This video deserves a lot more views. I'm having a hard time finding information about this subject and your video is shedding light on all sides!
After talking to a playlist curator, he told me that if a playlist is consistent in genre, it'll do better. That means that his playlist would suffer from adding one of my songs if I'm tagged as "fantasy" and his playlist is all "pagan folk", even if that one song I'd like him to add is in fact pagan folk. He advised me to make a separate project (band/artist name) for whenever I try a new genre.
On the other hand, there is my artist name that I've built a small audience for. I want to grow that audience, yet if I release songs in a totally different genre, what will that do to my audience?
It's a really hard question to answer whether or not to have multiple artist names. I've changed my name to Bart the Bard, it was Bart Zeal, because it fits 80% of the stuff I make a lot better. But I can't just change my Spotify name, so I'll have to start a new artist account there. With 0 followers.
I figure it's best to do that and then put those outlying songs, as far as genre is concerned, on my main Bart Zeal channel. Which then made me wonder if I should make even a bigger distinction, because Ive made sci-fi, cowboy, fantasy, and pagan folk music. Do I need 4 artists names? Will that negatively impact my current single artist name?
    It's a really tough one!

great video. I also hava various distinct projects and names and I dont have the time to take care of all the social platforms.

Yeah, it's overwhelming. I feel like it's better to just have one primary social account on your platforms of choice and then post stuff about your side projects on there.

@@freshlysunlit The problem is that some people who take one of the genres you do very seriously will be very critical when they see you doing another project in a genre they don't take seriously. Consequently, they will stop supporting you. Thank you.

I appreciate this approach being light on the business side of things, emphasizing the creative. I think about this a lot myself and have recently concluded that I only need different project names if they’re intended for more specific music communities. I think some ppl get away with a single name from their cult of personality, while others struggle to experiment and branch out under the same name

great perspective! it's something I've thought about way too much 😅 different names for different communities makes sense. The cult of personality is definitely a real thing too. Still really considering making another for my stuff with vocals 🤔

Thank you so much for this perspective. I was so torn between my hard EDM style and recently Lofi calm asf vibes. My stage name is more electronic and doesn't really suit the branding of the EDM. Your video has helped me make a decision to make an alias 😌♥️

The way I would go about it is to pick multiple artist names but have only one social media name for all of them.

That sounds like a good solution!

I had so much thought for this issue long time ago about the different names and styles and in the end i decided that whatever i make as music producer it will be under just one name... and i really make ALL kind of electronic music depending on my mood :)

I haven't finished the video yet, but it's a provocative question. Halcyon is pronounced Hal-see-on. 🤘
Edit: Bruh...SO trippy as the first video I ever saw from you was the one you're talking about! I was feeling some glitches in the matrix, but you saved me a mild case of the willys.

@@freshlysunlit Not sure when you last looked at the video about choosing an artist name, but I think you bring up some similar points. I felt like I had "almost" already been there. There might also be a new strain involved...😁

It wouldn't matter except the ecosystem, payment demands and monetization requirements that the platforms force upon us. So, I play three different instruments. Currently, my website is just my actual name + the word "Jazz." That isn't unique and won't draw followers on YT (because I'm not famous), but seems necessary as a "one stop." Note that Taylor Swift doesn't have this problem! We, as artists, are selling OURSELVES. All this "branding" stuff is anathema to an artist's soul, but commerce demands it.
It's a quandary, for sure! I'm trying to grow my YT channel, and I'm getting more views with a fake name. But do I want that fake name to be "me"? Lady Gaga isn't her real name (Madonna is). Since my fake name has "sax" in it (no, not "Jeff Sax" like a lot of the kids are doing; I'm older), that isn't great for my piano project! And using my real name wont' sell the piano project either. So far, I'm just using the fake sax name in the title, thumbnail and description, not my YT channel name.

Yeah, it's that artist dilemma of self-expression vs playing the marketing/branding/advertising game in order to make a buck. The thing is, art and self-expression is part of what it means to be human, so selling it in any way can feel a bit off.
It's cool that some people can make a living off their art, but it's literally not possible for everyone who makes art to do that. And that's ok, because art is more important than money, and I'd rather have the freedom to create than feel bogged down by trying to sell myself.
All that to say, use a name that you want to use, even if it isn't the most marketable. And make the music you want to make, even if it's not popular.
      Keep playing that sax bro!

@@freshlysunlit Thanks, I have a couple of "stage names" and a couple of "You Tube Channel Names" that I like. I guess my issue is deciding on which ONE of them to "market." I may try changing my YT channel name to one of them to see if it bears fruit.

@@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton It's tough. I've been in the same dilemma, had a bunch of different ideas for names over the years. I finally decided to just go with one and not overthink it. I found it deciding on a name was holding me back from actually making music and releasing stuff.

@@freshlysunlit Yeah the problem is the TH-cam channel names I like are not really the artist names that will fly in the stuck-up Jazz world. Is "FreshlySunlit" your stage name for live performances?
