    Thank you Manu! Brilliant as always! I spent the morning with my grammar book and still didn't understand when to use the Passato Prossimo and when to use the Imperfetto. This afternoon your tutorial has made it so clear. Wonderful!

    I’m a native Spanish speaker, and when I took Spanish in high school to learn proper writing, la mia professoressa gave us key words to trigger our spoken verb conjugations. “Cuando era niño...” was what we used to trigger the imperfect! È buono sapere che è molto simile all’italiano!!

    Manu, Manu, Manu...ti ringrazio moltissimo!!! Mi hai mostrato tutte le regole che avevo sentito e avevo letto molte volte ma in un modo nuovo. La parte di "setting the scene" soprattutto è nuova per me. E avendo le domande per chiedermi, penso, mi aiuterà. Questo fine settimana mi metto a lavorare di nuovo con tutti i fogli di compiti che ho su imperfetto vs passato prossimo col mio nuovo arsenale. E tu hai ragione....ero disperata!! Sul il punto del mio errore, grazie. Una donna nel mio gruppo Meetup anche mi ha detto questo. Tu sei mitico!!! Baci!!

    5:28 actually we do say “when I was little” in English. That sounds like very little, like 5 or 6 years old. “Young” sounds more like generally speaking, in your teens, in your twenties, etc

    Ciao Manu.
    In portoguese abbiamo i due tempi verbali (passado perfeito, il vostro passato prossimo, ed passado imperfeito, il vostro imperfetto). La mia maestra mi ha detto una maniera per riccordarmi: il perfetto è per una azione que finisce nel tempo, qualcosa che abbiamo fatto una volta (esempio: ho fatto);
    il imperfetto è per azioni che si prolungano nel tempo o che non finiscono (esempio: faceva).
    Forse questo aiuti qualcuno.

    I learned Spanish many years ago. My way of learning these Italian conjugations rapidly is to find verbs that are cognages. For example: abandonar - abandonare. I open up the verb tables of both languages at the same time to compare and contrast. In tricky sentence structure in Italian, I ask myself "how would I construct this in Spanish?" My teacher asked me "how would you construct it in French?" when I began Spanish.

    Hi Manu. Good video. The real question to me is, while living in the north of Italy. when in conversation, do I use the the passato remoto instead of passato prossimo.

    • @italymadeeasy
      @italymadeeasy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Salve Gary! And thanks! Look, in conversation, I have very very rarely heard people from the North of Italy use the passato remoto. Maybe never! They should be using it though, at least for events in the very remote past, like stuff about Emperors, great discoveries etc. "Napoleone invase la Russia nel 1812" sounds a lot better than "Napoleone ha invaso la Russia nel 1812".

    • @tryirish
      @tryirish 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Manu. I am in Liguria. To explain events that started and ended in the past, I have been learning only the passato prossimo for the last three months as I was told, like you said, that they do not really use the passato remoto in the north to do that. But now I feel naked, weak and I am afraid to travel to the south where I am told they use the passato remoto more than the passato prossimo. How about a video sometime on " just in case you listen to a fairy tale audio book retold in Italian, or travel to the south of Italy, This is the way you can describe events in the past i.e. "Change these top verbs from passato prossimo to passato remoto"

    Are there any tricks to forming the imperfect in Italian. For example, in french, the imparfait (imperfect) is formed by taking the nous form of the verb, take off the "ous" and finally add back ais, ait, ions, etc etc.

    • @italymadeeasy
      @italymadeeasy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yes, the imperfetto is formed form the infinitive of the verb, minus the ending -ARE, -ERE, -IRE, with the appropriate endings for the imperfetto added: AVO, AVI, AVA, AVAMO, AVATE, AVANO for are verbs, EVO, EVI, EVA, EVAMO, EVATE, EVANO for ere verbs and IVO, IVI, IVA, IVAMO, IVATE, IVANO for ire verbs.
      An easier way to look at it is to form the imperfetto form the infinitive of the verb, minus the ending -RE.
      Then these endings apply to all verbs in -are, -ere, -ire (unless they are irregular): VO, VI, VA, VAMO, VATE, VANO.

    Ottimo video! Mi sempre chiedeva qual è la differenza tra l'imperfetto e il passato prossimo. Una volta ho chiesto mia madre (cui è mezza italiana) e ha detto che nel Sud si usa l'imperfetto di più e nel nord il passato prossimo. Non mi soddisfava mai ma adesso grazio al tuo ho finalmente capito. Studiavo lo spagnolo a scuola e i tempi sono molto simili. A deposito, sono tedesco ma un grande parte della mia famglia vive a Puglia. Nonostante di che la maggior parte della mia famiglia parla l'italiano nessuno mi l'ha insegnato quando ero piccolo. Quindi lo imparo da autodidatta da 3 anni a volte più e a volte meno seriamente. Al momento studio moltissimo e finalmente capisco la maggior parte delle serie film e dei video su youtube (con sottotitoli). Penso che raggiunga un livello più avanzato ora. Comunque, per favore lasciatemi sapere se trovate alcuni errori

    • @aleksandradavidovic2456
      @aleksandradavidovic2456 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I think that if you want to say that you used to visit your grandmother regularly when you were young you should use imperfetto, and that if you want to say you visited her at some particular time in the past you should use passato prossimo (usually with the time reference in the sentence). And you have to write "quando ero giovane" with E, or "da giovane" ("as a young person"). Hope this helps!

    would one way to explain it be:
    use passato prossimo for events that can be marked on a calendar
    use imperfetto for things that can’t? x

      Not exactly ... and not always ... but almost always !!😉 The Imperfetto highlights the development of an action, it works very well for descriptions.

    I find the grammatical term "past continuous" to describe the tense in which things went on for a period of time in the past. Compare it to the "present continuous"tense, in which things are going on right now, as well as to the "simple past" tense in which things were done once and are now over with.

    Grazie mille Manu! Spiegazione molto buona! Finalmente capisco :) I am still very much a beginner student, and the analogy of the timeline was really helpful to me in particular!

    Grazie Manu! Questo video era molto utile! Un'altra domanda che spesso mi chiedo e' quando usare 'stare + gerundio' e quando usare 'il presente'. Per esempio: "I am eating a pizza". Could you say 'mangio una pizza' or 'sto mangiando una pizza'? Grazie mille!

      usiamo il gerundio solo se stiamo veramente e letteralmente facendo quell'azione nel momento in cui parliamo! Altrimento no, usiamo il presente!
