I had a japanese boss before and he used to do it to me and I got really confused but then he did it to all the other japanese employees including my seniors after awhile i didnt really care anymore.
honestly the guys pronounciation is a bit weird so it's understandable she struggled. if the 'hi ken' was a joke, she is much smarter than she lets on.
