After a few months of digesting it I truly feel Cousin is one of their finest records.
I feel exactly the same. I’d put it up there with YHF, Ghost, Summerteeth and Being There. And I’d didn’t like Ode to Joy at all and so I really wasn’t expecting it.
@@Andy-rc9db Ode to Joy may have not been their best, but Cruel Country was exceptional. And this is a magnificent follow up.
Cruel Country has some masterpiece moments, Bird jam, I Am My Mother, but it's only a couple and it's kinda crazy it was a double album.
Cousin has a masterpiece of an opener with INFINITE SURPRISE & Soldier Child is a really really cool song, but to claim it's up there with YHF or AGIB or Summerteeth is insane & just not true.
What's weird? I dig that they're actually using modulation on the guitars, whether that's flanger or chorus.
Some of the lyrics are totally mailed in on Cousin, then they can be really good and shock you.
I saw them a few days before this was filmed, the 4th time I've seen Wilco (2012, 2016, 2021, 2023) and they were great. They played the best songs from both Cousin and Cruel country and didn't mess with any of the filler. But I longed for a longer show. I get it, they're older and they played 2 1/2 hours to 3 hours a night from 2004-2017, but damn....just want more Wilco.
@scottd5705 ode to joy was a terrible record. Star Wars was so good tho.
As much as i have always loved the song, I used to hate that they played Handshake Drugs every gig, and then I realized this is a warhorse and that's all good. Wilco need songs like this, Jesus Incorporated, etc. Weird, Jeff's vocals are double tracked on Handshake Drugs.
