Blue's glowup honestly makes me so happy, you can so clearly see how he grew from a smug, cocky little bully to a more mature, kinder boy that acts as a mentor while still retaining his playful smugness. Even his physical design shows his development as a person without erasing what made him Blue.
Blue feels like that older brother that annoys you when you're young but becomes someone you can rely on and a fun presence when you both get older. He's still the same person at heart but he's learned and grew past a few of his not so desired qualities.

I love Blaine’s glow-up. Having recently played SS, it’s great when you fight Blaine and he seems to be almost happy to be beaten, because it means his cave gym that he made is a real gym

I never thought about that aviator + Pidgeot connection when thinking of Blue! That's a great catch!
I realized it more recently when Masters had him with Pidgeot and I was like “Oh yeah, that is kind of his ace Pokémon in HGSS.”
This also made me realize that Blue gives out the Earth Badge, which is shaped like a feather since Giovanni was meant to be a Flying gym leader initially. I guess it’s a nice connection

@@luncenysano5840 The Earth Badge is actually similar to a Sakaki Tree (Sakaki being Giovanni's name in japanese)! It is kind of feather looking, but the green gives it away!

@@GatorEX While I enjoy the concept, the fact that they were basically using EV trained Pokemon made it VERY difficult to enjoy it, especially with how annoying it was to get competitive Pokemon back in Gen 5. Otherwise, yeah I feel the same about them. 👍🏻

These glow ups are pretty awesome. It's like all the Kanto gym leaders grew up a bit or became more casual. The only ones I'm not super big on are Misty and Sabrina simply because I like their pre timeskip out fits more. I'd also love to hear more about the Johto character's redesigns.

Same!!! I love everyone's but Sabrina's and Misty's were SO GOOD before. Misty was soooooo cute and I loved her outfit and hair!! She looked much more like the "tomboyish mermaid" theme :(
Fun fact: in the gen 8 anime, Lance appears in his HG/SS outfit, and it’s revealed that he trained at the Hammerlocke Gym and he based his outfit on the uniforms there
When Blaine says to bring a burn heal, it’s not because of his Pokémon, but because you'll get torched from this man's based and dripped out look.
As for Sabrina, I never considered she might be a part of Team Rocket, but it actually makes sense considering the raid on Silph Co happening just down the street from her gym and her doing absolutely nothing about it. ... ...Or maybe she got lost in her own tile puzzle. What do I know?
Or she just went in there, grabbed some Rocket outfit and blended with them waiting to see how it'll all blow up.
Stupid theory but, I'd assume she is actually fighting the Team Rocket themselves inside the Gym as well.

The Whips in Gen1 had nothing to do with Team Rocket, but in a earlier stage in Developement Whips where part of "Training" Pokemon... but the Whip-Part got changed during developement and the only Remnant are some Sprites (i belive Rockets, Sabrina, Bikers, Lasses, Aces and Rockers)
Yup 💯, you can see it in the Bandai Cardbass set, and the early, early 90s concept art for Red/green.
Sabrina having a whip have always made sense to me if you think about that, since most of the time, Sabrina's looks are always based of off ace trainers, even her LGPE outfit is based off of Gen 4 ace trainers.
Idk what ace trainer where they thinking when they designed HGSS though.
I'd like to see a video on some alternate designs that characters have gotten in different sources. Sygna suits from Masters, different versions from various manga series (I really like how Cyrus looks in Diamond and Pearl Adventure and yet all they did was make his jacket longer), card art, etc.
I really love the stuff we get for Masters. The only thing is that it’s constantly updating and changing, so each new event there’s a cool new outfit I really like. Maybe like as a year end recap it could work.
3:18-3:21 I think the cane is ALSO a similar homage to Riddler's cane being the top is "sorta" like a top of a question mark which is fitting as Blaine also loves to give riddles❓

It's kinda funny. I could see HGSS Blaine as the one who'd run a game show quiz with his sneaky grin and nice suit, and his previous outfit being the one in the cave because it gives off cooky and reclusive mad scientist vibes
Love the change to Sabrina. The previous one was great, but that one does feel more...mature? First one feels like she tries to be a psychic stereotype and second one like a person who matured and decided that "Screw it, I'll wear what I want."
Koga also started to have gray hair. I first thought it was to accent the hair colour, but no, they are little too light colour.
I love FRLG onwards Lance, but I kinda miss his dorky Gen 2 sprite. That pose was amazing.
also doesn't help that one of the sprites has a whip to imply some... well I'm sure some would like what it implies.

Lieutenant Surge's change in outfits over the three years between the games remind me a lot of one of the pieces of dialogue of Black Ops 1, surprisingly. When you first see Woods again in the mission S.O.G. Mason tells him that "he looks like hammered sh*t" to which Woods responds: "Looks don't count for sh*t in the jungle." At the end of the mission, Bowman will say the same line to Mason as well after which he responds: "Well, Nam will do that to ya." I guess the reason it reminds me of that is because Surge's outfit starts off as uniform but changes to something more lax, just like with soldiers who were already fighting for a while in the Vietnam war. Maybe it's just me, who knows?

I think Blaine’s redesign has some serious Jurassic Park vibes. The hat and cane make me think of John Hammond, which works for a mad scientist living in a theme park built on a volcanic island.

I've gotta love Misty and Brock's designs... mostly cause they're the ones we've seen so much of from the anime, but now we can see them as to how they grow on their own... hmm, imagine if they did travel with Red in a similar fashion as well, and this is the result of their travels.
One of my favorite glow ups in pokemon is still going to be them giving Maxie those glasses in the remakes it just fits, the rest of his outfit is a little silly but the turtle neck and glasses feel more like Maxie's character than his original design did but I'd love to hear more on the jhoto trainers too!

It’s kinda weird how out of all the Kanto characters they could’ve redesigned, they didn’t change Red. Everyone else changes after meeting him but he does not.
Sabrina is my favorite Gym Leader. Her HGSS design's the best thing ever. I just imagine her trying to loosen up so she goes to the Celadon Dept Store and struggles to pick up clothes, bumps into Erika. Then Erika picks up the most unexpected clothes for her. Literally the definition of "I wouldn't wear them myself but"

I think Red not getting a redesign was done to up his intimidation factor. In the story, he's been hiding out at the top of Mount silver, the highest and coldest point in two regions, for three years. You'd think that would call for at least giving the poor kid a jacket, but no. He's still wearing the same t-shirt and jeans like he always did. Red is so tough he's survived three years in a place that should've killed him within a few hours
It's such a tiny detail but I really like Brock having longer hair.
I like these sequel redesigns because it really seems like the events of the first games and the main protagonists Red/Green had a positive impact on each of the gym leaders. Each character, Misty, Erika, and Sabrina all seem much happier to see new protagonists Gold/Crystal progressing through their own journeys year later
I still have some mix feelings about Sabrina's new look. I always liked how she looked like a "mysterious psychic trainer" and I enjoy it being re-envision over the years, especially in the Lets Go remakes that make her look so good! In HG/SS, I feel like they tried to modernize her, I mean, it isn't bad per say, but I feel like the only link to her being psychic are her bracelets or should I call them shackles or maybe, power inhibitors? IDK.
It isn't bad like I said, I just prefer her old look.

Pokemon does a pretty good job on glowups. ORAS must be one of my favorite remakes of Gen 3 for glowups, they did an amazing job on all of the characters, so did HGSS as well. I really like Ethans glowup, not because he's one of my favorite protagonists, he looks better than from gold or silver.

Yea no terrible redesign, one dimensional, immature art style, and terrible proportions. Ken sugimori art styles from the first 3 generations are the G.O.A.T....... Gold's best interpretation is the cover art for Japanese TCG set neo Discovery. You can also look up The ruins of Alph official art work of that period. The Gamefreak 2000 new year card art, And "encounter with a shiny Pokemon" art piece......

I feel like Blain goes from "generic mad scientist" to "Jurassic Park"... all he need is some old amber in his cane
Blaine in the manga is probably the best gym leader. Poses as TR scientist and develops Mewtwo with his own DNA, bonding the two. They give a canon reason why there's art of him without a moustache and no glasses. He's the first to know Yellow's secret and seems to be the most helpful and resourceful ally to the protag trainers.
Sabrina's full body suit is also probably a recolor of her manga look, as she's a TR admin and her outfit is almost 1 to 1 to that outfit, just in TR colors and her wrists are rendered borderline useless by Lorelei in Adventures, requiring her to seek the hot springs of Mt Silver (much like Red does) so the wrist bracelets she has could be a reference to that.
Sabrina and Blaine have the ILLEST fit. Love their glow ups

With Blaine, I wanna say the reason he is dressed differently because of the volcano. The volcano destroyed his home, his gym, his island. There's a good chance he almost died or at least in extreme danger.
Now Blaine is living his life. Casual style. The cane is probably about him getting hurt during the volcano

Interesting. I think the opposite. In my eyes, she looses all of her mysteriousness, which is a shame for me. More mature... yeah, i can agree on that, but she seemed to be a more interesting character before the timeskip

i love HGSS sabrinas look the most because it gives me more of a feeling of an "everyday psychic" than an "otherworldly psychic". she still looks menacing in her pose. the shadows over her eyes suggest something *mysterious* about her. she has a more laid back posture but still looks down on you as if suggesting battling you would be a breeze. she still conveys a message of the mysteries of a psychic
That's basically what I like about it, despite the complete different look she has, she mostly still has the same personality. If they gave this specific outfit for a different character, it would've barely even mattered tbh, hence why I'm glad this is her look.
I remember them talking about how Lance's new design takes the uniform of the dragon gym from galar bc he trained there in his youth
I would like to see B/W and B2/W2, and other characters who debuted in earlier gen then reappear in new gen, like Grimsley, Caitlin and Anabel

I think they’re also the only other main series games that do a time skip between games similar to what Gen 1 & 2 did.
It would be really cool to see a version of this for the Johto Characters,since we can plop in Team Rocket 2.0 in there too probably. (Also HGSS Sabrina got me actin’ unwise)

I honestly don't like Sabrina's glow-up because to me all that mystery and mysticism surrounding the psychic type aren't represented in that design, but I do think it's a great representation of her transition into acting, she shows a more dynamic side to her

It's interesting that a lot of redesigns got permanently canonized with pokemon masters EX, but some of them arent. Sabrina keeps her old design, misty is wearing an outfit closer to her anime look, etc.
Of course Sabrina gets her classic look. Imagine being a classic or anime fan and just see this random lady dressed for the summer and her name is somehow Sabrina lol.
The new Blaine looks gives me the vibe that he bought a tropical island and resurrected a bunch of extinct Pokémon via some amber 👀👀

Great overview! I'd love to see you tackle the changes between BW1 and BW2 as well. Maybe you could even take a look at the character designs in Arceus, since most characters are obviously meant to be reflective of the Sinnoh cast
Sabrina is a former Rocket member, she then start a Gym, kinda like Giovanni who were already prodigies in Pokemon training
I like to think that rather than a lot of this being the characters changing, it's just a different outfit they wear.... that characters having a different pose is just showing a different part of their personality.... so all the poses and clothes in the game just show different parts of who they are and that we get a bigger picture when we combine all of them....

in pokemon adventures even though sabrina didn't get a cameo in hgss chapter but did get an appearance in b2w2 chapter. she seems a lot more laid back than she was in her previous appearances, as well as seeming to have completely disassociated herself from team rocket and found a new and better life for her as an actress. she even helps whitley(female protagonist of the chapter, counterpart for rosa) choose which movie she should do in pokestar studios.
I would really like to see a vid about the redesigns in HGSS, some characters changed quite a bit from the original GSC (or if your Kris got straight up replaced)
Yeah, I always thought the Lyra and Kris thing was interesting. I’m at least glad we get to see them as friends in Pokémon Masters.

Oh yeah there are definitely some improvements there, but I like that they aren’t just redesigns but just older versions of the characters.

That Misty redesign is mad underrated
i have a theory about sabrina's new clothes. as her psychic powers grew she started sensing more fear from those around her. those who once enjoyed her company now kept their distance so she made a push to be more sociable. she started by dressing more "normal" then started attending more social gatherings. in b2 and w2 she even took up acting the wristlets i think are either some kind of training weights or they allow her to store and even share her gifts.
Blaine is really enjoying retirement.
For Blaine, retirement is just Round 2.
