    In this video we go over 2 of the biggest reasons of why we drop the back shoulder. The first reason is pulling the head out aggressively and the big muscles in the upper body take over to keep up, resulting in a dropped back shoulder.
    The most common reason is when the hitter over rotates the shoulders and torso in result burying the hands behind the body. This puts an obstacle, the body, in between the hands and the path of the ball. The results in attempting to get the body out of the way to get our hands to the ball also resulting in a dropped back shoulder.
    Then we will give you two awesome drills to knock out these problems right away and have you swinging with proper shoulder rotation in no time!
    I look forward to helping you improve your baseball in the future!

    Amazing!! Transformed my sons swing in 2 cage sessions. He is so happy now. Most of last season he was in tears. He was 10.
    He had a terrible back swing, dropped his hands, then he would load up his shoulders and he would be late or would open up his front side. Just a mess.
    Just as the instructor says this is one big fix for a lot of things. Thank you!!

    That was great! My son was the best hitter on his team last year and this year has struggled so much. I videoed him tonight and couldn't figure out what was causing him to drop that shoulder. In BP he mashes the ball but in game has really struggled. So right when I saw you turn your back I saw it. Great drills. We will work on it. I'm glad you mentioned 150 - 200 reps because most kids don't understand how much work it takes to train or re-train muscles. Thanks a lot.

      Thanks Todd! Glad the instruction is helping out!
      Good eye too on catching the turn. This can give hitters a false sense of accomplishment in BP, being as it is easy for an athlete to get into a rhythm hitting ball after ball. Yet, we all know, when we get into a game, we don't get to stand up there and hit ball after ball.
      Also refreshing to hear some understanding that it take quality and quantity repetitions to make good changes and to get them in the swing!

    Best instruction I've seen so far in my quest to learn why I'm dropping my shoulder and how to fix it. Been playing softball whole life and co-ed now for 10+ yrs (with the big boys, haha). Was always a good hitter but started with consistent problems last season and a guy said I was dropping shoulder. Will try to apply your techniques. SO frustrating when you can't get out of slump! Thx for the tips!!

    No one hits with 'level shoulders" Every good hitter tilts,you have never seen slow mo video of real hitters.Closing the shoulder creates torque against an open front hip.You are totally wrong.

      +Molly Johnson I've actually had this same comment brought up quite a few times (you can check responses below).
      Pretty much more detail on how the video is more for the "initial" dropping of the back shoulder, and that the back shoulder is lower relative to the front on a proper swing!

    when I'm at the plate I always struggle to hit. but it didn't used to be this way, we got a new hitting coach at school and he tried to change my swing and when I figured out it wasn't working for me I tried to come back to what I was originally doing when I had one of the best averages on the team and I've fixed my swing for the most part but I was told I was staying in my backside and not coming forward after I load. I think that is causing me to drop my back shoulder. this video really helped thanks.

  • @ampatau9092
    @ampatau9092 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Watch all the great hitters in MLB they drop their shoulder , have a rotational hand path and don't throw their hands straight at the ball. They also hit at an upward angle, which I have seen you previously describe as a bad thing to do. Sure don't double load, you load once with your stride and then keep everything connected during the swing..legs, hips ,shoulders and hands.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey ampatau! Thanks for the comment! You are absolutely right, all good hitters back shoulder will be lower relative to the front shoulder during the swing. This video is to help fix the dropping of the back shoulder when it is overdone resulting in a severe upper cut, or over compensated swing. As far as the angle that we hit, you should really check out the Swing Plane Video Here: th-cam.com/video/a_tJvSCvgRE/w-d-xo.html
      The video explains the physics of what actually creates the swing plane. One thing I didn't mention in that video, in order to keep from over complicating it, is that when the barrel does drop below the hand path line, the counterbalance between the barrel and the hands will level out the hand path. This shows that the initial move to the ball is straight to it from the loaded position and that the speed and momentum created by the swing is what naturally gets us into the correct positions. The video explains it pretty well!

      @cmarch2277 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct, to a point. However, there's a slight difference between a shoulder drop and a shoulder rotation -which results in a lower back shoulder. The key is to look at the torso. If the torso is relatively straight, then it's more than likely rotational lowering of the back shoulder (good). If the torso is leaning back (think bent at the ribs) then it's a back shoulder drop (bad). It's very nuanced, but accurate for improved hitting. I'm going through this right now with my young team. It's a tough habit to break.

    Thanks for this video. I've been looking all over for something to help me get my son's swing down. He's been dropping his shoulder, dragging his hands and turning his head. This is a good way for me to help him rebuild his swing and confidence. He's 9 and is becoming frustrated. I'm going to have him sit with me and watch this and your other videos and then we'll get to work. Once he feels comfortable, we'll go to a cage. We've got a small backyard so we'll use whiffle balls until he's ready for the cage.One additional question, do you guys have pitching drills videos? He throws VERY hard, but has no consistent control. His coaches love his arm, but are concerned because he's wild.How do I get him to harness his arm strength, but ensure he's got CONTROL?

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Keith Evans You are most welcome, I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful!
      Sounds like you have a great mindset for getting your son's swing better. It is crucial to get pieces right before trying to go full speed, and by implementing hitting in the back yard with wiffle balls is a great way to do that.
      It is a controlled environment where you can concentrate on correcting mechanical flaws!
      I would highly suggest checking out the free introduction videos at ProSpeedBaseball.com, they are a great place to start and diagnose issues for the entire swing.
      And yes, we do have pitching videos, we are actually in the process of putting together a whole pitching system similar to our hitting system available on the website.
      We have a great pitching series that you can check out here:
      www.prospeedbaseball.com/#!power-pitching-series/gf5hy
      I would also recommend checking out our Aroldis Chapman series we have on TH-cam.

    Hi pro speed baseball
    I've been coaching a high school team for 2 years now. Some kids have been brought up on the rotational hitting philosophy which i believe is a quite difficult philosophy to execute unless you are a phenomenal hitter with great athletic swings. Some of these kids dip constantly due to the swing patterns that they are being shown from major league hitters (parents are showing our hitters pics of rotational swings from MLB). I love the idea of throwing the hands at the bat and using solid top hand action to swing the bat and hit line drives. Do you think there can be a balance of these two ides to help kids stop dipping the back shoulder.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Grinstead Hey James, thanks for the question! If you haven't yet, I would HIGHLY recommend checking out the Swing Plane Secret video on the PSB TH-cam Channel: th-cam.com/video/a_tJvSCvgRE/w-d-xo.html
      This video goes over the physics of what actually happens to the bat in the baseball swing. I've tried to stay away for the whole Linear vs Rotational hitting philosophies because they don't make sense as far as physics go.
      Linear hitting is said to be when you go from point A to B in a straight line. If you look at it from a physics standpoint: If you swing with any kind of speed, without consciously trying to manipulate the bat, the bat head will not move on the same path of the hands. It will drop nicely and actually look like what people call rotational hitting.
      You are absolutely right when you say that only hitters who are exceptional athletes (and having a good day) can make what people call a "rotational swing" work.
      When hitters try to manipulate the bat, which you would have to do to swing "rotational", you are simply fighting against physics and making hitting much more difficult.
      The most difficult thing you will most likely have to deal with is players making bad or less than efficient swings and still getting hits, which would reassure them that they are swinging correctly even when this may not be the case.
      If you have one kid who is a great athlete, swinging wrong, and getting hits, everyone will assume that's the way you should swing. Probably the toughest part about baseball instruction right there, making bad swings and getting hits, when your players could be hitting better with a more efficient swing.
      This is a very difficult subject to explain over text, but I hope this at least helps. You most definitely sound like your on the right track as far as how you want your hitters to swing.
      If you have any other questions or would like to discuss this further don't hesitate to let me know, I would be more than happy to help out.
      Good Luck with your team! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    hey I have been swinging under the ball lately and when i do hit the ball it is always a pop up do you have any suggestions for me

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Landon Rascoe Hey Landon, thanks for the comment! First thing I would start with are the drills in this video where you really make sure the hands stay in front and in a good position. I would also suggest checking out this video:
      th-cam.com/video/a_tJvSCvgRE/w-d-xo.html
      This is a great video to help with understanding how the swing works and it gives a great swing thought with drills. The swing thought is relaxed hands to the ball (you'll see in the video) and if you couple that with good hand positioning it will greatly reduce the chance of pop ups.
      Remember to check yourself on camera or in a mirror to make sure the positions are right and understand too that the best hitters pop out regularly. Most of the time when a hitter with a good swing pops out, it's either a timing issue or a slight mishit.
      Hope this helps! If you have any further questions on this or anything else don't hesitate to let me know!
      Good Luck! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    Love your videos! Got a good drill for someone who drops their hands?? Also one for lower body or hip explosion. Thx. Kyle

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kyle Gordon Hey Kyle, Thanks for the comment and question! I actually have videos coming out on both of these subjects. The drill for dropping the hands will be an over exaggeration of opposite of dropping the hands. The drill goes like this: You start out with your hands low and raise them to about shoulder height and then swing. This would be the opposite motion of dropping your hands. You do this drill until you get comfortable with swinging from the shoulder area then you work on starting and swinging with your hands high.
      As far as the hips go, the biggest tell tale that we use our hips efficiently is the rotation of the back foot. Ideally we will have the shoe laces of our back foot pointing towards center field at the finish of the swing. Because of the relationship of the the anatomy between the foot and the hip, we can gauge how much we use our hips by our foot position. Therefore we can concentrate on firing our back foot faster and therefore use our hips much more effectively. Be on the lookout for the videos coming out for a better visual explanation, yet if you have any questions on this or anything else in the meantime, don't hesitate to let me know! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jake Davidson Great question, I'm actually considering doing a video on this very subject. First and foremost, knowing the proper load parameters is key. We have a free instructional video on the load at ProSpeedBaseball.com, that will show you just that.
      After you load, just pay attention to the relationship between how far your hands are away from your body. After you stride, you can pause and check your load again and make sure the hands are close to the same relationship.
      Main thing you don't want is a front arm that is too straight. The load parameters will go over that!
      Hope this helps out! If you have any other questions, just let us know! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    I did the drill and it worked the first couple times i took bp, but i went back to dropping my shoulder. My hands are still in front of the line but my shoulder and bat still drop. Anything else that will solve this problem?

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question! Without physically seeing your swing it'd be tough to tell what's going on.
      The hands if front of the line is one of the common reasons for the shoulder to drop too soon, however it's not the only reason.
      I'd suggest tilting your shoulders forward at setup and think about maintaining that angle as you transition your hands going to the ball. The back shoulder will be lower relative to the front shoulder as you swing through.
      Hope this helps out! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    A boy on my son's little league team does that, REALLY bad, SMS one of the coaches told him to bite his lead shoulders shirt sleeve. I have never heard that advice, and I can see many things wrong with that advice, what sre your thoughts on that?

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've actually seen this before... a long time ago actually. It all simply depends on the individual hitter. Things a little crazy like biting your shirt can possibly help... but it's simply a "band-aid" until the issue is resolved. More times than not, big swing flaws like this are caused by other issues... the best thing to do is get the big pieces of the swing in order. This usually alleviates any big problems and if it doesn't then it's good to try things out to fix it. ~ Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    Good points about over-rotating the shoulders during the load. However, that is a separate issue from dropping the shoulder, IMO. In the clip used of Miggy, his back shoulder is very tilted at contact. How do they become so tilted if he does not drop the shoulder during the swing?

      +Glenn Alexander Hey Glen, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I should have been much more clear for the intentions of this video lesson, considering I've had the same question many times.
      I'm learning from my mistakes. :P
      The intention of this video is to address the over-dropping of the back shoulder in the swing leading to an "upper cut" like swing.
      Every hitter will have the back shoulder lower relative to the lead shoulder during the swing.

      +Pro Speed Baseball Thanks. I didn't read the other comments. Sorry if redundant. You are correct, IMO, in that hitters can over-do it w/ shoulder tilt, or drop shoulder prematurely. Similarly when you say uppercut swing. Swing should be on a slight upward plane, IMO, but not excessive.

      Owen Maxwell I would highly recommend checking out the "Swing Plane Video" here: th-cam.com/video/a_tJvSCvgRE/w-d-xo.html
      It will really help with showing what should happen with the hand path and swing plane. For now I would recommend to FEEL like you are swinging slightly up for a couple of days the go to more of a swing thought of taking "relaxed hands" to the ball. (You will see in the video what I'm talking about)
      The reason you only want to FEEL like you're swing slightly up for a couple of days is to get out of overdoing the downward motion you are most likely having trouble with. Just keep in mind that the "relaxed hands to ball" in the video isn't a one thing fixes everything deal, you still need to have good all around mechanics!!
      Hope this helps!! If you have any other questions don't hesitate to let me know! Good Luck!!

      The drills in this video help with a specific issue, if you have a slightly different issue you might need to focus on other drills and positions.
      Now the drills in this video are crucial for good hitting, yet if you are still dropping, it might not be from the issues presented in this lesson.
      It sounds like you might be dropping your hands, which in turn would make your elbow drop.

    Watch any major league power hitter and their pitcher side shoulder is higher than their catcher side shoulder. Here is the caveat, their spine is a straight vertical line; it is not tilted. They raise their front shoulder by shrugging their trap muscle. This allows the use of the triceps in the swing as opposed to the rotator cuff in the swing. Watch a McCutchen video for a great example. You always swing about your spine as your upper body rotates about it. If your spine is angled by bending at the hips you will swing upward and ground out or pop up. This video will be effective once you understand this. Hope you don't think I hijacked this comment section I just hate seeing people not understand a good instructional.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lee friedman Great question! The answer is: Tons of ways. Every player is going to be a little different. Whether you take deep breaths, imagine your in a batting cage, or simply get used to it, every individual will do something different. Personally, early on the fans and fellow players cheering was nerve racking yet I learned to love it and feed off of it.
      I will give you one quick trick you can us though, ear plugs. Not the best thing in the world if you need to hear your base coaches, yet they will definitely help you "tune" out the fans. You can try using them at first until you eventually get comfortable playing in front of a crowd.

    The reason golfers turn their shoulders to 'behind' the ball is because they swing with a straight front arm and need to release the club at a point on the ground forming a line from the front shoulder, thru the hands, thru the club to the ball.
    I don't know any MLB player that keeps his hands in front of his toes. This drill helps in your flawed technique of hands to the ball... a linear approach to hitting which good hitters abandon once they figure out it doesn't work when the pitching gets better. This is usually around 12 yrs old. The reason the back shoulder needs to drop is to keep the shoulders on-plane... pointed at the anticipated hitting zone. The bat needs to stay on-plane, also. In your video insert @4:35-37 you see the hitter on-plane... shoulders tilted to match the plane of the bat... left arm and elbow rising to keep the bat on-plane AND the bat path ASCENDING... that mean RISING to match the descending pitch. This is not an upper cut swing. Read Ted Williams book. Check out what Barry Bonds says. Watch dozens of MLB swings. The pro swing path goes thru the hitting zone anywhere from +5 degrees to +15 degrees. PSB, get a Zepp or Easton sensor and check your launch angles. You're negative from swinging down, thinking you are cutting the ball for backspin. False, false and more false. Check the Zepp promo video of Mike Trout.
    You guys are so invested in the old A to B T-ball swing that you can't even see the truth in the very video you inserted!!!!
    When you see a hitting guru swing down and his arms straighten out, elbows pinching together.... RUN AWAY!!

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Telkev, thanks for the comment! I'd higly recommend checking out the Swing Plane videos on the PSB Channel. They go over the physics of what happens to the bat when the hand path is directly to the ball.
      Swing Plane Secret
      Swing Plane Secret Revisited
      Take Your Hands to the Fricken Ball
      There is a counterbalance-type action that happens that gives the bat the positive direction. Pretty cool stuff.
      Also the shoulder drop mentioned in this video is for the initial dropping of the shoulder, not the through swing. Every hitter's back shoulder will be lower in relationship to the lead shoulder on the through swing!

    I'm not sure why people say you're not suppose to drop your back shoulder when hitting. You have to drop the back shoulder to hit a ball below the shoulders. It's impossible to keep your shoulders level and hit anything but a ball that's level with or above the shoulders.
    And the evidence is in your video when you dropped your back shoulder to hit the ball off the T.

      To be perfectly honest, I have no idea what your coach means. haha! I would firstly suggest asking him specifically what that means.

Then you show a video of Miggy turning his shoulders, dropping the back shoulder, and hitting the junk out of the ball. So why shouldn't we do it? Hey Marcus, thanks for the question!
      Drill work is all based on the individual's needs. The drills in this video may be drills you do your entire career and they may be drills you do until you get the issue resolved.
      Simply depends.
      The trick is to first, understand proper technique, then know what needs to be worked on to achieve that technique.
      If that's this drill and you get it going good, then maybe you stop doing it and the issue returns, simply keep doing the drill!
      Looks like I turned an easy question into a hard one! :)

    lmaoooo dude the video you showed with miggy even HE is dropping his back shoulder. in fact the "uppercut" swing you show in the first 15 seconds of this video is actually where elite players make contact and how they approach the ball. the other 9 minutes is total crap.

  • @arniereyher6909
    @arniereyher6909 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think the shoulder tilt is an illusion. They have to in order to get proper bat path to ball. Also hands dont drop to the ball the barrel is controlled by side bend to get to lower pitches. The arc is on plane deep in swing going up to the ball With back elbow on hip slight bend in front elbow maintaining a good hitters bucket extending after ball contact. The issue is in wt shift to front side rotating only on the front leg releasing back side. When wt is not transferred to front and kept on back side then that changes the angle of swing to the so called upper cut and acts like an anchor to the full turn.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be anatomically very hard to swing with any speed without the back shoulder getting lower to the lead shoulder... So there's nothing wrong for the shoulders to create this angle... The mix up here is that I wasn't as detailed in my earlier videos on exactly what I was explaining... This video is essentially for hitters who lean back (aka drop backs shoulder) before the swing initiates.
      Miguel Cabrera is a great example of NOT doing this... if you take a look at his swing from face on, before his hands begin forward momentum his shoulders are tilted down, then when the swing initiates (forward hand momentum) the back shoulder begins to work under the lead shoulder. ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    Up until now, I have agreed with a lot of your videos, but this one is ridiculous. You obviously don't pay attention to professional hitters. If the hitter has an athletic posture, unlike the one you are displaying, the shoulder will automatically drop that is caused by the spine angle tilt at the launch or stride position. Also, the hitter does not need to get his front shoulder facing the first base coach to get power from his shoulders, but merely slightly down and to the 2nd baseman. Stop over exaggerating these movements and pay more attention to the top hitters in the game. There are huge shoulder angles at impact. I am a full time instructor and have been coaching for over 30 years, and you my friend are lost....

    This is bad technique. You are supposed to get on plane with early. You are swiping like you are putting on a seatbelt. Your shoulder is supposed to drop so that you can get on plane with the ball

      Karie Miller Hey Karie! I have had a quite a few similar comments (below) on this video. Wishing now that I was more clear in the intro :P
      You are absolutely right that the back shoulder will be lower relative to the front shoulder throughout the swing. This video is more for when this move is severely overdone, especially at the start of the swing, resulting in an excessive upper cut.
      If you ever have any questions or if there's anything I can help out
      with don't hesitate to let me know!!

    This really makes no sense at all. I am not trying to be rude, but have you ever watched MLB or elite players swing a baseball bat? The back shoulder must drop, dip, or tilt if you prefer, in order to hit pitches lower than our shoulders. So, go back and watch your video here and then the video of Miggy and you will see that BOTH, you and Miggy's shoulders drop, dip, or as I prefer to say, tilt. Your description here just doesn't make sense or stay in with you what you really do. Have you ever heard the question; "Do we teach what we really see?" Google it...It's a question a very smart hitting instructor asked 20 years ago...someone who played and tutored under Ted Williams. Good luck. I suppose if you are teaching a linear type of swing then I guess it is okay...???

      Pro Speed Baseball That would make better sense. If I may offer a tip; look for the position of the front shoulder at heel plant. If the front shoulder is tilted up at heel plant you can certainly have issues with bat path and bat drag. Also, when the player/hitter starts pushing his hands away form his body/behind his shoulder during his stride or weight shift, as opposed to turning his hands with his shoulders, and then having the inside part of his top hand pointing skyward which causes the barrel to point more towards the ground, this is definitely a cause for extreme uppercutting and at times roll over ground balls. Good luck!

      Pro Speed Baseball what would you say is a severly over done way of doing it

      I don't understand your question...a severely way of over doing what? Dropping your back shoulder? If you are referring to a player popping the ball up or undercutting the ball, I find it is the barrel of the bat being dropped below the plane of the pitch and then dragging the bat up undercutting the ball, or by dropping the hands too far the below the shoulder line and using poor technique...such as starting the swing with the upper body and allowing the top hand to flatten out too early.

      The Baseball Barn The guy from The Baseball Barn is right. People need to start using the magic of slow motion video. Somehow, somewhere, somebody said "stay back, don't deep your back shoulder and swing down" this teaching spread like a virus and contaminated youth baseball players, parents and coaches. Follow Baseball Barn, Mike Epstein and Baseball Rebellion if you want to learn how to swing the bat.
      Swinging down at the ball will only work until pitching get good and that second and shortstop becomes a beast.
