      Long ago, i had my sight on vet school but i was terrible at time management and didn't make the grades. I got my degree in biology and then went back to school for vet technology and worked simultaneously as a vet assistant... about 10 years later at 33 i'm playing with the idea of going back to school and pursuing vet school. Any tips or mentions regarding older classmates?

    • @yourvetamanda
      @yourvetamanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ahnnhi8433 That's amazing!! I can't necessarily speak from experience, but I will say there are definitely older students in the program! We've even had people who have been in a completely different career and then decided to pursue vet med! I don't ever think age should deter you from following a dream!!

    • @yourvetamanda

      I worked at a small animal clinic, in animal welfare research and at a zoo! At OVC your experience doesn't really play a role in your application so I don't think any of those things necessarily got me into vet school, however, they definitely helped me figure out what I was interested in in the veterinary field! Hope that helps!

    Hey Amanda! Im applying to OVC right now and, like you, one of my experiences is VIDA volunteer (spay/neuter clinic in Costa Rica) I know you said that you put that under veterinary experience but I was wondering how you went about doing that? The BIF asks for the clinic and name of the veterinarian, so what did you put as the clinic if they were pop up clinics? Sorry if that doesn't make sense I'm just not sure how to fill it out if I worked under multiple vets and there wasn't a specific clinic! Thanks in advance

  • @BeYouty
    @BeYouty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hey Amanda! thank you for all of your amazing videos.
    I just transferred from pharmacy to animal biology, and I have limited experience (around 50 hr in total shadowing a vet). I’m a single mom and getting as many hours of experience as you just doesn’t work for me. Also pandemic has made it extremely hard to find a paid or voluntary job in animal industry. I will be applying to DVM in 2 years. What do you recommend for getting more experience? I also live in Guelph 😁

    • @yourvetamanda
      @yourvetamanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi!! Thanks so much for watching!! You definitely do not need as many hours as I had to get into vet school! For OVC specifically, your experience doesn't really play a role in your application. It's more for your own benefit and to see if the veterinary profession is right for you! So don't worry too much about the hours you have! The University is a great place to look for animal opportunities! Every summer they offer paid research positions and there's a number of them that are working with animals! There's also some really good volunteer opportunities at Guelph such as Foal Watch or College Royal! Hope that helps and best of luck in Animal Biology!

    I graduated from college with a degree in advertising photography. I have worked professionally for large retail brands like Nike, Ralph Lauren, gap, and Tory Burch as a photo retoucher but I am now considering going back to school to become a vet. I know I need to take a couple of courses just to qualify because my degree did not involve any science or math courses. But now I’m concerned that I won’t be able to get in because I have no relevant vet experience besides caring for my own cats and dogs. How do I convince a vet to allow me to shadow them and get relevant vet experience when I don’t have any training?
    Currently I have a cat with acromegaly and this experience of handling her care is why I’m considering a career change. She gets daily medications including insulin injections, liquid medications, and pills. We visit the vets every two weeks and work with a specialist via email every 1-2 weeks. We track her glucose daily and do urinary checks for ketones regularly. Does any of this count as experience hours?

    • @Emmablueday
      @Emmablueday 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you can convey your interest to a vet it shouldn't matter if you have experience off the bat. You have to start somewhere. Just ask to shadow and then when they are more comfortable with you and you are more confident. Ask if you can get some hands on experience or if there are smaller things you can assist with. Work your way up. Maybe you'll get enough experience to apply for an assisting position or end up with a lot of observation hours. Either way.

    hi amanda!
    i've just finished my first year of animal biology at guelph this year! i'm planning on applying to the ovc after my third year, so i'm hoping to gain more experience and acquire possible references for my application! right now i've been shadowing a vet for over two months but i'm not sure if she'll be able to write a good reference letter for me since i'm just watching her. however, i asked her about her references and she used vets who she did research projects and other work for! it seems like those opportunities are the best for getting a good reference because it demonstrates your ability to work instead of watch. so who do you recommend i talk to/where do i go in order to find vets to work under in guelph? or are there any resources for research opportunities that you recommend i check out?
    thanks so much!

    • @yourvetamanda
      @yourvetamanda  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey!! Congrats on finishing your first year, honestly you've got the hardest one over and done with! Every summer the university of guelph will post undergrad research assistantship positions that you can apply for! Some of them are working with faculty at ovc. I did one the summer before vet school (not with a vet) and am working under a professor at ovc currently and can't say enough good things about those positions! The jobs typically get posted around February and you can find them all on the Experience Guelph website! If you have any other questions feel free to reach out! 😊

      Hi! In my experience (in Canada) it doesn't matter what school you go to as long as you have all the prerequsites needed to apply for vet school!
