  • A pleasant walk along the beach at Walney Island in Cumbria; rather a lot of uninformed goggling at pretty rocks, and to end the day, a delicious foraged sea beet toastie!
This is one of several videos recorded during a week-long visit to Cumbria in September 2023

I have been wonderering for some time about Eva´s strange behavior. 🐕❓ But now I think I found an explanation: It seems to me that Eva behaves like a hunting dog, the kind that´s searches for prey and barks to tell the hunter where to look. 🐇 Since you hunt for rocks , fossiles and pebbles, that´s the game she is searching for. So she barks at pebbles.

And Eva is actually good with bringing the toy back! Most dogs I've had will chase the item, get about 3/4ths of the way back to you, and then juke to the side and beckon you to chase them! Or they just drop it halfway back to you. I give them an A for effort anyways 😂

As soon as I saw the title, I thought:
'That's a heck of a walk from Dorset!'
Lovely video, as always, Mike. Always fun to see Eva (possibly the happiest little dog I have ever seen) 'rescuing' rocks, or just enjoying being. I'm not a dog person, being very allergic to them, but I do like Eva. She's probably the perfect dog for you, as she obviously is happy with life, and enjoys being out and about.
I've only been to Walney Island once, in the early 1990's, and the weather was what my late mother would have referred to as:
"Wild and Wooly." It was quite beautiful, actually.
Thankfully, you all had a nice day for it.
    Thanks again.
    Nice one. 👍👍👍
If you want to catch Razor Clams (really delicious), you'll need to bring a pack of bog standard kitchen salt. If you pour this into the burrow, the clam will emerge from it. Grab the shell, and pull gently - if you just yank it, there's always the chance that you will either pull the clam completely out of it's shell , or tear the poor thing in half, neither of which you want. Just pull steadily. It's astonishing just how strong a little creature like that can be.
Eventually, it will come free. Be careful of the shells - they can cut you, as they are quite thin. Razor clams are best cooked in their shells in the ashes of a fire. Always ensure that where you take them from is not near industry or human habitation - the same is true of most, if not all, bivalve molluscs.

It brought me right back to being a boy with my father. Dad and I would go on walks for hours and he would explain about the rocks and the sea life and we would bring our dog with us too.
My father shared the same wonderful curiosity and the same calm and knowledgeable way about him as you do.
Dad passed two years ago and I hadn't cried until I watched this video. The memories came flooding back and the tears were relentless.

I keep thinking poor Eva is the world's most amazing unknown archeologist, always finding buried civilizations with her keen sense of smell, digging as far as her little legs will allow, then calling to her dad for help. Unfortunately, her father likes to play fetch, and gets distracted with rocks at the bottom of the hole, so no one will ever know what discoveries she's made. Also, where are all the people? Other than private beaches, I've never seen a beach here in the U.S. that wasn't covered with humans. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure. Take care, be well

I could look at rocks all day! There's something very satisfying and wholesome about looking at them. The variety of colours and patterns is superb!
We have a most unlikely beach near where I live. There's a big water outlet with a deep channel and mostly brown silty water. The beach is partly stones, but when they demolished nearby brick factories they just pushed them on to the beach. It's a brick collector's paradise! Also industrial lumps of stuff of nightmarish colours.

Just a few mile south of where I live, Whitehaven.
Also for razor clams around these parts, they are not so much keyhole shaped (at least not that ive ever seen in my 30 odd years of collecting them) more an slightly sunken diamond shape.
At 3:22 you walk past several holes, also they tend to sit be around the first third "up" on the beach from the low water mark.
If you time the tides correctly just as the tide is coming back in and flowing over their holes they tend to come out of the sand of their own accord and as the tide dampens the vibrations of your footsteps (which they react to) they wont sink back down and you can just pick them out of the sand.

This put me in mind of a time in my life when I had quite a lot of beet greens available to me. I would do something very similar with them. Cooked in butter with a bit of chopped onion, a splash of balsamic vinegar to add the extra liquid needed, and once it was cooked and the liquid evaporated I would pour 2 scrambled eggs over top and make a sort of omelet/frittata which I topped with parmesan. Highly recommend! Any time I see someone use an air fryer, it makes me want to own one, but there is just not enough space in my kitchen. That crunch, though!!

So many stones deposited by the Lake District glaciers. Just south of your staring point recently unearthed a 20k year old red dear skull complete with antlers. You can see the grey sedimentary soft mud spilling into the sea after storms.
The island was recently breached for the first time, literally cut in half by high tides around the barn you noted. In future Walney may become two separate islands without defence works. The local ironworks "slag bank" to the North provides the honeycomb slag. Foulney and Roa islands are worth exploring if you revisit.

Most of it was removed in the 80s to make building material for shopping malls and motorways. There is a small section left its now covered in grass and walking trails. You need to visit Roanhead beach the large fishing pools behind it are where the iron ore was extracted.

In the East Riding of Yorkshire, particularly in Flamborough and Bempton, you can find old cottages and houses which are made from tide washed rocks like the ones you have looked at in this video although much bigger.
Most of them have been painted white with, I guess, lime or something that gives the wall a level of water resistance.
Also, you mention that the grey rocks are sandstone. I have only come across "Yorkshire stone," which is a golden yellow / brown stone which, when stuck, will break in sheets. many houses and stone walls are built with it, particularly in Bradford, Skipton, and surrounding areas. When you get into Leeds and North Yorkshire like Ilkley, houses tend to be built with red brick, and the stone walls are a more blue colour.

I live on the opposite side of the bay, interesting about the stones and plants, I walk my dog on the shore and often wonder what some of the stones and plants are, now I know!

I do enjoy your videos because of the variety of topics: Interesting places to walk, plants and rocks to gather, things to cook and eat, Eva's antics and occasional treats, and of course, everybody's favourite, Weird Stuff in a Sealed Metal Container.

The nearby island of Piel has an interesting history of the 'Kings and Knights' of the island, the king being the landlord of the pub - one of 7 buildings on the island.

I've had some luck in the past honing dull holiday cottage knives on the base of a ceramic mug (the unglazed part). YMMV depending on just how dull they are!
Three days though I try to pack something vaguely sharp in the car just in case

What a lovely walk, I'd never heard of Walney Island before. It was great seeing little Eva having such a wonderful time.
Along similar lines to seabeet, I recently discovered a nursery that sells samphire plants. You grow them in containers and water with salt water. Something unusual for your garden next year, I thought I'd give it a go. If you're interested the company is called Urban Herbs, they have a TH-cam channel too.

That is a fun idea! Maybe could build some sort of hydroponic system that periodically floods and drains the container...

@@AtomicShrimp maybe you could, I just thought I'd toddle off to Eastney beach and pick up some seawater from time to time 😂

Walney Island which according to the geographical description in the rev. W. Awdry's books is the island of sodor as it is the only true island between the England mainland and the Isle of man .
Also Barrow in Furness is the town where I was born and spent my younger years.

My parents used to take us to Walney Island on our holidays in the late 80's. We stayed in a caravan and there was absolutely nothing to do apart from count cowpats and collect periwinkles, and it always poured with rain. We did get a tractor ride to Peel Island one time, but all that was there was a pub, and some old castle ruins. We made the most of it though.

I'm not sure if you know already, but Walney Island is the real life location of the fictional Island of Sodor from the Railway Series (Thomas the Tank Engine).
