Absolutely love Master of Reality. Went to a friend's place to hang out, she had some records and I put on the Sabbath album, only really knowing the three hits from Paranoid, and from the instant that Sweet Leaf riff came blasting out I knew I had been missing out on some incredible music (this was probably ten years ago)

T.Rex were hugely influential to lots of NWOBHM musicians back in the day. Bolan could fire off some really crunchy riffs when he wanted. 20th Century Boy from '73 has to be among the heaviest of the whole decade.

No quibbles with this list! Although most of us probably never need to hear half of LZIV again, it must be recognized for what it is - a pillar of 20th century rock music. Of the two Alice Cooper albums in the running for the list, I'm glad Killer got the edge. It's just slightly more sinister - while simultaneously more accomplished - than its predecessor. If not exactly 'heavy metal' per se, it's certainly very heavy in spirit and intent. And Master Of Reality - what can one say? It's the embodiment of heaviness, a lynchpin in the metal milieu. I *am* a bit surprised ZZ Top's debut wasn't mentioned at all, though.

You should have included Norman Haines band 'Den of Iniquity' which includes a song which Black Sabbath demoed. with Norman during the Newtown Community Centre rehearsals, but Jim Simpson and Don Arden politics got in the way.

@Martin Popoff looks like then you don't attract any record collectors. your cohort might know about Leafhound but are ignorant of other £3000+ discs .. irony is is that Norman Haines is better

There can only be one No. 1!
    01] Deep Purple - Fireball
    02] The Who - Who's Next
03] Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality
    04] Yes - Fragile
05] The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
    06] Black Sabbath - Paranoid
    07] Jethro Tull - Aqualung
    08] The Doors - L.A. Woman
09] Yes - The Yes Album
    10] Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus

Yeah, that was the obvious choice for #1. There's a pretty good argument to be made that the rest of those albums aren't even heavy metal, but obviously we're still at the very beginning of things here and don't have that many choices.

Nice you mentioned MC5 - High Time Martin. A great record, that I really like a lot. Master of Reality had to win thin year, even there are albums I like more by them.

I don't agree with your rating of Budgie's debut. It deserves a 5 for me. More people need to listen to it.

kinda saw that #1 from a mile away. considering banger's audience it really felt like the only reasonable choice :)

    • @robiu013
      @robiu013 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Martin Popoff hm, i wouldn't be sure about this. take rateyourmusic for example. both led zeppelin iv and master of reality have top-notch reviews, but led zeppelin iv has about 10,000 ratings more (ratio between rating amounts is 3:2 for led zeppelin), meaning, that if the audience was less exclusively metal-oriented, it is not unlikely, that led zeppelin iv would have edged out in the end. that was my thought anyway. but thanks for the response :)

490th thumbs up from me!! Well, I voted the #2 album, not bad. Love Sabbath but, you can't beat Zeppelin IV!! Anthem, after anthem, after ass pounding anthem!! Even the acoustic ones beat out Master Of Reality. You can hear any of the Zeppelin IV songs on FM radio, currently. You would never hear any of the Master Of Reality songs!?! No contest, Zeppelin IV, 5 stars. Thanks Martin, peace out from the southern tip of Vancouver Island, B.C. CANADA

BUDGIE BUDGIE BUDGIE BUDGIE!!!!!!!! COME ON MARTIN. FIRST 5 budgie albums are all classic. the early stuff is the most metal and creative. later stuff got less consistent and had weird funk experiments. Burke's voice is love or hate it. very similar in many ways to Geddy Lee. How can you just give them 3 outta 5?

  • @tenbroeck1958

I love Zep III, but IV became part of Western culture! Heavy blues, with hints of folk. The musicianship was great. Anyone who gives Budgie props can't be too bad!!

I don't think 5 great metal albums came out in '71, just 4:
    1. Salisbury by Uriah Heep
    2. Look at Yourself by Uriah Heep
    3. Master of Reality by Black Sabbath
    4. Budgie by Budgie

  • @shaynewest8757

I love both Alice Cooper albums but they are nowhere near metal. Its more garage rock played by top notch musicians. Uriah Heep should be up there for Shadows Of Grief alone.
