  • In this video I discuss the importance of and how to use your hands properly in the swing! So much info out there about turning to contact; and while that is true in a sense we can not lose sight of how important our hands are in the swing!!

I agree about the hands there are top hand hitters and pull thru or bottom hand hitters now this is one thing that really well for me today. But before l get into that there is a golf guy John Schelee who has videos out on what he calls the power plane and the make up of the hands first of all l noticed for myself top hand hitter elbow up l get my hands in what l call the Hogan twist there is a video on that. So l imagine a golf backswing plane and l imagine a paddle on my bat that is riding that plane ok l got the bat on my shoulder the paddle is on the backswing plane l want to get into the shaft plane in golf or bat plane or better yet a good position to hit when my top hand starts this move DOWN but curved like the Nike swish tilted l do this with the heel of my right and my elbow goes toward the pitcher l want to feel and be committed to going thru the hitting zone with the paddle fully exposed that means a slight up swing and l am controlling this with the heel of my hand staying in Ted Williams hitting zone. Ok l feel l can control my palm up position and a slightly tilted upswing feels great when it works right my pain in the ass machine gives me about 2 ideal pitches to hit per year so it's hard for baseball players to walk around imaging a glass plane over their neck l struggled with it today. I load my hip and all no stride swing a little de weight an a setting back down for me l don't think of how my hips work but when l was 16 my dad who was working for the Giants as a scout would soft toss me and say that's how the hips work one college age guy asked me how l did it l said l don't know but look at a guy like Mike Piazza not good hit movements but his hands. Later on my dad had to make a speech behind Rod Carew the first thing Carew did was hold his hands up and say l hit with these he was a stroker elbow down he might have pulled the knob but anyway l went out and got in his position one day just stroking baby and l was like 9 for 9 elbow up more power l never think of the kno theb cause l like to swing

My man, I know you tried to be descriptive but I can’t understand any of this. Would like a break down of the hips though.

For a player that comes off his shoulder too early- and has been using his arms/hands too much… I have been working with him on getting him to use his legs/body and on getting reconnected almost exclusively- but what’s your recommendation? Should we incorporate this now or wait until he’s a little more solid with his sequence, rotation and staying more connected?

When are you coming back to So-Cal? My son watches your content and would like to attend a hitting camp.

What is your take on the Camwood system? Their All American 30 day program teaches inside the ball and is primarily learning bat path via the hands.

I’m a fan in doses! The top hand strength and knob control elements are GREAT! But… if it’s too much for the player strength wise, it can cause big problems

how do you explain to very young kid where to position himself inside the box ? I was taught to put my back foot close to the plate then stick my front foot right behind the other and then position myself at that distance more or less. is it a good distance ?

Too each their own! I like to start with my stride getting my front foot even with the front of homeplate; easy reference point for consistency
