the flea on the feather and the feather on the wing and the wing on the bird and the bird in the egg and the egg in the nest and the nest on the leaf and the leaf on the twig and the twig on the branch and the branch on the limb and the limb on the tree and the tree in the bog and the bog down in the valley-oh.
I think it's because they both speed up, and have increasingly complex lyrics, as the song goes on. Also, 'cos The Corries are reprazentin' they 'hood.
There are other verses , Now in that egg there is a feather a rare feather a rattling feather, Feather in the egg , egg in the nest. Then carry on in the same manner as all the other verses. Now in that feather there is a chic,, Next one, Now on that chic there is a flea. A rare flea. A rattlin' flea The flea doon in the valley oh O ro the rattlin' flea The flea down in the valley-oh A rare flea. A rattlin' flea The flea down in the valley-oh We sang as the first verse, There was a hole A rattlin' hole. A rare hole. A rattlin hole. The hole down in the valley-oh O ro the rattlin' hole The hole down in the valley-oh A rare hole. A rattlin hole. The hole down in the valley-oh
Not trying to be "not nice". Just asking a question. I don't think "wht d fck is this" is nice. I suppose you are American as well? But don't get agitated - there are lots of well-educated Americans around. Afterall, there are about 300 million of them (when you includevthe illegals,) Please also note the use of the word "even".
The best Scottish folk singers of all time. Often equaled never bettered.
.
rarely equalled, never bettered
I agree 👍
Never were equalled in my book
There was a bog,
A rattlin' bog,
A rare bog,
A rattlin' bog,
The bog down in the valley-oh
O ro the rattlin' bog
The bog down in the valley-oh
A rare bog the rattlin' bog
The bog down in the valley-oh
Now, in this bog,
There was a tree,
A rare tree,
A rattlin' tree,
The tree in the bog,
And the bog down in the valley-oh!
Now, on this tree,
There was a limb,
A rare limb,
A rattlin' limb,
The limb on the tree,
And the tree in the bog,
And the bog down in the valley-oh!
Now, on this limb,
There was a branch,
A rare branch,
A rattlin' branch,
The branch on the limb,
And the limb on the tree,
And the tree in the bog,
And the bog down in the valley-oh!
On this branch,
There was a twig,
A rare twig,
A rattlin' twig,
The twig on the branch
And the branch on the limb,
And the limb on the tree,
And the tree in the bog,
And the bog down in the valley-oh!
On this twig,
There was a leaf,
A rare leaf,
A rattlin' leaf,
The leaf on the twig,
And the twig on the branch,
And the branch on the limb,
And the limb on the tree,
And the tree in the bog,
And the bog down in the valley-oh!
On this leaf,
There was a nest,
A rare nest,
A rattlin' nest,
The nest on the leaf,
And the leaf on the twig,
And the twig on the branch,
And the branch on the limb,
And the limb on the tree,
And the tree in the bog,
And the bog down in the valley-oh!
Now in this nest,
There was an egg,
A rare egg,
A rattlin' egg,
The egg in the nest,
And the nest on the leaf,
And the leaf on the twig,
And the twig on the branch,
And the branch on the limb,
And the limb on the tree,
And the tree in the bog,
And the bog down in the valley-oh!
Thank you for the lyrics; I shall note that no bird would consruct a nest on a leaf!

You must be American? This is a very well known song in Ireland, Scotland and England. I'm Australian and even I know it - sang it at school.

Drummer, if you've just discovered the Corries listen to Leezzie (Lizzie) Lindsay on youtube. It's very beautiful.

All of these songs weren't just tales instead they were representative of all people young or old knowledgeable or not
I think it's because they both speed up, and have increasingly complex lyrics, as the song goes on. Also, 'cos The Corries are reprazentin' they 'hood.
