The other contenders in the mix to become F1's newest team

  • The prospect of the Formula 1 grid getting bigger in the near future seems excitingly realistic and there are more contenders to land a new entry than you might think.
    Andretti’s grand announcement of its tie-up with General Motors and Cadillac was a head-turning, public declaration of intent, ahead of the FIA formally opening the process to evaluate potential new entries.
    That was met with a swift message from F1 that a number of conversations are taking place, indicating there are multiple contenders and some are just conducting their business in private
    This was interpreted by some as the latest tit-for-tat in a long stand-off between F1 and Andretti. But it seems to be rooted in fact because the options to be F1’s next new team do look plentiful.
    We’ve already focused on Andretti and Cadillac. Now it’s time to assess that project’s competition for an extra slot on the grid.

    We could easily have two more teams from compelling outfits. This isn't 2010, these groups are from worldwide organisations with notable motorsporting credentials. Any posturing from the teams is only going to cause fan backlash, which is NOT something that FOM wants after embracing the fandom.

      Mercedes is one of Aston Martin's (road car company) biggest share holders (20%, according to Reuters). Mercedes AMG engines power the road cars. AMR GP is an independent company of Aston Martin (AFAIK fully owned by Lawrence Stroll personally), so they can do whatever they want but Mercedes may want to have a word whether AMR GP would be allowed to continue to use the Aston Martin branding.

In his brief stint driving for Mclaren he was as much fired for refusing to put in enough effort to his job and concocting theories the team was deliberately sabotaging him as he was chronically underperforming. (Counting for the races he missed Senna outscored him 6 points to every 1 and over the season total it was 10 to 1 and Andretti crashed out of the first four races in succession.) One possible step would be addition by subtraction. Gene Haas has made it clear by his actions that he doesn't have the resources to support a competitive team. Having him sell Haas to a better funded entrant would improve the field. As an American, I'd like him to sell it to an American-owned team (one that would actually hire an American driver or two), but as a long-time F1 fan (since the days of Jim Clark) I just want to see another strong team in the field.

Limit the amount of people that work on the car. @@KewaNCow That wouldn’t work in the modern day. The cost for one team is to great just to enter once. And it wouldn’t bring any value to F1

      22 is already too much, sponsors dont want be on the back on the grid, so if is too big number we always will have teams struggling for some seasons and then leaving F1
      I would prefer substitions or partnerships to not relevant performer teams;
      Porsche > Alpha Tauri
      Ford + Wiliams
      Andretti > Haas

      @@KewaNCow nope. We want 60+ cars on track much like IMSA do in 2014.

    Strike while the iron is hot F1! More popularity than the sport has ever had globally, so why not bring in more teams, drivers, and therefore more publicity. It just makes sense.

    My 2 cents... a reform of WEC to something more sprint and a single class could be a good thing to receive investments from people that can't get into F1. A monster ground effect (spec on this part + max lift to drag aero regulation), good looking car could surf in this hype and try to grow into something more popular. Maybe some spec hybrid with 500hp to fit combustion engines around this 500hp as well could keep costs reasonable (BoP and homologations as part of this so people don't need to build new cars every year). Keep as endurance race only Le Mans 24.
