I used nikon d7200 and d750.
D7200 much better in low light autofocusing.
D750 is the best in any kind of photography compare to z5.
i think entry level z5 should be compared with entry leval nikon d3500.
@@c.bwijesinghe2259 the d3500 is a great camera but cannot compare to the z5 or z50 in my opinion, I’ve been getting FANTASTIC color and quality out of both and they both have WAY outdone my expectations 10 fold

I would love to hear why other than both being considered or labeled as entry level cameras in their respective categories. My mind is blown.
@@c.bwijesinghe2259 The Z5 has IBIS which the the D750 doesn’t . Also it has way better video and the AF points have a better spread . Lastly the Z5 will not need to have its lenses calibrated like the D750 will .
@@c.bwijesinghe2259 The Z5 is a better camera than any of the DSLRs you mentioned . It has IBIS , a better AF spread , and extremely better video performance . I like the D750, and had one but it’s a bit long in the tooth .
I got the Z6 about 6 months after its release. It came with the 24-70 f/4 S. Seven days later, I knew mirrorless was the way to go.
So I started dumping 30 years worth of Nikon F's and started buying Z primes. I purchased the Z6ii (with the Z70-200 f/2.8 S) when it came out and kept the original 6 as a back-up.
I've watched every Z5 TH-cam video (including the Rockwell video where he keeps telling everybody to dump Nikon and buy Canon) so BestBuy put it on sale and I went to get it.
When I got to BestBuy, I met some teens bragging about their Z5s, but what they really wanted was the Z6.
They saved me $1,000. I realized, I already had one home. I went home and dusted my original 6 off the shelf and it is now my daily carry.

Best intros in the biz my friend. And some excellent knife wielding skills! Both look like wonderful cameras, not sure you can go wrong in this day and age. I started out on Nikon's before switching to Sony but if I had to go back, Nikon would certainly be my choice. Great review and comparison. Hope all is well down there with you and the fam!
Awww you’re too kind mate. Thank you. I love me a good intro lol yeah they’re both really good cameras! You can’t go wrong I don’t think. I was always tempted toward Sony but had so much Nikon glass it made sense to stick with it and I’m glad I have.

As a Nikon DSLR owner and photographer I’ve had my eye on the Z5 for a while now and this video and sealed the decision and choice I had made - always thought the Z5 was a good buy - I wont use it for video - so this is the one for me ! Great review Ralph I’ve never used Nikon but they both seem like really good cameras. For the price difference the gap isn’t as big as you would think. Great stuff sir I hope all is well

Never been happier than I have since switching to Nikon and specifically the Z5. I use a pair of them professionally for weddings (rent a 3rd) and my workflow has gotten so much easier. Just love the files.
Do you have any issues with subject tracking and low light focusing?
@@IvaPunisher I don't use subject tracking a ton. I do use the wide eye auto focus when subjects are close, but honestly I have no issue just using the joystick to put the focal point wherever I want it. Never had an issue with that being fast enough. ( I continuous focus most of the time) Subject tracking for me and weddings would not be my favorite as it might grab the body and I want the head etc. Low light I haven't had any issues. Most receptions are good enough, but I have been in near totally dark situations shooting at 5000 ISO. I think the camera has no issues as long as you're exposing correct (because it sees plenty of light). When using a flash in a very dark situation, maybe once I had an issue briefly.

Z6ii is the way to go! also, try to get as many of the Z primes you can afford. A lot better than (FTZ) adapting the older F glass.

Handshake: great review, Mate, some good information. I am waffling between a couple of cameras; the Z 5 was looking OK. However, (always one of those) I need to do Video and Photos. So now think I am leaning for the M-50. I watched your video on what camera you should get, which was helpful.

Thanks heaps Bob. Even the M50 crops their 4K too. Perhaps not as severely though. The M50 isn’t a full frame also. I have the M50 and don’t enjoy shooting still on it. It’s not very heavy and the feel is a little... unsatisfying?? Anyway there’s a couple of extra thoughts to throw in the mix. Stoked to here the cap came through. Nice!! Yet the Born To Create does come in gray 👍 you select it when you find the hat and have to choose a style :)

Thanks so much Craig. It has 45.7 mega pixel which gives you the freedoms to crop in. People who work on behalf of Nikon have told me if that’s what you need them go for it but for video the Z6 is the way to go. What has your research revealed?
Finally got the Z5 with that tiny little kit lens. My first ever foray into full frames, jumping from that entry level APS-C Canon I've been using for years.....so far I have been astonished with the quality of the photos, especially so as this is the quality from a kit lens, not even from an 'S' lens. With IBIS and weather proofing and practically the same magnesium build and button layout without skimping on any single button from the Z6/7, this camera is a bargain!

@@ndevvarma I really like it. I’ve used it for real estate, portrait, corporate, landscape and product photography and it’s wonderful. Focussing in very low light is a struggle but if you don’t need video or a high FPS rate the Z5 is what you’re looking for and the 24-70 f4 is a fabulous lense too.

I can use my z50 for any video work and faster paced action shots with birds and such but if the z5 I just as good if not better in every other aspect for still nature shots and wildlife shot and portraits then I’ll be head over heals in love with Nikon all over again!
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I’m watching a video that has some animal pictures shot on a z50 and a r6 and to me, the z50 blows the R6 out of the water with each picture. Maybe I’m a Nikon fanboy lol but there is a reason for it

@@RalphMayhewPhotography finally got the lens and z5 in and I can say that the lens disappointed me at first, it a older f mount that uses the screw autofocus but once you get used to it then it has FANTASTIC subject separation. The z5 hold incredible image color and quality like the z50. Overall I’m completely in love with it!
Thanks for taking the time in answering my questions. As always a Nikon shooter D40,D80,D200,D90 to present D500. Great camera but dread taking about sometimes being an old fart with bum ticker. So thinking Z5 + FTZ adapter with my current lenes which are Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2,Tamron 100-400 f4-f5.6,Sigma 17-50 f2.8,Sigma 105 f2.8 macro. And couple of primes.
Thinking of keeping the smaller lighter lenses but sell off the bigger heavier zooms to finance equivelent smaller lighter z mount zooms like the 28-200 f4-f5.6 as a good walkabout setup for me without the weight grinding me into the dirt.
As close by pro photo shop has it on sale for $999 US. And sorely tempted to shoot over there and snatch one!

@@RalphMayhewPhotography Yep keeping my D500 for those action,wildlife events. But many of my walkabouts are not about that. Can still stash the D500 body in the pack when the need arises.
And really happy as picked it up with the FTZ adapter for $1100 total.

I love my Z5. Haven't had a chance to try night time football with it. Daytime football is AWESOME with it. I've been doing Football with my D700, and was doing weddings and portraits with the D3500. Dropped my D3500 in a waterfall when tripod fell over, and stepped up to the Z factory. Colors, feel of the camera, dual card slots, I love it!

Hey Ralph, love your style dude! So, I've been using my Nikon D5200 for a long time and it's been mostly good. Had to shoot a video for a vocal audition just recently and it was obvious my aging Nikon is just not up to the job!! :( I may need to do a bit more work like this, just as an amature, (although a few dollars would be nice right?!) but will really need a better camera to give half-way decent results. Will be using my current AF-S lenses - 16-85mm, f5.6, 70 - 300, f5.6 and 50mm, f1.8. Also involved with a new bar in Brisbane and will be doing some pics and video of bands when I'm not actively on the mixing desk. I was pretty sure the Z6 is where I should be looking and your work has confirmed it. The Z5 isn't horrible though....
That sounds like some exciting work. I’d favour the z6 in your situation I reckon. 👍 and obviously get one that includes an FTZ.
What a great review/comparison! You surely know that now the z5 retails for about 1k USD. I bought it for even cheaper here in the UAE because those suckers in the US add some stupid dodgy taxes to the final price (thanks Amazon). Great review ! As of watching I'm torn with choosing either XT-3 or Nikon Z5, I came from a canon platform been using 6D for events for 2 years and now I want to try mirrorless, I did a lot of research on XT-3 and Z5, both cameras I love but the XT-3 has more fps for sports shooting and also for a lower price which I want but does not have Ibis on the other hand z5 has ibis which I want also but for a tad higher price, I do mainly travel photo, street, events, and sports shooting. I wanna hear your thoughts about this to help me clear my mind and choose which one I should get or what would you recommend for me :)
G'day Enzo, thanks for your comment mate. From what you've said it seems as though you're leaning toward the XT-3, but are nervous about not having IBIS. Would that be right? If so, in your position, I think I'd lean toward the XT-3. The cameras are on par with each other, which means the lower price gives more cash for lenses. that assumes you don't have any glass for either. If you have glass for either I'd buy the body to suit the glass. I think you'll enjoy the XT-3's 11 fps and higher MP count (if my research is correct). does that help? Happy to chat further.
Thanks for the comment, and yup I'm somewhat afraid for not having ibis but based on what you said I'm 80% sure I'm gonna get the X-T3 for the price range and the specs that I want , and maybe I don't need ibis that much with shooting stills, maybe after a few months of having the X T3 I'll decide if I'll stay or upgrde straight to z5...anyways thank you for responding, and keep up the good work!
@@EnzoGe. bro get the Z5. "Full frame goodness"-image quality and better in low light, IBIS, weather sealed etc. Fuji has very expensive lenses not that much third party lens.
I've been using Fuji XE-4 and Z5. That's my experience
I think the 2 main differences in favor of the Nikon Z5 are a big deal to me: full-frame vs aps-c sensor that means more dynamic range, cleaner files at high ISO, sharper pictures even with 24 Mpx because it’s full frame you would need like a 45 Mpx APS-C to get the same sharpness assuming same tech sensors.
IBIS vs No IBIS could be a big deal as well. Primes like the 85mm and all non stabilized semi-telephotos and telephotos are going to suffer the most when handheld without IBIS. Same for video.
And finally lenses, that’s easier to compare, what lenses you want? go check prizes and compare them. For example the Fuji 56mm f1.2 would be equivalent to the Nikon Z 85mm f1.8
The Fuji advantages could be also a big deal to you, the 11 vs 4.5 would depending on what you shoot more often. I use 5 fps 99% of the time having the option of 14 FPS on a Z6 II

Just bought a Z5 myself. My first FX, first mirrorless, first without a built-in flash, and I'm determined to dive head-first into Manual mode on it. (I was always in Aperture Priority before.) Lots of firsts, and I'm looking forward to all of it.

Very important note on the Z5 and the SD cards: Make sure you get the right kind! UHS-III cards will not work. Make sure you get UHS-II compatible cards.

Waiting for the z5 to go back on sale. It's sitting close to 1300 now days. Does the z5 always have that lcd static in low light ?
Yeah it’s super rich. I’m about to make a vid on which one to choose in 2022 out of the Z5,6,6ii. Yes it always does have the lcd static.
I currently use the Z5 as I'm switching from the D750 for wedding, love the files and images. Thinking of getting a Z6 after I get rid of my D750 in the next couple of weeks, but the single card slot keeps pushing me back to the Z5. Don't know just yet because I'm kind of a hybrid shooter so I have to weigh which is more important full sensor 4k or the safety of dual card slots for weddings.
Well the XQD cards are super reliable but also super expensive and a challenge when transferring your images as you need a special reader. But they are quicker and more durable 🤷🏼♂️
Do you experience slow focus acquisition on your Z5 especially in lowlight ?? From my experience the Z5 hunts a little more in lowlight than the Z6 ..

The used prices on the 5. 6. 6ii and 7 are all within about $400. I’m starting to get into night scape, Milky Way with the goal to do a Holy Grail, day to night with the Milky Way.

Hi Daniel, you’d be moving from an APSC crop sensor to a full frame and from 20MP to 24MP so it is more than likely you’ll find your images are better quality especially in low light and giving you more cropping ability.

I understand from hearing others talk about there F- mount glass there is a bit of some focusing issues .. but still will work... just the Z lenses nail the focusing more often..better across the frame as well.
I’ve not had any issues with f mount lenses. Maybe the recent firmware update helped.
Have a nikon d3500 but thinking of full frame mirrorless and z5 fits my budget.
If you're thinking of one, it's a really great entry level camera to start with. I hope this review helped :)

Other than frame rate I don't see the cost difference between the Z5 and Z6 - Dual card slots are nice. Losing the top LCD display is not a deal breaker. I think I'll be looking seriously at the Z5!

I've seen and read reviews regarding the Z6 acquires focus faster than the Z5 regardless having the same AF systems .. They say the Z5 tends to hunt more when shooting in low light mainly due to the Z6's BSI sensor having a faster readout than the Z5's CMOS sensor .. Is this by anyway true ?? Did you experience something like this in your reviews ??

@@dezaremos5944 oh I see what you mean. Which is quickest auto focus with new firmware. I just pulled them both out next to each other and the z6 is a comfortable winner in low light. I’m bright daylight you can’t tell them apart. Hope that helps 👍

speaking about Z5 & Z50 which one is better for video?
Great question. I haven’t ever used a z50 BUT my research indicates that 4K footage on the Z5 crops the full frame sensor by 1.7, meaning it looks the same as the Z50 which is an APS-C sensor. If shooting in 1080p the Z5 uses all of the full frame sensor which means it’s better in low light with more bokeh, BUT it only shoots 60fps. While the Z50 can shoot 120fps (twice as slow-motion). Plus the Z50 has a flip down screen for vlogging and is lighter. Not sure what videoing you need it for but I hope this little summary helps you out :)
Oh and I forgot one more thing. The z50 doesn’t have IBIS (in body image stabilisation) so to shoot handheld will leave your footage more shaky than with the z5.

So focusing in the low light is better on the z6? low light, it's when iso 3200 and hand holding, not astro :)
Yep it’s so much easier because the displays are so noisy in low light on the Z5. Not impossible though 👍

Back Illuminated sensor main advantage is in faster read and clean the charge from sensor which makes it capable of much more FPS and video features. Low light and noise is not real advantage of that sensor. As you have seen by yourself.
Wow. You’re way more helpful than all of the research I did. Makes sense why the Z6 has the BSI sensor. Also strange that so many think it has lots to do with noise and low light. Thanks very much for putting it in the comments 👍 creating a pool of knowledge for everyone to benefit.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography One may argue why Z50 also non BIS sensor has better fps. It is because it is dimensional smaller sensor, so it can read faster. I have Sony A6000 (apsc) which is 11fps and A7II which FF can go up to 5fps.
That is why Z5 can do 4K at cropped size... So real dimensions here plays same role.

Ah mate, that’s lovely of you to say. Thank you. I’ll have to give Mat Irwin a look. With Astro, infinity is as far as the lens goes but it’s often just a fraction before then that the focus stays clear. Meaning that infinity isn’t actually infinity, it’s the blurry point just beyond the furthest point from your camera you can focus on. A solution, which can work, but not reliably is to focus on a far away subject during the day and keep that focus setting into the night. But it’s sometimes not accurate and requires you not to bump the focus ring even a mm - which is next to impossible.

My further research says that the Z5 should help even in the dark. If you were shooting high action then you’d want the higher FPS, but the Z5 should be more than adequate. 👍

Great review of the Nikon Z5! thanks for publishing it. I have done many years of amature photography shooting with a Cannon EOS 60D which is a cropped frame mirrored camera. Overall I like the Z5. Last summer I was given a Z5 and had the opportunity to give early feedback on it. I found it harder to reproduce accurate colors compared to my old EOS 60D and the dynamic range seemed not as good as the 60D, but it was a apples and oranges comparison with two completely different cameras. I know you said it is not a good video camera and yes I have had some troubles with focus in video mode such as some focus oscillation seems I need to power cycle the camera to make happy again. And it does not do 4k well seeing that it is cropped and max 30fps. If your happy with 1080p video I think it does a pretty darn good job, most all my TH-cam videos are shot with this camera in 1080p@60fps if not this then by the DJI Osmo Action Camera.
Nikon did release a new firmware update a couple weeks ago for Z5 on 04/26/2021 v1.10 which fixes some focus issues. I jumped on the new firmware and so far no focus oscillation issues. One other thing (let me know if you see this, I'm really curious) if you leave a charged battery in the camera and the camera is off if you go to use the camera a couple days later the battery will be completely drained. I did find some generic batteries on Amazon that are a good price and work with out the Nikon Z5 complaining.
I have been using a 20,000 mah power pack plugged into the USB C port but so far when using video mode anyway it can't keep up but does extend the shooting time. I just got a high output power pack that can power a laptop via the USB C PD port, I am going to give that a try and see if I can get longer shooting times.
What do you think of the Nikkor 24-200mm Z lens? I have it in my shopping cart for months now but $800 is a pretty large bill for an amature like me.

I’ve not used the 24-200 s lens. Would love a go with it but having f-mount glass and the new lens range being really expensive I couldn’t afford it at this stage. I imagine it’s f/4?
I have the 24-70 f/4 and the 50mm f/1.8 of the S range. Both of which I love.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography The flat battery issue I see is with the original battery, at least on mine you will notice if you have the camera switch to off and a battery installed with no SD card inserted then when you go to insert a SD card a great light will turn on for a second or 2 just right of the "i" button so camera is not 100% off when switched off. I just put in a fully charged battery and will check it tomorrow see if it does the same thing with this new firmware.
...One thing I have to get use to is mirrorless cameras do drain the battery a lot faster then the mirrored ones.
The lens I was looking at is the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR Lens for $796 at B&H photo. My camera package came with the 24-50mm which I don't like so much. My Cannon EOS 60D I have a 18-135mm F3.5 which was an awesome general purpose lens and has great macro and good telephoto ability. I really want to get that ability I had lost when I started using the Nikon Z5 over my 60D.
No loss in battery over night, maybe last weeks firmware update fixed my issue! I'll be glad if it does, I was getting use to pulling the battery out after every shoot.
Great review!.. ..but please don't discourage your viewers like just about every other reviewer does.. You DO NOT need 12/fps to shoot wildlife nor sports.
I burned over 10,000 rolls through my T90 back in the day, also only shot 4.5/fps, with dozens of images published. Good wildlife and sports photography is 90% learning your subject, and the other 10% is learning where to stand. FPS isn't part of the equation unless your praying.
I am loving my Z5. The EVF is sharp enough to manual focus (because I'm use to it, thats why), the AF is fantastic, and image quality is amazing.
That’s a great call Scott. Since making this video I’ve gone and given the FPS rate a good testing in regard to wildlife photography. I’d bracket everything you say except what’s missed is those minute moments in gestures that wildlife do, that 12fps captures and 5fps doesn’t. Like when a bird flicks a fish into its mouth. You have more choice of the perfect image. But you’re right, the FPS doesn’t mean you can’t take incredible wildlife shots. I would tell someone though, if that’s the main thing they are shooting most of the time, then 12fps would serve them better.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I agree, however you shouldn't go out into the field hoping to get that 'shot' on the first bird you see and then pack up. Not to mention its digital, so if you have to take pics of ten birds feeding no big deal. I can't count the number of times I thought I got the shot I was looking for, and then two or three rolls later get a better one. Digital makes it so easy to shoot 500 shots, lol. Personally I don't want to go through 500 hundred images looking for a quarter of an inch. If I were doing that professionally it would be different, but this isn't a professional targeted camera. At the entry level I believe lower fps results in learning your subject quicker because you have to anticipate that moment. If one finds they would rather sift 1000 images, then its time to upgrade I guess.

Now that it is 2023, the Z5 is a great camera if your budget is the main concern. If a person has a bit more money to invest, the Z6ii is an upgrade option over the Z6 and the Z5, due to its dual processor and better AF in video over the Z5 (the AF tracking in video is the main reason to need a Z6ii, not so much the photo quality). "Wide Area AF with eye detect" locks on very good in action video to subject in Z6ii and a person can use both SD cards and CFexpress B cards which have now come down a lot in cost ($99 for 64GB, or $120 for 256GB CFexpress B at B&H Photo online). The cost savings of SD cards make the Z6 not a good savings on the body, as it only uses CFexpress B or QXD. Z6ii or Z5 are both the way to go now based on your budget. I have Z5, but might upgrade to Z6ii for better AF tracking in action video. If your video is not moving much, the Z5 tracks it well enough, including simple tracking for vlogging. Add a 5 inch monitor for front facing vlogging in studio.
If you can afford you should go the Z6ii for sure 👍
Didn't they update the Autofocus issues on the Z6 with the firmware update 3.40?
They’ve tried a couple of times but it’s as good as it’s going to get which isn’t great. :(

Like other Nikon cameras, the Z5 can record NEF.RAW files with 12 or 14 bit depth, either compressed or with lossless compression. Uncompressed recording is not available. RAW+JPEG pairs can be recorded with fine, normal or basic compression. Raw files are slightly smaller than their equivalents in the Z6 but JPEGs are slightly larger.
What are you after from the comparison?

I have a Z5 and so far am unconvinced. It appears to randomly overexpose by about 3 stops and I have to switch it off to get it back to normal. The animal-eye autofocus also loses focus on a static animal. Subject to what the camera shop thinks, it might be going back to Nikon. I’ve used a D50, D90, D7100, D7500 and D610 since 2006, so I am used to Nikon cameras. I didn’t expect much of it as an action camera, but thought it would impress in other situations. So far, I’m very glad that I didn’t part with my D7500.

My thoughts regarding term "entry level camera". I don't think this is such camera at all. It has quite a few advanced features.
I wish to bold features already mentioned in this review and couple more:
1. two card slots (means not much to me but seems it is important to others. Anyhow 2-slots don't belong to "entry" category while Z6 and Z7 don't have that)
2. Powering and charging camera over external source: adapter, accubank, PC or Notebook. Personally I tried with PC over USB3 and MacBookAir M1 adapter which is full USB-c power delivery capable. Doesn't work from MacBookAir itself. Again, Z6 and Z7 doesn't have that , Z5, Z6II and Z7II have.
3. WB setting in kelvins, kind of standard today, but not every camera has that.
4. Installed applications: Timelaps, Interval meter, Focus stacking (Those are amazing adds)
5. Extremely well noise control. Directly in camera but also manageable in post.
6. Almost silent shutter.
7. Sealing
8. .... probably has more. I didn't discover yet.
On cheaper side:
1. Less metal in body
2. No top LCD (Besides two full capable displays, I don't know why one need top LCD. None Sony 7 or 9 has that. Top LCD was necessary for SLRs and later for DSLRs. )
3. Cheaper sensor, so lower fps and video capabilities.
4. Cheaper SD cards (if one not decide to buy expensive ones :) )
Your points are valid and insightful Drazen and you put a lot of thought into it. Thanks. My comment about being an entry level camera is that it’s the obvious and cheapest quality choice if you are looking for a full frame Mirrorless Nikon camera. If you aren’t then there are dozens if not hundreds of entry level options available. But if you are I think this is it.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography it is not you only. Even Nikon at their official videos calling that "entry". That is in other hand correct but it sounds like something cheap. Which is not. Canon RP is cheaper in price but can't compete in quality and low light.
I would add to the list: full functional touch screen, focus joystick and excellent viewfinder. I am working with manual lenses only and that is extremly important.
That’s a mighty fine list you’ve got there. They could produce a top quality low tech entry level for a very competitive price. I realise it’s very unlikely. I would have thought they should have done it back when the Sony a6000 came out. I had that camera for a while - it’s how I first got into mirrorless. Great camera.
I mainly shoot 1080p for social media - my D750 has nice HD - Im hoping the Z5 is equal to that

@@RalphMayhewPhotography Im getting feedback from Nikon social media groups that say the Z6II is better in lowlight and tracking for AF.
I do shoot people on stages but they are usually well lit, as for tracking - my usual need is just to obtain a focus point or plane - it would be handy to track someone walking but Id probably be walking in front or behind with a set distance between me and the subject. So Im thinking practically I should be OK.
@@markshirley01 the Z6ii would be better for sure but only marginally as the sensor and chip aren’t the new ones in the z9.
I'd love to hear about some of the specific settings you settled in on for the Z5 in the configuration menus. I'm really curious about the Dynamic range between the Z5 and Z6 do you find yourself using the little black/white with the (+/-) button to adjust metering more often on the Z5 compared to the Z6?

@@RalphMayhewPhotography Mostly I just shoot in P-Mode, I'm just looking for quick ways to adjust for odd lighting conditions like taking pictures of darker objects outside in the sunlight. Also its nice getting pointers on not well known settings... well for instance in the menu there is "Custom Settings" which can be pretty daunting but I found c3->PowerOffDelay is a gem because the aggressive sleep mode the Nikon Z5 comes setup as default was driving me nuts!! Every time I go to stage a picture the camera probably went to sleep 2 or 3 times during the process.
When you say don't buy the Z5 for video - I only shoot 50p most of the time. The Z6 would give me any advantage

You Astro photos would not be good in either case because the fastest you can shoot from a tripod with either camera to achieve focus without any star trails at all is around 5 seconds
Quality Astro shots depend more on the lens than the body. If you shoot through a 20mm lens you get about 20 seconds before any star movement. It depends on a few other factors and there’s some formulas you can use to help but about 20 seconds is a good rule of thumb.
Tell you what I noticed, a lot of banding on the second sign at 26:51. Phase detection may work for auto focus but it creates banding. Unacceptable..... Cute kids though.....
Thanks mate. Of the three banding issues mirrorless cameras have, it's likely sensor striping, given the low light and the face detection I used. While absent on the Canons due to dual pixel auto focus, it's an issue with every other brand, but not all that common I've found. Still good pick up on your end.
Z5, FTZ-II, non-AI lenses with a Nikon F as second body. A street photography win.

That’s a great idea if they’re being sold secondhand yet. If you’re shouting wildlife I’d suggest more of a telephoto zoom lens. The 14-30 won’t get you super close.

@@RalphMayhewPhotography : Nik-on would follow more closely the original Japanese reading. I believe this reading is more common in the British Commonwealth, except Canada. Usually, North Americans read it Nike-on, following English vowel rules instead. Nikon just wants their money, so I doubt they really care as long as you don't call them Canon or Sony.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography : Interestingly enough, in an old video of the announcement of the Z series from a Nikon representative in Japan, the letter Z in Japanese was rendered ゼト (zeto), or 'zed', so I guess that helps settle that one. However, at Amazon's DPReview, the offices in Seattle insisted that the letter was officially read as 'zee'. Their video review team, largely Canadian and British, have been resisting their American corporate overlords.
