Hahaha I know what you mean! It’s so hard (impossible) to say no to travel 😍 just know you’re worth the money and it’ll feel amazing when you not only get to go on the trip, you get paid too!!

Thank you so much Anung 😀 We run our business together full-time, so we live, work and travel together. I was worried we’d fight a lot but it’s actually made our relationship better! You have your partner/best friend supporting you and they know what it’s like, so it helps a lot!
The challenges come when you’ve got different ideas on how something should be done. But, we always figure it out 😀 and the other really big challenge is money. It can be stressful when you don’t book a paid job for a while! But, it always works out too.
We chose this career/way of life because we were both really sad in our office jobs 😞 we earned good money but felt really lost, unfulfilled and just sad. Doing what we love every day makes us both really happy. We get to use our talents, build a business and travel - it makes every day a great day!

Great video! Good honest info that potential or current "influencers" would like to know. I disagree on affiliate links though... display Ads, yes, I don't like them either (even though I have them on my blog) but affiliate links to a specific site or product helps both the reader and the creator simply via a link which they can choose to follow or not - a few linked words in an article is not too intrusive. Pop up Ads or links are completely different and I agree with you totally... ban them on the internet! To remove dependency on display Ads I'm working on my Patreon account with a goal to remove them from my blog once I reach a certain number of supporters. See how I go... Such good insight, Mark!! I have travel blogger friends who love affiliate programs too. I guess I've always felt if I use affiliate links I have a vested, monetary interest in the person purchasing the product and it might have an impact on my ability to be impartial. It just feels weird. But, in saying that, I don't think ads or affiliates are bad things :) Can't wait to see what you do with your Patreon and hear about how it works for you!! See you soooon :D xxx

I’m so glad it was helpful!! I still have days now where things feel overwhelming, you just gotta push through 😀 I was invited on my first international press trip (to Singapore). I guess it made me feel valued and noticed, like my blog mattered. That gave me the kick to keep working hard and get more opportunities.

ABSOLUTELY with you on not relying on one income stream. My TH-cam nosedived just before Xmas (now recovered thank the lord) but I was already teaching online plus other bits, so could rely on them.
Great to learn more, I'd love to approach brands re sponsorship, but I just don't have any experience doing this, I need to get my finger out!

Hahaha you should definitely approach brands! There are so many that would love to partner with you. I’m pretty sure I have a post on the Little Grey Box blog, under the For Bloggers - Blogging Advice sections, about pitching to brands. I’ve even got an example email in there 😀 maybe that could help?

hahahaha I have no idea what the chances are - I wouldn't know how to even measure that?! There are many brands that spend large amounts on Instagram posts, like luxury clothing brands, as one example. I speak like a professor because I've lived in this blogging world since 2012 :) we've learned a lot! If there was no internet, I'd be very relaxed :)

Hello! Thank you so much 😍🙌🏻 that’s okay, I think many people feel that way - the best way to grow your confidence is to practice. Even just filming things for the sake of practice, not sharing them. Two other little tricks of mine are that I make eye contact with the camera, speaking to it like a friend! Fascinating and informative video thanks. I guess I have a lagging question abut travel bloggers in general being able to retain their objectivity when they are semi sponsored in a partnership type deal to review an attraction or a hotel etc. I'm definitely not questioning your or any other bloggers integrity as you strike me as a frank and honest professional but I do wonder if things might look a little Rosie if you are not actually paying for it.
Just an example, I found your review of Rydges Southbank interesting but you had a very different experience there than we did in our 2 recent stays. The hotel is obviously going to make a special effort for a blogger and I wonder if such an experience is sometimes not truly representative of what the place is really like. Just a thought.
More broadly though, keep up the great work we really enjoy your high quality videos.
Hey Mark! Wow, what a thoughtful question - I'm so glad you asked it. It's something I think about a lot, to be honest. I can't answer for everyone else but happy to share some insight into what Matt and I do :)
This first thing we do is be very selective about who we work with. We always look into the brand or hotel first, for example, and we turn down a lot of work (even paid jobs) if we don't think we'll enjoy the experience, that it's not up to standard or that it would not be of value to our audience, we don't do it.
We also make it *very* clear to the brand that we will *always* be honest about our experience, whatever that is. We make sure they know they aren't paying for a positive outcome, they're paying for our time and skills - that's all.
Things don't always go perfectly and that can be good because I want to know how a hotel or brand actually respond if they mess up. I want to know how they'd treat one of our viewers who'd paid dang good money to be there! In a way, I value the things that go wrong more than the things that magically going seamlessly.
Our last fail-safe is to think about who we know that we'd recommend an experience to. Not every place is suitable to everyone so we always go through our family and friends and think, "Would I tell them to do this? Would I tell them to stay there?" Sometimes it's a place that my mum and dad would love, other times it's younger friends but if we can think of someone we know and love that we'd recommend it to, then it's up to scratch for our viewers!
I definitely hear what you're saying and it's so true! If a hotel knows we're coming, they'll be on their A-Game, right?! They roll out the red carpet, pay extra attention to things and throw in extras they may not for other guests (like wine and chocolates in the room). To be honest, I don't really know what to do about it! It's a balancing act, for sure. If we don't clear it with them and tell people we're filming ahead of time, they can get funny about it and tell us to stop. If we don't earn money, we can't keep doing what we're doing. If we do tell them, they give us the best experience possible and even if everything goes well for us, on the day a viewer visits, there could be different staff members on and they don't get the same quality of experience we did. I don't know, it's a tough one but our strategy is just to be selective, be honest and do the best we can :)
Anyway, a long reply! But, thank you again for sharing your thoughts and asking the question - I really appreciate it! It keeps us accountable and it's good to know other people are aware of that type of thing too. Thanks for the quick reply Phoebe, I did say that you guys were pros! I think you are right, there is not much else that can be done about it. I do like your approach though. I've written nearly 600 Tripadvisor reviews all around the world and like you I just try to paint a balanced picture for others. You do the same, just with a lot more finesse! BTW we are jumping on the Great Southern Brisbane to Adelaide on Monday, having done the Ghan last November. Not sure if you guys have this on your list at some point. You have a great weekend too!

Can a totally beginner blogger try to reach out to hotels to blog for them for money/free stay? Or already have to have traffic coming to your website lol. Also I have a monetized TH-cam channel so I want to create travel vids of my journey. I would hope to at least make 2k month some day for doing this stuff if I can
A great question!! I think things have changed a lot now since when blogging first started and brands are more selective about who they work with. They often have set guidelines around audience numbers. When we first started we had to pay out of our own pocket for everything we did. It kinda sucks but if a brand can’t get in front of their target market there’s really no incentive for them. That’s why it’s best to start blogging or vlogging about something you already do and love and pay for! It’s a natural, easy way to build your audience. Once you get an audience that matches their target market you can approach them. There’s no magic number, just a clear value to the brand!
