This reminded me of the line from To Kill a Mockingbird:
Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum.

After watching this, I got so 'homesick' for the late Miss Phyllis (Stokes) and Mr. (Dr.) Bucky and her videos showing her struggle to find a tea cake just like his grandmother's and how a viewer finally sent a recipe that was more similar to his memory. Maybe you were a viewer of hers, Lori? Her son has done a lovely job keeping her channel going and helping her ministry. Between your recipe and hers you've got me longing to try a batch of these.

What a joy Miss Phyllis was. My grandchildren love making those tea cookies! It was a gal named Patti that sent Miss Phyllis the recipe. Mr Bucky, after tasting it, looked up towards heaven and said, "I'm sorry, Grandma. These are better than yours." It was priceless!

I know what you mean Molly. Miss Phyllis was one of a kind. I watch Stephen's videos too. She would be very pleased with what he's doing with her channel, and she and Mr Bucky's ministry.

My granny (born in 1896) made THE BEST tea cakes ever (recipe passed down to her by her mother who was born in 1874.) She never used measuring cups or spoons, just her hands ("a heaping, a smidgen, a pinch") and used a wood stove until the mid 1960s. Each of my aunts and female cousins have tried and tried to "figure out" her recipe but never could do it. I am going to try your recipe and see how close it is to hers. Thanks for posting!

Those tea cakes look amazing! I used to make a recipe from Germany when I was a little girl. The recipe book disappeared from my mom's house, but they looked much like these but with raisins in them. They were my favorite! I hope someone can share the recipe I've been searching for, for 40 years. Until then, these will do nicely. Thank you again Miss Lori. ❤😊

This is very similar to a recipe my great grandmother made but hers didn't use confectioner sugar or have oil. She used to say she was "scottish to the backbone" 😊. She had a 57 acre farm and made everything from scratch. My mom and uncle grew up with her because her mom passed during childbirth when my mom was just a year and a half old, so I really thought of her as my grandmother. I can't wait to try this recipe.

Hello Mrs. Lori and Mr. Brown. Thanks for sharing . The recipe for your tea cake cookies . I had to laugh . Not at anyting you done . True story a friend of mine . Came to stay the weekend with me . Both teenagers I asked my Mother . If I could make her tea cake cookies . Made up several batches of them . Still had a bunch of dough left . Sharon said lay the rest of the dough . On a cookie sheet . The dough blew up in the oven . I turned the oven off . Didn't say any thing to my Mother . She come in the house opend the oven . Look she gave me I knew I was in trouble . My poor Mother scraped and clean that oven for hour's . My friend went home the next day . And I sure got a load of my Mothers mouth . I was grounded for two weeks . I lost my Mother's recipe . I'm going to keep your recipe . Both Of You Have A Blessed Weekend .

I so agree with your statement about your grandmother always cooking from scratch. I sat here and thought, could my grandmother have followed a recipe like we do these days? It was always a handful of this, two handfuls, a smidgen, just a bit. Yet she taught me so much about baking and cooking. I've been going thru your recipes searching for what I can use for that box of goodies to my grandson. I figure these will pack well. I love what you read to us. Especially the part about before the war, I'm assuming the civil war. Now don't you think a bunch of young service men will enjoy that story. I'm going to sit and type what you read and print it to add to his box of these tea cakes.

She was the best. M mother & I were from Germany & from her & my German family I was taught German baking & cooking. My father was first generation American his parents were from Poland. My grandparents passed when I was young. My father was ten years older than my mother and was 32 when I was born. So his sisters & he taught me Polish cooking & baking. While living in Europe I traveled & learned many old world recipes. I was a History Major & one thing I loved is following recipes along with settlers across this country. Thank you so much for sharing.

That will bring you to a section that provides INFO for this video. In the 2nd section (I believe), there are MORE #HASHTAGS. After the last # (whipperwillholler), it contains the ACTUAL RECIPE! It states 1 CUP of oil.

My Mom told me that when she was growing up, she couldn't wait to get home from school every evening to eat one of her Mom's tea cakes. They were poor, living in the mountains of Kentucky. My Papaw worked in the coal mines to provide for six children. I'm sure my grandmother only had the basics to make tea cakes with, but my Mom always looked forward to her treat!

Hi Miss Lori. When my sisters and I were young we wanted to make snickerdoodles but we didn’t have cinnamon or nutmeg. So we skimmed our Momma’s really old cookbook and found a recipe for a soft cookie and it called for ground mace. We had no idea how that recipe would follow us into our adulthood. Our cookie recipe reminds me of your tea cake cookies. Yours look so delicious!

My aunt gave me her recipe back in the 80's. She always brought her tea cakes to our family reunions. I enjoy making these and yes they're great with coffee 😊

Oh my goodness, I have this recipe a friend of mine gave it to me years ago, I is my husband and my kids favorite sugar cookies, I usually only make them at Christmas. I love them, this year at Christmas (I am cutting back on oil) I used a half of a stick of cream cheese and 1/2 cup of sour cream instead of the oil. It makes them a little more dense and more cake like. I also roll the dough the size of a walnut then roll in a bowl of sugar, flatten on cookie sheet, back . I love your peanut butter bars and have made them a lot, they don't stay around to long! Thank you for your video's and your time to share with us, your cookies look fantastic.

This is a little different from my mother-in-law’s recipe. I used to make them at Christmas every year. Recently a friend visited us. One of the things he remembered from 40 years ago was my tea cakes. I made a batch for him (my hubby was happy about that). He was so happy!

My Mama always talked about my Granny’s tea cakes and how much she loved them growing up. Mama didn’t have the recipe nor did any of her sisters. She said the cookies were crispy on the edges and like cake in the middle. I’m going to try these. I’ll have them with coffee on the porch and think of her. ❤️
