  • Mount Etna, Europe's most active and tallest volcano has been blowing from different "mouths" for three days in February of 2021. The scenes from the highway and the towns around Mount Etna show the magnitude of the eruption which was accompanied by lava fountains that reached heights of up to 700 m and spewing emission of ash, which rose to 9.1 km above sea level. Flights in and out of Catania Airport were halted for a few hours. No deaths were reported and no major damage, except to crops.

    I've been watching the eruptions live over the last week. Although such a beautiful sight to behold, I do hope you all stay safe and keep those face masks on as to not breathe in all that ash. Being from Australia, I'm used to ash from Bushfires that fall on us. At the beginning of last year when we suffered catastrophic Bushfires, it was hard to breathe inside my home and face masks were being supplied by the government. The smoke blocked the sun which made it dark inside our homes on many days. I do hope you remain safe. Ciao from Victoria, Australia.🇦🇺

      You can never stop mankind settling in dangerous areas. Just look at Indonesia. Each year the Tectonic plate that Australia is on moves northwards. You'd be surprised at how many volcanoes there are in Indonesia. The town's around Mt. Etna are safe at present as the activity is occurring very high up. Only if there are signs of more severe activity causing danger to citizens, would any evacuation request be given. Etna has been misbehaving for sometime now, she's probably just reminding Sicillians she's still awake.

    • @HotelPapa100
      @HotelPapa100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vickiwalsh5099 There has been volcanic activity of comparable level throughout the ages, ever since humans have started recording these things.
      A volcano is considered extinct once it's been quiet for 10'000 years. Tells you something when such a statement can be true at all.
      What has changed is our perception of these events. Everybody carries around a highly capable recording device, and any eruption near populated areas is posted on multiple channels within hours.
      Any person who has a business instructing high schoolers about such things should have known better, even in the eighties.
      And, speaking of the eighties: Mt St. Helens, the most widely communicated big volcanic eruption in recent years, blew its top on May 18, 1980. Your teacher must have been living under a rock.

      Vesuvius? Heh, not to scaremonger you, but you do know there's a far bigger monstrosity dormant below Napels right? And its slowly waking up again! The Campi Flegrei supervolcano on the western side of the city, underneath the harborplace of Piozzuoli. The surface has risen several meters over the course of the past decades. There are active fumaroles venting suphuric gasses, and increasing seismic(volcanic/magmatic) activity. It would be another 50-100 years, it could also start within a few days.
      Much as experts can predict on volcanic eruptions, it remains a science that is still in its crib, despite the vast information discovered already.
      To state it simple: The magmachamber(s) underneath Napels áre dormant, yet a simple crack in some basalt layer, leaking smaller quantities of eruptable magma, onto a mineral-rich composite, filled with sulphur, could cause an explosive reaction that'd even reach the surface, where the subterran masses would contact vast amounts of carbon and oxygen(y'know the most most reactive substances on the periodic table?) and create a húge eruption!
