    Chet a little trick I learned in my career of welding mostly pipe welding is that if you cut or weld on galvanize and breath in the smoke and it hurts to breath drink some milk the calcium will wash the galvanize away, might help some day...

      I have a friend that started to weld galvanized steel, next thing he knew he was waking up in the hospital. I've welded it and never had a problem. A welder told me about drinking milk, I don't know how that helps your lungs. This welder said he welded a lot of galvanized steel and always drank milk before and after and never had a problem.

    Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable.
    The hitch on that dump trailer you have is really heavy duty work. Wow.
    Your decision to let a machine shop do the fixing and welding was a good one. That is heavy duty work on that hitch. But you all got it done and fixed and ready to go again. Good job Chet and Eric snd Brody. Good to go again.
    Changing the axle setting on the combine went better than it looked. The three of you did a great job changing the rear axle setting. Hopefully that will help with the header setting. Good job guys. Ready to go now.
    The walkway mess you put on the upstairs walkway looks really good. Fits well also and is strong with you all walking on it.
    Another nice job done everyone. Looks great.
    Busy time with all these maintenance jobs. Doing great.
    My compliments to all of you.
    Thanks for everything Chet.

    Chet if you preheat that shaft and collar after welding you need the post heat the same area to relax the weld so it won't get a check in the weld using a 7018 LH around 210 to 250 amps should give you good penetrations, good luck...

  • @olenilsen4660
    @olenilsen4660 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Wow, that trailer held up really well for loosing the hitch! That thing is sturdy! I would ask for a new pin that extends well into the hitch piece, and ask them for options to strengthen that bond. They might come up with some really clever options for you to never ever have this problem again.
    Lowering that rear axle on the combine should do the trick - I personnally like to run the header a bit upswept too - to prevent dirt and rocks going in. I haven´t run all the crops that you do in the US, but I do know that it is cheaper to leave a bit of yield, than to repair a combine that has been feeding on rocks. One thing, though, I would fix the bolts lightly, lower the combine and only then tighten those bolts properly. Because these bolts are flat, the axle might set during operation later, and the bolts could come loose. Please check them after a day or two during harvest.
    I love the walkway in the bin site. Now Dougo can go upstairs and have a nap waiting for all of you to fill those bins :) How are you confused about the insulation of this loft of his? ;P

    Next time it breaks get a machine shop to build a new one and tell them you want the hitch end to have full penetration weld and the back have it threaded with a nut custom made to that shaft and it will last until that thing rusts back into the earth. Properly done it can be bulletproof. Something else will fail before the pin hitch.

    • @David-xl8zf
      @David-xl8zf ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You just don't weld a flange on to the end of a shaft period. Especially if it has to hold forces in all directions. Either thread it on, use a nut to hold it or machine it down.

      @@David-xl8zf it can be welded if done properly. I agree that having a single piece milled would be very strong but to ensure how strong it is it would need testing to make sure of no defects in the steel. The steel of today is not flawless a lot of it came from recycling and any of it from China is complete crap full of impurities and flaws. I have seen this first hand. I’ll put it to you this way I wouldn’t even want my little grandson riding a bicycle made with Chinese steel. Maybe there is some good Chinese steel out there but I have not seen any and I have literally seen and worked with hundreds of tons maybe even thousands of tons and have had to cut out and properly fix delaminating layers and interior cracks and even air bubbles inside thick plate steel straight off rail cars coming from the shipyards that was a few years ago when I was doing structural steel but I have seen it in Chinese parts as well the steel tearing and completely wearing out in a small fraction of the time of American steel.

  • @Kenny-rn2xc
    @Kenny-rn2xc ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You should have had them make a longer pin so it could have been fillet welded at the back. I worry that the back weld will break and the pin will pull out when being pulled. That would be really bad.
