  • In this video Chad Hines with Willow Creek Kennels shows you how to teach "sit" to your puppy using positive reinforcement (food reward), along with a secondary reinforcer (a training clicker).
This is Step 3 in a series of puppy training basics. Although we put these videos in a sequence, you can certainly train your dog out of sequence. And it is never too late to teach an old dog new tricks!

There are a lot of schools of thought on training. Our approach is flexible and adaptable and tries not to be too restrictive into one "method" over the other. We teach and respond to how the dog learns; if one method doesn't work we try another. We like our dogs to be obedient and sit for us so we incorporate it early, but we also work on the "whoa" behavior and pointing early as well. If a dog tends to sit all the time when you are working on whoa, you just need to do more work on whoa.

We like to follow what the veterinarian recommends. There are all kinds of different thoughts and theories about when or if you should spay or neuter your dog. We don't spay are neuter many dogs at the kennel so again we would recommend what your vet thinks is best.

Any good ideas on how to keep four paws on the floor with one that is VERY insistent on jumping up? 10wks old.

ive heard other trainers saying that training "sit" is bad until the dog had been trained to whoa first. what are your thoughts on that?

"Nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so." If you think it's bad to teach sit, then it will be bad. If you think it's good, then it will be good. We like the sit behavior for obedience and steadiness from a blind so we teach it early. It's just our preference. Don't forget to work on whoa as well. Some dogs will be more inclined to point and whoa while others will need to work at it. Adapt to the dog and observe how they respond.

We use the clicker throughout the dog's training, at any age. We do not find it more difficult without a clicker after using the clicker to start training. In fact, the training has been reinforced even more and the behaviors are more consistent, even without the clicker. A lot of the clicker use can depend on convenience and other training tools you may have in your hands (it's sometimes hard to carry a clicker, a treat and work the e coller so we end up dropping the clicker).

Thanks for the feedback Brandon. We are still amateur videographers (mostly using our iPhones) so we are continually seeking ways to improve our final video. We will review the beginning and end sound on any upcoming videos. We hope you enjoy them!

Do you have any advice on getting GSPs spayed/neutered? Does getting them spayed/neutered affect their drive or distract them from natural hunting abilities?

I really enjoy your videos. We are expecting a Brittany puppy (my first versatile breed) in about 6 weeks and I want to use a lot of the positive reinforcement you demonstrate. I thought traditional lore was you didn't teach a pointing dog to 'sit' until they are much older? I'm very interested in your thoughts.
Also, do you have any recommended reading for clicker training?

These videos are great! I wish I would have discovered them 4 weeks ago when I got my 7 week old pup. Oh well, Life goes on.

love your videos, I'm getting a springer spaniel in a couple weeks and i'm new to training. hope to use your methods to get started training behaviors into her earliy. I was just wondering, since you use the clicker from such an earlier age, do the dogs depend heavily on the clicker more and more as they get older or do you not use it as much as they grow? thanks again

Hi ! just wandering is the collar training used specifically for working hunting dogs or do you use it for regular training also? I am studying your techniques in training and I am just curious to its use if not working my dog.. thanks !

The collar can be used for any kind of training. It's a form of mild negative reinforcement and when used properly can help to condition lots of behaviors, including obedience.
