Unbelievable, with a gas station practically across the street the fire department saw no urgency in conducting a fast response, simply amazing….this department needs an intensive retraining immediately!

There is a gas tank in the car that can leak and become very dangerous... right? It took a full 7 minutes before a single drop of water touched that car. That's Unacceptable.
There are fireproof tarps that can be deployed in seconds and draped over the car to deprive the fire of oxygen and smother the fire before it gets crazy.

Looks like a training day for the unfortunate owner. Car was total loss anyway from full gas tank, but this was painful and amusing to watch.
Took six minutes for water on target after arrival!
0:50 hose line unfurled; 02:00 'Captain' passes the uncharged nozzle; 04:45 line abandoned (never charged); 5:40 2nd resource line run out; 07:00 water on target.
Crew never stayed on the upwind side when dousing to maintain their defensible space. Going downwind never was required as the car was toasted already.
Always respond with a Halligan or pry tool in your [gloved] hand. You needed it for the hood/trunk.
What happened to the 1st engine operation? No one filled the 3000L tank after last use? Or, no one has maintained the pump?
Would've been faster and efficient to connect at... the hydrant across the street.
Time wasted rolling and drying unused hoses and refilling the 2nd engine.
No one standing by to pop the hood either.
Learn to don turn-outs and Air-Pak enroute too. Vehicle fires are a class-B with hazardous output.

I think it’s a matter of training when it comes to certain areas. I live in the Phoenix area at the moment, and recently I was driving where there happened to be a vehicle fire. The firefighters responding drove past where in an area where the smoke was visible, and like not even 5 minutes later as I drove past the car that was on fire, it was out. This video was like unbelievably long compared to what I witnessed. I’m sure that there’s some ting that goes in in the brain that the more times you respond the faster you become, and they definitely respond more in a city like Phoenix vs this rural area.

The engineer forgot to pull the air brake…. The Roto Ray and the white lights should go out when you pull the break, the truck won’t pump if the break hasn’t been pulled. I’m sure they blamed it on a “pump failure”

    • @markdeprimo2860
      @markdeprimo2860 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

At 0:07, you can hear the driver pull the parking brake. Not all apparatus are wired to have the Mars light turn off when the brakes are applied and yes a truck can pump with the brakes not pulled. Either he didn't know what he was doing or it was a major pump failure. After 24 years as a firefighter and 21 as a Chief Engineer, I've seen it happen. Guys get the "Cookie eye" and forget the basics. Luckily, this didn't happen on a structure and hopefully the problem (driver or pump) was resolved.

I noticed the Roto-Ray still spinning and I know that many- but not all- apparatus are designed to turn that and other warning lights off when it is in neutral and/or if the parking brake is set. Perhaps that is where the failure occurred. Also seemed like the first-due had minimal manpower.

Yes. It appears the first arriving Engine had a pump failure of some sort (that’s why you did not see water in the yellow hose). It’s pointless to connect to a hydrant if the pump is non-operational. The 2nd Engine was moved up (too close, IMO), the hose deployed and water discharged and on the fire in 1:45 … still too slow. I’m certain this wasn’t planned.
Same thing happened to me at a house fire, 10 years ago. 1st and 2nd Engines failed. We had to rely on the 3rd due Engine for water. It’s a pretty helpless feeling when it happens … as you know from watching this video. Too much heat for fire extinguishers to work effectively. Only water would extinguish a fire of this intensity. But, imagine if it was your car, or your crew, or your fire Engine. 40 years on the job. I know the feeling. But still, this video demonstrates the need for training.

so this was strange to me the initial truck must have had a line kink or something internally for them to have the backup /secondary pull a line out. interesting

7:50 in video there is another TH-cam video of a burning car that shows once you let it get so hot it is impossible to put out because of fluids and plastics (it is a video of a SUV in a used car lot I think in the Midwest)

He's right, by the time these guys got water to the car the only thing left burning was the plastic and material puddled inside the car

I understand a car fire is fuel and plastic not a good thing to put out with water but is was called in that way from the start / water first could have helped till proper foam carrying truck comes in

I've watched more than 200 videos of fires and firefighters' work from dozens of countries around the world, and I'm getting more and more perplexed by the work of American firefighters, without a doubt, by far, the slowest and worst firefighters in the world. It seems like a cultural pattern of behavior, because the videos show their work in different cities across the country , years apart, and it's always the same behavior. The profound incompetence, slowness and negligence of firefighters and their commanders in firefighting seems cultural. There seems to be a higher order in every Fire Department of the country that says: let's wait until the maximum amount of assets affected (cars, houses, etc.) is burned and destroyed, before we start throwing water. This is absolutely amazing. The behavior of the American firefighters is almost criminal.

I agree to a certain extent , and it seems to be the big city departments, but quite often you will find volunteer FD 's who are very quick. It just depends on the organization.

As an American firefighter with both career and volunteer service I definitely agree with you however, there are alot of departments that firefight very aggressively with tactical awareneess but it is sporadic. Overall, the US fire service has very little oversight. In my state, all you need is a pulse and they put you in fire gear and give you million $ equipment. There needs to be a nationwide standard on quality and training and turn those away who aren't up for the job...
