- This guy has had a rough ride. Paragon of Dark Knights across the Middle Lands, Zeid is one of the most pivotal figures in recent history but precious few know his full story given his enigmatic demeanor.
Hopefully this sets the record straight.

This took a little longer to get done than I intended because I wanted to make sure I had not gotten many major facts wrong. The problem was that SE very subtly retconned the story of the Crystal War, particularly it’s ending, when they released Wings of the Goddess. Before that expansion official lore had it that Volker defeated the Shadow Lord but in-game evidence in the later Bastok nation missions and in Wings of the Goddess runs contrary to that claim. Figuring out which tale was true was a real pain and required me to thoroughly re-watch cutscenes I had not seen for years.
Still, you probably have some lingering questions so let’s try addressing them.
*What happened to Klara?*
I honestly do not know, she completely vanishes from history after her retirement. Whether this was done by the president at her behest I also do not know, and I didn’t want to just make something up.
*What about Zeid’s comrades, apart from Volker?*
Again, I have no idea what happened to Five Moons/Galagg. He cannot be found anywhere in present day Bastok or beyond, so I can only assume he ventured overseas or was killed in action at an unspecified point. Nicolaus we can make a more accurate guess for. If you remember from the previous lore video on Scholars then you will recall that after the Crystal War the scholars were forced into exile or put to death; a grim ending. Nicolaus features in the Scholar quests and is explicitly called out as a graduate of Schultz’s school, so it stands to reason this was his fate.
*How did you know who trained Zeid?*
This required some slight digging. We know from the quest “Inheritance” for the Ground Strike skill that Zeid invented the technique after he was beaten by his mentor Werei in a duel, we see Werei wielding a great sword during the Battle of Bastok, which supports this claim. Zeid being taught by Raogrimm is easy to nail down, the interactions between them during the Shadow Lord fight in the present day confirm this. Gumbah is an easy one to confirm, as he is the only one in Bastok is one first name terms with Zeid, acting as the go-between him and the adventurer during the Dark Knight quests. Even reincarnated, Gumbah is a confidant to Zeid and we see him fighting alongside Werei in the aforementioned Battle of Bastok; so it stands to reason he also trained Zeid.
*You couldn't find a cutscene of Zeid fighting the Shadow Lord?*
Frustratingly enough... no. I looked high and low for this since it's such a talked about event but nowhere can one be found. Closest I could get was the clip you see towards the end. Really wish they had shown this even once. The Shadow Lord himself confirms that Zeid beat in one-on-one before the present day battle between them.
*Why do Galka have different names?*
I can make a good guess on this one. This likely has a real world parallel in that people who migrate to another nation can legally change their names so the natives have an easier time addressing them.
*Is Zeid the Galka Batman?*
Not really, as Batman does not kill people... at least not in true canon. He is a vigilante with some similarity beyond that though, I doubt this was a basis of his character.
A year or more late, but on the topic of Galka naming conventions: they have their cultural names and a Hume-given name that's easier for them to pronounce, hence Galagg/Bright Moon.
The game gives the impression that the "given" names are allusion to real-world slave names, especially with the cultural issues that plague Bastok.
Vana'diel tribune has an "in-universe" from a slightly aloof author, but I think some early, early Bastok story lines allude to ask much.

glad you made this, many dont do the bastok WoTG quest line. I think they miss a lot of this lore because of that. And it is one of the coolest bits of lore out there. That said, i think the people around Zeid were a bit too forgiving at times lol.
Thank you for this - hard to believe it took so long for a video about a major XI character to be made, and it turned out great.
If anything, I'm almost positive the name is supposed to be pronounced "zide", as heard in voiced cutscenes videos Famitsu once had on their channel but then made private.

Cross the Multiverse I always said it like "zaid"...... believe I was taught "ei" makes an "a" sound where a "ie" makes an "e" sound.

Another way to check would be to look for the katakana version of the name in Japanese media, which can also be helpful.

Run, I love your videos and am completely enamored by the lore. Just one thing that bothers me though. It’s your pronunciation of Bastok. According the SE, in the game guide, the correction pronunciation is Bastook. It’s just a little niggle, but if we don’t catch it early enough you’ll keep making the same mistake.
Jub huh... Bastook only sounds like that if it’s spelt like that, as two O indicates an emphasis. Odd how they came to that conclusion
