What a perfect performance. Everyone is playing flawlessly, the audio mix is so precise it is insane, every section of this song flows into one another so well and it captures so many feelings in the sound.
This song packs an oddly powerful punch. I'm not sure what it is about it that really captures my attention. They're one of the greatest bands of all time, that's for damn sure.
Man this sounds extremely clean, almost as good as studio, no harshness or muddy signals anywhere from what I can tell, props to whoever was in the booth for this.
Apparently, he had one custom made. But if you're looking for a similar effect, I'm sure there's other pedals, but I do know that the Ibanez DE7 Delay/Echo pedal is capable of an oscillating effect like heard in the intro of this song by setting the pedal to "echo" and it's 'repeat' setting to 10 and then manipulating the "delay time" setting.

@Taylor Northern I believe he uses a Turbo Rat by ProCo (Just a fuzzier version of their standard Rat pedal) and A Sovtek Big Muff (Russian made Soviet Big Muff actually constructed during the Cold War!)
Nope not all of them, Thurston is playing a Warmoth guitar that his crew built for him, the fact that it has a short pickguard (Warmoth pickguards don't extend under the bridge like a Fender's does) and no Fender logo are giveaways. But all the same, Thurston's signature Jazzmaster was based on that Warmoth guitar.
during the 4:00-4:30 when they're doing the feedbacked out guitars, what kind of pedal is Thurston using for his freakout? It sounds like Ranaldos using the delays, any ideas on recreating Thurston's freak out sounds in Antenna?
That guitar tone is def picking behind the bridge in conjunction with the ProCo Turbo Rat, that's my guess. Maybe with that Dunlop Hendrix Octave Fuzz too but I have that pedal and its typically got a more intense and gated tone. Also maybe his Sovtek Big Muff is active at this point as well...???
I have had that octave fuzz for years its quite intense and loud and hard to be subtle with. its get such spikey attack and cuts hard into a band mix, great for doing noise with.
Very late but I think he has a metal muff on and is kind of pick scraping the bottom three strings, it's not too hard to get the sound of that with a lot of distortion but fuzz works best.
In her book Kim talked about realizing Thurston didn’t wanna play certain songs live anymore after she found out about the other woman because they were about her. I always thought this had to be one of them.
It's because he spends so much time off of the planet dreaming up wonderful noises.. I heard he wrote the breakdown to this song whilst sat on the rings of Neptune!
Because she was suffering from arthritis during the record of The Eternal, they enlisted help from Pavement bassist Mark Ibold during the Rather Ripped tour he took bass duties in the new album
Its a handmade delay pedal built by one of their techs (its on the gear page of their website) but not much details shown on its specifics, however from the sound/tone I reckon its likely an analog type delay and not a digital delay... you can but typically don't get those nice sounding feedback oscillating tones with a digital delay. My guess is that its modeled after an Ibanez AD-9 (which Lee uses in his "floor" effects rig)
What’s the deal with Kim playing guitar and having a separate bass player on stage? I feel like I’ve seen this a few times but not sure what the story is there.
Custom made delay but most analog and some digital delays can when you crank feedback/repeats past a certain point and the pitch can be changed by the time knob
I own the Lee Ranaldo signature Jazzmaster and it makes me feel so happy.
I I’m sad me sad I will never had one and I totally had the chance to get one too 🤦🏻♂️🥲
the sound engineer did a perfect job, it must be hard to manage a band like sonic youth.
u did a perfect job, it must be hard to imagine comments like this 😝
He had a special delay pedal made for him by Matt Zivich, it's called the "Antenna Box", you can guess where the name came from :)
After all these years still on my list of best bands every. Period!
No doubt

cool...they're actually playing their signature model guitars.
Thurston's already has deep cuts in his! hahaa
Looks like Kim's is the J Mascis sparkly purple job.
yes but no, the one thurston´s using is a custom warmoth build, which became the basis for the actual fender signature
One of my faves by them. That part where they all come in at 4:51 after the massive breakdown is sooooooo satisfying to me.
Man this sounds extremely clean, almost as good as studio, no harshness or muddy signals anywhere from what I can tell, props to whoever was in the booth for this.
Good to see Mark Ibold still busting out the old Pavement two step
one of my favorite freaky drone rock pop songs
Great sound balance. Kudos to the engineer.
Planant et bruitiste à la fois, la marque des sonic youth!
No matter how many years go by, this song will always move something inside my heart.
I am a big fan of Sonic Youth
Kim rocking the j mascis sig. Jazzmaster
"Paint it purple." - J. Mascis, probably.

R.I.P SONIC YOUTH :(
Precioso!
This song is one of my favourite
Got to see this album tour live! I feel lucky.
nice to see they still got it
@Taylor Northern

Cool info mate, thanks
@Picsie Its a special designed delay called antenna box,but i think that its a parametric filter and a delay together in one box =)
amazing, sometimes it's hard to believe in what they can do in terms of noise...
It's making me crazy, this guitar
This live take goes particularly hard. Wish this was the version on the the record.
well, at least you have both
Thanks man.
Kickass tune

I want Thurston and Lee to talk me to sleep.
AWESOME
they're the greatest
Yes it is

I see he's picking under the bridge, but there's this high pitched robotic frequency that comes in the right audio channel at 4:12 what is that?
@@Rambo29 might be a fuzz pedal

Thurston tends to only use the Octave Fuzz for 'solos'. The part where he's going mental outside the stage he uses it. BTW, I wish I had one!
I have had that octave fuzz for years its quite intense and loud and hard to be subtle with. its get such spikey attack and cuts hard into a band mix, great for doing noise with.
It sounds like a fuzz pedal of some sort. The Zvex Fuzz Factory can produce a self-oscillating fuzz sound like that.
It could also just be a delay with full feedback and the time moved.
Sic live version!!!!!!!!
It's favorite guitar I did the same replacing the white pick up covers with black ones
4:14 please someone tell me how thurston makes that noise
Very late but I think he has a metal muff on and is kind of pick scraping the bottom three strings, it's not too hard to get the sound of that with a lot of distortion but fuzz works best.

Does thurston actually age? or is he a timelord
7 years later and this comment is still valid. So yeah, timelord confirmed!
It's because he spends so much time off of the planet dreaming up wonderful noises.. I heard he wrote the breakdown to this song whilst sat on the rings of Neptune!
Nine years later and he looks like my grandfather's older neighbor.
阪神タイガース!?
阪神タイガース…!?
Some better than others
No. None of them are better than the others.
Anyone know what kind of Sound box Lee is using in the beginning?
analog delay
Does anybody know wich is the pedal lee uses here?
Por que kim gordon no está tocando el bajo?
Because she was suffering from arthritis during the record of The Eternal, they enlisted help from Pavement bassist Mark Ibold during the Rather Ripped tour he took bass duties in the new album

What pedal use Lee, to make that crazy sound and the beginning? sorry for my english :3
Delay pedal, don't know which he is using though.
Delay/Octave/Feedback ??? xD

You can get a very similar type of delay with MXR Carbon copy

Wtf
Seriously, how do you do those delay pedal sounds like Lee?
His pedals are all custom for the most part. Only him and his guitar tech know what's in them.
Really late but just crank feedback/repeats past a certain point and manipulate pitch with time knob can get a somewhat similar effect
Nah pretty sure he's a timelord
@FuckingStanz NO!!!!!! NEVER ENOUGH!!!! :)
Custom made, but you can get the same noises with an MXR Carbon Copy, or generally any other analog delay.
