The following movie reel was filmed by the late Ben Young, and was transferred from his 16mm Kodachrome camera original. Shots include:

Milwaukee streetcar service began May 30, 1860 with horse drawn cars. Electrified April 3, 1890, the last streetcar operated until May 2, 1958. The service was provided by the Milwaukee Electric railroad and Light Company. After a survey was made, residents preferred trackless trolleys of buses.

The next part of the film shows operations on the "Third Avenue Elevated" and Brooklyn trolley lines. The Third Avenue El was the last full remnant of an operated elevated railway running through the length of Manhattan. It operated between 1878 and closed in 1955. It was an icon to New York City, becoming famous like the Empire State Building and the Automat. The rail line, part of the IRT, operated with ancient wooden, electrically powered cars. The following reel was filmed by the late Ben Young, and is transferred from his original 16mm film.
The trip starts northbound from the Chatham Square station. Operations to South Ferry was discontinued in 1950 but is covered in a short film The Vanishing El.

The Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad was an all electrically operated rail system that connected the Chicago Inner Loop, to center city Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The railroad operated with multiple unit, electric cars, powered from either a third rail, or overhead trolley wire. The Electroliner was a 1941 built train, and offered fast and comfortable service between the two cities. The rail road served several military installations including the Great Lakes naval training center near North Chicago and Fort Sheridan.The railroad operated between the 1920s and ended service in January 1963. The rail cars were sold off to museums or scrapped, as were the motor locomotives used for freight. The two Electroliner sets were sold to Philadelphia Transit, and upon retirement, were sold to the Rails to Yesterday Trolley Museum at Rockhill Furness, Pa., and to the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Ill., where their train set has been cosmetically restored and operates.

Thanks...I missed this era in life...and am intrigued by all things of that time - the trains, the cars, the...well everything. I would have loved to have ridden the North Shore Line! I do collect books on that railroad, and enjoy all things North Shore!

This is a great episode of the Chicago area Milwaukee transit rail system i lived in Milwaukee i liked when they showed actual footage of th city of milwaukee street cars and buses actual footageof the new York city transit system is very great i enjoyed the buildings and cars in N Y

The Chicago footage of the L was just amazing crazy how far things have come I ride that train to this very day Chicago's a strange place it's kind of a love-hate relationship you got to love it and you got to hate it

@@mr.k6136 I've noticed on my past travels around Chicago that many areas were night and day different. It's funny how gang shootings don't go to the yuppie areas.
I worked in the Loop from 1965-70 and really liked it. It was an interesting area then, but the beautiful old buildings like the Midwest Stock Exchange, Grand Central Station & the old post office were coming down one after another and replaced by modernist glass & steel monstrosities. They even tried to tear the old library down, but didn't get away with it.
Grew up 3 blocks off of the South Shore line over in Hammond, IN.....
So cool reminds me of riding the trains in NY and Boston. At least before everything was put underground.
During the TV show Goodtimes opening credits you see a westbound train from 1970 when the camera pans out of the downtown

The 3rd Avenue El did not run to Brooklyn, it ran between South Ferry in Downtown Manhattan to Gun Hill Road in the Bronx !!!

Thrid Avenue Elevated in Manhattan is never gonna be rebuilt again. However. Chances are that's definitely gonna happen in the south Bronx Clearmount Webster Boston road Bronx is the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line being rebuilt only in south Bronx one day. Never again in Manhattan. This time it's definitely gonna be under ground after leaving in and out of 138 street and still running on Thrid Avenue under ground.

It's a shame that this line was closed. The effects are being felt today in 2023. The South Shore line as of 2023 is the last Interurban. It's being rebuilt with an branch to be added to it to Dyer Indiana. The whole South Shore rail project will be finish before 2026.
If by some miracle the North Shore Line got saved by RTA or METRA the railroad would most likely take on the appearance of today's SOUTH SHORE LINE with cars very much resembling today's South Shore Line cars ( single level) and would sound exactly the same traction motors and horns. The Milwaukee Street Running no doubt would be eliminated and tracks relocated alongside I-94 like the South Shore Line's trackage in East Chicago Indiana alongside the Indiana Toll Road.
Would have been really nice if you fixed the shaky cam.
But that's part of the nostalgia
I can't take the ridiculous music.

@jacksutherland846: This is the very type music I get when waiting to reach a Verizon Customer Service Representative and the wait is always 2 hours plus 24-7! Then finding out I'm reaching the PHILIPPINES after a horrendous 2 hours plus wait. There's almost no call centers in this country at all no matter where you're calling! And listening to that darn music every time!!!!!
This music is too much like when you call Verizon Customer Service Representatives and have to wait 2 hours plus to reach a representative in The Philippines as Verizon call centers no longer exist in the USA!!! Verizon Customer Service Sucks!!!!!
