In Cthulhu: Death May Die, inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, you and your fellow players represent investigators in the 1920s who instead of trying to stop the coming of Elder Gods, want to summon those otherworldly beings so that you can put a stop to them permanently. You start the game insane, and while your long-term goal is to shoot Cthulhu in the face, so to speak, at some point during the game you'll probably fail to mitigate your dice rolls properly and your insanity will cause you to do something terrible - or maybe advantageous. Hard to know for sure.
The game has multiple episodes, and each of them has a similar structure of two acts, those being before and after you summon whatever it is you happen to be summoning. If any character dies prior to the summoning, then the game ends and you lose; once the Elder One is on the board, as long as one of you is still alive, you still have a chance to win.
The episodes are all standalone and not contingent on being played in a certain order or with the same players.

I was debating between the first season and mansion of madness as my Cthulhu theme game since they seem the most interesting as far as that theme goes. then once the Kickstarter was announced I backed it and will be picking up season 1 since I'll have a year before this gets delivered and it'll have content that I can mix and match.
S1 on sale for 15% off at Boardlandia with free shipping at $80usd throughout November (while supplies last). That is where I picked it up, along with some extra dice and an extra Elder One.

Season 1 Kickstarter items are available in the new Kickstarter campaign!!! One of the main reasons I'm jumping in. They also announced season 1 and 2 will be reprinted.
They’re so expensive though. More expensive than the new game and its stretch goals combined 😱
It took me a while to find most of ALL of the original C:DMD on eBay over the last two years. I was locked out of the Unspeakable Box and the R'lyeh Rising expansions due to OUTRAGEOUS pricing. I am currently ALL-IN with this because I can finally get the two Expansions I have been wanting for over two years without the insane price-gouging on eBay. Plus this is one of the Top Five games of all-time for me. :)

With the new kickstarter can you get the original game/ does it need the original game?
The kickstarter fully works on its own. If you decide to add the unspeakable box as an optional buy (stretch goals from the first campaign) you need the original box to play the 3 lost episodes from it ( since it was original content for season 1)
the new ks is standalone and sadly u cant get season 1 and 2, but you can get the full KS stretchgoals from the first KS with the Unspeakable box, as well as the big cthulu if u have spare funds
S1 is now available to buy directly from CMON and they are reprinting S2 but you have to buy it seperately, not through the KS.
So want to get into this hear great things about the gameplay mechanics. Unfortunately Adri has trypophobia so can't pull the trigger. Hopefully they implement it into another theme or an IP we like so we can experience it.
I'm leaning to KS Exclusive content...mostly.
S3 + Animal companions + Frost Dice. I'm not going to do S4 (even though the content looks awesome) because I'll keep my shipping lower. I think the Unspeakable box is a FOMO gimmick.
I figure I can pick up S4 in retail down the road for a similar price (an 'assumption' on my part since S2 was $50 on the campaign and I just purchased it last week retail for $50...with free shipping). Sure I miss out on 2 promo cards that are KS Exclusive, but it's only two cards that won't make or break the gameplay.
are the animal companions worth it? what do they add?

From the Board Game Geek forum for this S3 game, most aren't excited about 'animals', but the fact they acts as more relics can be very helpful and add more variety to the game.
I'm in the group that likes more variety...or the option for more variety...in a game, but I'm still on the fence about this specific expansion; whilst leaning to getting it because it is KS Exclusive and I always like more minis to paint.
