The early 80s had such a diverse underground scene. I'm still playing catch up and listening to stuff I didn't get a chance to hear back then. I miss the 90s too 😞
I've listened to this legendary & great band countless times over the years, but only with Andy Gill's death have I finally seen a live version of the band in action, via this video. Just as I imagined, 4 unassuming looking blokes tearing it up with dangerous lyrics and a stunning groove. Go4, thanks for tingling my spine one more time, RIP
Saw the Go4 at the now defunct Lyceum in London in late 1983. The support group was The Smiths! Both groups were sensational. Andy Gill was a class act. Another post punk hero has gone, but what a legacy he has left. He is at peace now.
I saw them at The Ritz (in New York City) a couple of years before that. It was the original lineup (the one shown here). What a GREAT live band they were.
Had to watch this again to be reminded of how badass this legendary Post-Punk band was. They rocked the hell out of this performance! Losing Andy was one of the many sucky things about 2020. But that guitar feedback will linger on and on...#RIPAndy
Gang of Four toured Australia, NZ and China in late 2019. On return to UK Andy Gill developed a mystery illness. His partner later wrote that it was likely Covid 19 but before it had been identified.
@@matthewjdouglas6471 He was an early Covid victim. He died of pneumonia and multiple organ failure in February 2020, shortly after returning from China. Initial reports were baffling. Several months later, his symptoms and circumstances pointed to Covid. Nothing that I've heard gives it as a definitive cause of death, but medical experts agree that nothing else adds up to what transpired.
So many stonkingly great songs from post punk era bands like Gang of Four. What a great time it was for music! You just can't go wrong with 60s 70s and 80s decades for the most iconic and unique artists and bands. R.I.P Andy Gill.
R.i.p Andy gill ..glad that I got to see a reformed (gang of four) play a blinding set at all tomorrow's party's in 2007 ..a moment forever etched on my memory
Perfect example of a radical band that broke through because their songs were catchy and almost no one even listens to the lyrics, but the few who do really learn something with GoF
One of the first bands I heard on a college radio station and one of the first amazing albums I bought from this insanely creative musical period. Will miss you, Andy. x (Eventually became a DJ at said station, in part thanks to GoF)
Naturals Not In It is still my favorite tune with Tourist a close second. I saw these guys 4 times in Rhode Island and Boston including their come back tour......in my top 5 live bands. Entertainment one of the most political statement albums ever made.
I had seen the lads live in NYC in the 80s at a nightclub called Limelight and had the opportunity to go backstage and meet Andy and Jon. Andy was a complete gentlemen Jon is a bit of a street urchin personality. RIP Andy Gill we will always love your music!
I love how the how band are grooving to their own music. I'm mesmerized in particular by Andy Gill, the guitarist. Wish I was half that smooth playing guitar
Brisbane 2011, the Soundwave Festival. All these big name metal bands playing and I have to choose between the main stage and Slayer or seeing Gang of Four on one of the little side stages. I chose Gang of Four and never regretted it. Had heard a bit of their stuff before, but the energy that they put into that set made me a fan. They went hard, and I was gutted at the passing of Andy Gill.
His guitar literally sounds dangerous. Probably one of the most iconic players ever.
Well said
True
Very dangerous and very outside-the-box of rock convention’s tidy perfect scales and solos, Gill was a complete original
Exceedingly underrated guitar indeed.
That is probably a unique style Certainly I can’t think of anyone (even say Hendrix) who barks that sort of thing out in such an angry way
That was 44 years ago!!! The world hasn't caught up yet.
The early 80s had such a diverse underground scene. I'm still playing catch up and listening to stuff I didn't get a chance to hear back then. I miss the 90s too 😞
Andy Gill is a Legend
The Fall, Joy Division, Pere Ubu, Patti Smith, Gang of Four...how did my mind not explode back then?!
It did mate, we just haven't accepted it yet. X
riiight?!
It did , you just forgot what it felt like which isn't hard judging the crap music nowadays
I took acid and speed to cope.
´ We only miss things , once we lose them ` said some random lonely loser I know .
"To hell with poverty, we'll get drunk on cheap wine."
The great ones make it look easy.
Rest In Peace Andy Gill! So sad to hear of his passing.. 😔

Add me to the list. Atleast you where 4years ahead of me.
Dear Andy, your staccato guitar playing contrasting with Dave Allen's "White Funk" baselines changed my life. Rest In Peace dear brother.
Saw the Go4 at the now defunct Lyceum in London in late 1983.

To Hell with Morrissey...

What do you think of the Hard album?
Damn.
Good bye Andy , the Best guitarrist of my favorite post punk BAND . RIP

I don’t know, but now you have arrived. Rejoice!
Same here
Damaged Goods is the hit
The absolute best of an exceptionally high quality arsenal of songs from this killer band
They look like random guys from some big corporation, got together to jam, but still in suits. Gotta love them
Amazing what you can do with two chords and a ton of imagination
Hell yeah
the most epic opening of a song
Andy Gill such incredible guitar tone.
Such an innovator. Distinct sound and no one like him. You will be missed
I have watched this video everyday for literally 3 months dude its so good.
40 years later, still a winner.
After all those many years their music never became boring!

Absolutely dangerous sound!
I didn't know he was sick. I saw him in 2019 and he looked in great shape. Really great infact. So how did he die so suddenly. Was it heart failure

The Gang was (and stil is) one of the coolest bands ever. So much love and respect for those guys.
RIP Andy Gill what a fabulous intro...
This song is about to get a WHACK load more views. Sly's netflix documentary came out today.

I would say “overlooked”.
Every white dude music blogger sings their praises so hardly underrated
Wow. Heady stuff for 1980. I member....fantastic stuff.

Superb...the great Andy Gill ....listen to that guitar... we were blessed to hear such great music. Thank you Andy....
This song is so good and still so relavant today I am stunned to my core that no American at the time thought of it.God bless these boys!
What an energy this band had.
The best intro to a song. Only GO4 could do it!
Truly an anthem.
That bass and drum intro! Killer!!!
Rhythm section first class plus Andy...
Sounds like the wall tour run like hell
I saw this band live twice in USA. Goddamnedest best stage shows ever. Just raw.

These guys did more to shape the musical landscape than they were ever given credit for 🤔
Love the noises of this band , brilliant stuff
Make music like this again world
Listen to Idles.
Remember seeing Gang of Four at Eric's in Liverpool back in the day, Great gig, supported by the Au Pairs, late 79 early 80
Oh, that must have been fantastic.
Perfect example of a radical band that broke through because their songs were catchy and almost no one even listens to the lyrics, but the few who do really learn something with GoF
i can see the influence they had on unwound. this is awesome. no wonder unwound loved them.
this stuff was truly revolutionary
Effortlessly cool performance.

R.I.P. Andy Gill! Thank you for all the great music!
I was 15 in 1980. This type of music attracted me a lot. Suddenly a different type of music.
I had seen the lads live in NYC in the 80s at a nightclub called Limelight and had the opportunity to go backstage and meet Andy and Jon. Andy was a complete gentlemen Jon is a bit of a street urchin personality. RIP Andy Gill we will always love your music!
Yah I've always thought that Cat's guitar was ready to smoke into fire, And that continual pissed off look on his face ?... Loved It !
I saw Gang of Four live in Chicago in about 1980. They were amazing! Saw Pere Ubu too! (Same year, not Same concert😅)
🎵In this land right now

And they're in charge 🎵
Thank you for teach me through your music how a guitar must be played, Mr. Gill.

Just read of his passing in the LA Times today. So sad to hear this news. Thank you Andy...Rock Heavens Gate !!
Saw them at Barrymore's in Ottawa 1984 when they had the two black chicks up front singing back up vocals and Sara Lee on bass.

10/11/20 MY LOVE FOR THIS SONG BROUGHT ME HERE TODAY!!!
I saw the live in Hamburg in 1980.
He produced the chili peppers first album, apparently the band and Andy were always arguing
Really... As they got that crazy rasta from the mother ship to produce one of their albums later on
Poop on mixing desk with Andy Gill and George Clinton for Freakey Styley and lots of uh illegal things.
