Mickey Thomas has an incredible voice! He is one of the rare few who sounds better live than the recorded version. His vocal range is amazing! He still gives me chills like he did in the 1970s as a teen. I love this song! Thank you for sharing! ❤❤❤
You right Jayvee, it's NOT easy to perform that way. For Mickey Thomas, maybe it is because he's doing so smooth and effortlessly, but man every note and every phrase is pitch perfect, and the topper is the TONE his voice has, it's just soooo nice... I can listen to this song every day.
When I sang in a band, I could hit the notes and stay in key, but it was work. The EFFORTLESSNESS in Mickey's performance is incredible. It's like he's out for a walk. People don't even know.
This is what I like about the 70's and 80's and before that. Singers back then could actually sing. No help from voice digitizing, or auto tune and all the bs. Just real, raw, music.
Singer is Mickey Thomas. This song brings back memories from the 70s. The guitar player is Elvin Bishop. Mickey sang with Jefferson Starship. Awesome song!
How did I not know this? My favorite Starship song is of course Sara, because as a little girl (born in '81) I thought that song was written for me and they just misspelled my name 😂. After hearing this song again (I've always loved it as well) I can now recognize it as the same voice from Sara! Thank you for that information, it's always cool to learn pieces of trivia I never knew 😄
Mickey Thomas at the end...🎤 DROP! And I LOVED your reaction! You so appreciate great, awesome talent and I love watching you, watch something amazing and I couldn't agree more!!👏
its too bad it degenerated to dross like "We Built This City". Mickey's pipes are sooo top shelf, i'd like to have seen him finish up solo, or with a band that could really showcase his talent, which Starship wasn't really doing in the 80s....but you are spot on...when it opens with..."Jane, you say its all over for you and me, girl", one is put on notice. He can command a song.
@@kilgoretrout3966 I saw them in concert when I was in college. The Outfield opened for them. Mickey was fantastic! They did Jane as the last song. They took a bow and began walking off stage. Mickey hopped over some piece of equipment on the floor and fell. He was a trooper! He just hopped up, smiled, straightened up and cooly walked off. lol. Then the audience yelled for an encore and they came back out. He could have come out alone and sang and we would have loved it. I agree with you about Starship at that time, they didn't showcase his talent.
Elvin Bishop, the guitar player wrote this song, but he didn't think his voice could do the song justice, so he asked Mickey Thomas, one of his backup singers, to sing. The rest, as they say, is history.
@sherrypierce1061 Mickey Thomas is in the blue jumpsuit. There's a video on TH-cam where he's being interviewed about this song and where he said Elvin Bishop didn't think his voice was right for the song. So Elvin asked Mickey if he wanted to try singing it and the rest as they say, is history.
Man we had it all. Midnight special, Don kirshners rock concert, followed on saturdays with american bandstand and soul train, 70s by far the greatest era for music
Not many reactions to "Jane" by Jefferson Starship...not sure why...it is one of the quintessential rock songs and one of the greatest rock vocal performances ever. That one will show you what Mickey can really do.
I watched both faithfully as a tween in the 70s. I remember this one and it was where I saw/heard Queen for the first time. What great music we had 🎶🎵🥰
It's Mickey Thomas on lead vocals. And his voice was definitely amazing. He sang with some other bands (as Neil Esposito says "Jane" by Jefferson Starship is a notable one). Even when he wasn't singing lead, you could ALWAYS identify him -- no mistaking that amazing voice.
i graduated high school in 1976.was on the radio a lot,we had so much good music back then.i still have every 45 record i bought, and i bought a lot of them back then
I was 18 when this came out in the UK. It was one of the classic ‘end of the night’ slow dances, with Mickey Thomas’s vocals so spot on that many a couple began their romance to this ballad. It came back into the spotlight when it was used on the brilliant soundtrack of the film Guardians of the galaxy, (starring Chris Pratt) and rediscovered by at least two new generations! The soundtracks to Guardians one and two give new life to some great classics, you should give them a whirl Jay, there are some gems in there. Bless you for helping to keep some kind of normality going in strange times!🥰🥂
You're the biggest part of me is always going to be my go-to smooth easy rock song. May even crack my top 10 list if i could ever whittle a list of thousands of songs down. LOL .
Hey Jayvon, I feel sorry for your generation not being able to experience this level of musical greatness in concert, but glad you are able to see and share these amazing performances w your subs. I got to see Elvin Bishop as the opening act for Heart on their 80s BeBe Le Strange tour. They warmed up the audience w a 45 min set closing w this song (save the best for last). What a great night of music...
Some song facts: The lead vocalist of this song is Mickey Thomas, who later went on to join the "Starship" band. Elvin Bishop is the blues guitarist who was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of fame in 1998. xoxo
You need to buy a great big steak dinner for whoever recommended this to you, because they sent you to one of the best performances you'll ever see. Mickey Thomas' singing is effortless, simply effortless and that's the hallmark of 100% talent. BTW, this performance was from a TV show called "The Midnight Special". If you want to see some incredible performances, look for episodes of this TV show. Everyone performed 100% live and there are just some unbelievable performances. I'm glad you liked this one so much!
One of Rocks' greatest ever voices, Mickey Thomas' vocal range and power has been matched by exactly who else? Be very careful with any names you add to this conversation!!. Check out both Jane and Sara by Jefferson Starship with Mickey singing lead. You'll love both. Love watching your reactions when you hit on the real genuine gems I will never tire of!
Elvin Bishop was my favorite when this album came out I played it till it wouldn't play anymore, drove my friends crazy 😉Thanks for bringing back great memories
Yes, he put some stank on that guitar solo! I love this song. I was a little girl when this song was out but to this day, it takes me back. This folks is what real talent sounds like! Thank you for this video
Mickey Thomas is one of the most vastly underrated vocalists ever. That may have something to do with his very wobbly choice of material over the years. This great song here may be his signature vocal, and it proves without a doubt that this man had a tremendously soulful voice, but if you really want to hear this man cut loose, if you really want to hear this man slay and kill, check out his vocals on "Silent Night." (with the Elvin Bishop Band) Yes, it's the classic Christmas song, but Mickey turned it into a soulful, foot-stomping, gospel-ized, earth shaking, get-cho-ass-outta-yo-chair-and-start-moving type of song. It's not only his greatest soul-shaking moment, it's one of the greatest soul-shaking moments in the history of music. Look it up here on TH-cam .... and thank me later. lol
Whew!! What a Voice♥️ This song has always given me a chill. Just his voice alone is so powerful but those lyrics Wow! Loved your reaction and love that you have a way of really tuning in to the instruments and really finding the value in an artist voice/vocals. Thank You for bringing back the Joy!!
Elvin Bishop gained renown as an original member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in 1964 and went on to star in his own touring band, rocking folks all over the US for 45 years to this day. He is recognized by guitarists as one of the greats and his powerful, tasty, and thoughtful rhythm and solo work here shows why. Check the diminished chord at 5:56. Mickey Thomas' stunning vocals, along with the great band, made this number an instant R&B classic. I saw him do this live at the Aquarius in North Seattle in 1976. You should have been there! A flawless performance. Mickey Thomas' voice is ridiculous. I think this sounded better than the record. My first concert was in 1977 and Elvin Bishop was part of the lineup. I still remember them singing this song. It was very exciting for a 14 year old girl 🤗 I could put this on repeat and just let it go 😌
Elvin Bishop himself is playing the red guitar. He is a phenomenal jazz/blues guitarist. Mickey Thomas singing. He went on to sing with Jefferson Starship.

Yea and Mickey still sings this and his songs he co-wrote for starship which he still performs with today. He’s in his early 70’s now
You appreciate good music, regardless of what era it comes from. That's the way it should be. Thank you for being here........
Mickey Thomas grew up in GA and hung out with the greats, in terms of blues and R&B. He has the soul down and his voice is great even today!!!!!
