  • I’m coming up on 3 years riding a recumbent trike and I wanted to pass on what I learned over those years to the new and future riders out there. I’m also featuring a new look that should drive the gals wild.
Mahalo nui loa for riding along with us as we trike all throughout the Hawaiian islands.
PS: my channel features original music, video and photos. Here's this week’s music:

I ride a HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS26 recumbent trike . Here's a link with more gear and facts: www.coconutjoe.com/trike.html
Gear Note: I maintain a simple gear footprint. Accompanied by iphone, gopro max and Skydio drone, I do all my own filming including drone footage. Audio is captured on my phone and then married to the video footage in iMovie where I do all my own editing.

One thing I learned is it is far easier to tip a tadpole recumbent over than I thought.
A U turn on a downhill street had me laying on the ground with my trike on top of me.

So true, I was rolling backwards on a steep, grassy hill and the left wheel hit a deep depression and same thing, the trike ended up on top of me. Check out episode Ep42. 🤙🏽

Hey back at ya Dougie. Yeah I've been using a knife every time I eat that corn for the past three years. Once I get the new tooth, I think I'm still using the knife. I get so much more corn.

The beauty of a trike is that you can uae as low gearing as you want to make hills as easy as you like.
Rather than get a motor and worry about range , I took the low gearing approach. I have a rohloff hub on the back and 44-32-22 chainrings on the front.
In my lowest gear , I have about 13 gear inches compared to 20 on my kona Sutra Touring Bike and 28 on my Ultegra Di2 Endurance bike making hills super easy. I can change the size of the sprocket on the rohloff to make the gearing even lower or taller if I wish.
If you put marathon plus tires on your trike, you won''t have to worry about punctures.

Congrats on going no motor. I have more of an issue with wind than steep hills but I do try to use the gearing approach in concert with the assist or when I’m in no assist. I too love my Rohloff. And yes I also agree, I’ve got marathon plus on all three and seldom have flats. Thanks for the thoughts.

Inflation on tires is more than compressed hot air, new tires always cost more next time! A flat has often been referred to as a loss of inflation which is proven false when the Presta 20"*1.5" tube is $15 more than the Shrader model! Also for me, because I am the only powerplant on my Cat Expedition, an assist is that transport truck passing me 28 inches too close (law reads 1 meter or 40") at speeds where I can accelerate to 80km/h from their wind blast, and the assist is even greater when going down a hill!

Too funny. You need to bring the CAT over to the islands and we’ll ride along the highway on the north shore and I’ll show you some truckers with aloha spirit. Ok, we’ll give the un-Shaka sign to any drivers that get too close to us. Till then, here’s a 🤙🏽assist.

Aloha! Great summary, Bob. Look at all the "stories" you can make up about that missing tooth... Past Hockey Player, Professional Boxer, Smacked Your Mouth on a Microphone, etc.
Because of my bad left knee, I use my e-assist 100% of the time... Usually on Trail or Boost modes.
I haven't taken a recumbent trike ride since I came home from the hospital for COVID-19 (Oct. 15). I'm still having shortness of breath when I exert myself... Walking, Stairs, etc.
Good to see you making another trike video.

My favorite tooth story is that I got into a fight at a Kahuku bar and this gal threw her huge fist square in my face. First there is no bar in Kahuku and most of the gals are mormons. Plus, I can run faster than most of them, especially on my trike. Hope your ailments are slowly fading away and you can get back to doing the thinks you love. One step at time. Aloha Tom.

Got to love those golf courses. Back in 05 I picked up my LoGo the evening prior to leaving Southern California for the Pacific Northwest and hadn't had a chance to do any riding on it other than setting the boom length when I picked it up. Our first night we stopped in Folsom, CA where our niece lived to spend a few nights on our journey and discovered that she lived on a golf course. That evening about an hour before sunset rolled the trike under one of the barriers to the course and proceeded to rip around the course. The few golfers who were finishing up were done by the time I got to the last couple of holes. Nice paved surfaces with plenty of turns and ups and downs, just what makes riding a trike fun. Did it each evening for the four days we spent there. If I had a course around here which had a cart path paved around the whole course I'd probably do it here but with large areas of the fairway with no path I don't want to leave ruts from the narrow tires going from one paved area to another.

Wow, sounds like a great course for triking, evenings perfect. Yes, wide open golf courses are going to have less cart paths I would suppose. Shoots, if we keep riding on golf courses the course marshals are going to get wise. Ok, no more riding on golf courses from now on. 😂 🤞🏼

Thought on getting away with the golf course, acquire some clubs and put them sticking out of a panier with those silly golf socks on each!

What I learned was: The position on a recumbent or crank forward bike is not natural. When correctly fit on a typical bicycle the body is in its most powerful natural position. The knees are the weakest link in that un-natural position, so you will need to keep the stress low, and avoid any steep hills....or...you were born with strong knees that can take the stress. But most people are not born into life as super athletes, so the only way to stay healthy on a recumbent is to have a Ebike so when the strain is too high and dangerous to your knees you can add power. I was professional bike racer in the 80s, and have maintained my cycling and fitness since, but 18 years ago I bought a recumbent and damaged my knee considerably climbing a steep hill. Even though I am highly skilled at high cadences, and all the pedal strokes, it still happened. So, if a recumbent is all you can physically ride comfortably, todays Ebike market can fix you up.

    • @hawaiiantrike-surfkayak
      @hawaiiantrike-surfkayak  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I can ride either but the recumbent is so much more enjoyable and I ride more often. I’m not trying to be a fitness guru or become a highly skilled professional cyclist. Just want to get the cardio, tone the muscles, burn calories and just as important, mental health. Sorry to hear you damaged your knee 18 years ago when riding a recumbent. I assume it was a bike not a trike and you didn’t have the use of your weight climbing that hill. IMHO recumbents weren’t made for power cyclist trying to climb steep hills. More for cruising though having electric assist (e-bike is a dirty word in my realm) allows me to make some extremely steep climbs. BTW, I’m 72 and my knees are in great shape. Happy cycling 🚴 aloha 🤙🏽

Sitting on a seat that allows BOTH leg pedaling AND weight support is not at all natural.
Also, not natural for many to use "clipless" pedals on a recumbent.
Pedal recumbents through the flat of the foot and heels on heel-cup, large-platform pedals.
A recumbent is as comfortable as a recliner chair!

The bicycle position simulates climbing a hill or picking up something heavy, the conventional bicycle places the body in a more natural position meaning the angle of movement of joints is natural. Recumbents do not simulate any movement climbing, running, squatting, the joints are at very unnatural angles for endurance or power. I always caution people that joint damage is very possible if high intensity is used. All people are different, however, and some people have joints that can take the abuse, but the majority of people do not. @@garyseckel295
