We had 5 schnauzers - all but one lived to be 16-17 years old. We went through the “do we want another dog?” thing as well. The youngest two were brother and sister, and we actually had them put down at the same time. That was really hard, but it just worked out that way, and looking back, I’m glad it did. They came into the world together and were together for 17 years. I don’t think one could have made it without the other. Anyway, that lasted for about 4 months, and the house just seemed so empty without them. So We decided to get just one because we also traveled ( the good news is that there quite a few “pet friendly” hotels now. Since I knew we would be traveling with the dog, I decided to obedience train the new dog. I just couldn’t imagine any other breed except a miniature schnauzer so we found a little female, and I took her to obedience training. She was just wonderful to travel with. She didn’t bark or cause any trouble anywhere we went - one of the most well mannered, well behaved dogs I’ve ever known. Schnauzers are so smart and so easy to train that we had no problems with obedience training. After about 4 years, we felt that she really needed a companion that she could run and play with since we were already in our late fifties so we got another one. Since then, we’ve always had two, and we’ve always maintained a 4 - 5 year difference in age. It just seemed like we were constantly having to face having to dread and then finally have to make the hard decision to put one down. So we now keep some space between them age-wise. I say “we”, but it’s just me now. My husband passed away three years ago, and I don’t think I would have made it through that if I hadn’t had my dogs. I’d probably still be sleeping in the recliner in the living room. It was really hard to go to the bedroom without him. Having the dogs to keep it from being so feeling so empty got me through that. I’m 75 now, and I’m so glad to have them here with me now that it’s just me. Got my first miniature schnauzer in 1979, and have had at least two ever since. It works for me, but everyone has to make that choice for themselves. I wouldn’t give up all the joy they’ve brought me over the years even though saying goodbye is just heart-wrenching. All the years of enjoyment make up for the sadness in the long run. None of mine ever had any health problems until the last six months to a year of their lives - guess I’m just lucky on that score, but I’ve had a lot of schnauzers in the last 45 years. Hope the rest of your pack live very long, and happy lives.
I just lost my little girl Katy K two weeks ago. I have had her since she was 6 weeks old. She passed a month before her 17th birthday. I’m working on getting another one. I am 76 years old. I need one in my house. She was a special little girl.
@@susymorris1457 So sorry for your loss. I understand how hard it is to lose our fur babies........Happy to hear you had so many wonderful years with your sweet little girl Katy K........ Bless you with getting your future fur baby...... They bring us so much joy I can't imagine not having a fur baby in my life......Take good care!
I was about to comment the exact same thing. I can still hear him and I don’t doubt that you can still hear him too Kim. My own boy reminds me of him as he is also quite mouthy 😂 I think it’s great when they are so vocal
I love my schnauzer mom! I'm partial to magnum because I have a black mini, but mr grant and miggy were my favorites. love you! congrats on being a grandmother :)
I wish I was 50 again. I’m in my 70s. My advice to you is to live your life as you go along..especially while you are young enough to do things in good health. Don’t wait until the boys are gone to travel and visit places….even it’s just weekends. You never know what health issues you’ll have when you’re my age. When you lose mobility, you lose ALOT of life.
Hi Kim, thank you for coming on today just chatting with us. You can't know now whether or not you'll want another dog 10 years down the line. When I was 54, I didn't think that at 65 I would be alone with my beautiful mini schnauzer. When there's just 1 or 2 dogs, they are easy to travel with as long as you've put in some time training them. Dog friendly places are getting easier and easier to find. Sending love and keeping you in my prayers. 🙏🏻💜
Thank you for the update. You have made a wonderful difference in the lives of your puppers❤ We all move through different seasons of life. Having fur babies are like having kids still at home. Enjoy the next season of your life and embrace it knowing you've made a beautiful difference in the lives of your fur babies ♥️🙏♥️🙏♥️🙏
Kim, you have mentioned before about wanting to travel. I think that would be great for you and Tom. My wife and I have agreed we will not have multiple schnauzers after ours have passed. We may have one, we will see. Glad everyone is doing reasonably well there. Blessings to all.
I am 65yo , we travel with our 2 dogs. As a child we traveled with our mini schnauzer. It really is hard to be without a dog when you have always had one. 2 dogs is the perfect number ❤❤
I know that with Miggy's passing you were devastated. When you talked about him today I was thinking that I was still missing him myself. Loved his huge personality and loved his bark. Such a little entertainer. I can understand why it was so difficult to read about him. Hopefully that deep pain will continue to get better but he will never be forgotten as well as Mr Grant. I'm glad you now have your grandson and looking forward to your future. Bless you for loving and taking such good care of your boys. ❤❤❤
I'm 65 and have 2 senior cats and my 10 yr old schnauzer..not planning to replace any of them..just making remaining time pleasant and fulfilling ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I agree. I feel the same way. I have had multiple dogs/schnauzers....cats. I am 61 my husband is 64. I love them all to death but we sometimes say we want our life back someday. We are down to 2 dogs and 4 cats. I know how you feel. We love them like our kids but look forward to the day we can do things. Someone always has to be home with the animals. You don't have to apologize or explain.
Good for you. Take some time out and tick off a few of those bucket list items. I had 4 dogs and am down to two. One of those dogs is a puppy. I think I will always want one or two, but I am also thinking about the financial responsibility in retirement. That's another thing. I never had the confidence in myself to groom my dogs, and I can't believe how much it costs now to do that. Plus vet bills. You still have full house and a very full life.
I love you and all your puppies. I giggled when you said "5 dogs are very many". I totally understand that you couldn't make videos or answer notes while grieving after Miggy passed. It's understandable and I, and I'm sure most others, understand. Hugs 🤗
I get it Kim! My husband and I are 59 and 61 and, even though we miss our Sasha, we hesitate to another dog because we plan to do a lot of traveling in retirement. We also can't stand the thought of having to go through the grief of having to say goodbye again. But, never say never, so that could change. And I am the same as far as what my grands call me, I'm Gramma, that's it! And I LOVE it!!!! Blessings!
My boyfriend and I have 5 dogs. I know exactly what you mean about how hard it can be to do anything. I have 2 Mini Schnauzers, a Shih Tzu mix, Red Heeler, and Redbone Coonhound! Vet bills and food are the biggest expense in our budget!

I hope that the rest of your pack gets to live good, long, healthy lives, and that once things settle down, you and Tom can now prioritize yourselves and unwind! You deserve it! ❤
I totally understand where you are coming from. Aug 19 will be 4 years when I lost my mini Maxwell, he was 16 years old. He traveled with us everywhere we could take him. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him. I have his picture taped to my computer monitor in my work office. I’m 64 and hope to retire in 2 1/2 years and plan to travel more. As cute as Schnauzers are and I miss my Max terribly, it has been nice to enjoy the freedom of not having that responsibility. ❤
You're right. Pets keep you at home, which makes sense when you are still at home with your kids. The next phase of life is opening up to spending your time where and when you want. And your kids used to be the back up if you needed it, and now they've moved on too.
I get it! I got what might be my last schnauzer or dog as I am 65. I got her as a puppy and she desperately needed a friend also a puppy Bichon. Wasnt going to get a puppy but he was a good fit. They are the best of friends! It is alot of work and I certainly always worry about them to go somewhere. No one to help and boarding expensive! I have alot of health issues as well. To add to denise's reply, here's where the other boys' names came from (based on one of Kim's old videos): Mozzie - character from White collar Max - full name Maximus, Kim named him herself (him being another M-name was just a coincidence lol) Marley - from the movie Marley and Me Magnum - from the show Magnum P.I. Milo - I'm not sure if Kim explained his name, but Milo was a rescue from a bad home situation, so I'm assuming he was always named Milo
My grandbabies call me Yammy because my name starts with a Y and Yammy just stuck...LOL. I dread the day one of my boys has to carry one without the other. My Tyson came from an abusive and neglectful situation and he did not know how to relax. Bailey taught Tyson how to accept love and trust humans. They are codependent and I don't know how they would do without each other. I never want to be without a dog but i also want to travel. I will always have a small dog.
@SchnauzerMom I know the feeling. Never seems appropriate now but who's to say you won't look in the eyes of that one special pup and the love you had from Miggy may creep back into your soul. That is how we ended up with Tyson. Maybe, one day and if that doesn't happen, it's still okay.
