A lot of these types of nightlights do not actually ( power wise ) turn off ... the daylight sensor just shorts out the LED lamp , causing it to go out , but the unit is still drawing the same ( small ) power from the socket ... the manufacturer would find it simpler to just leave it running all day and night , ( this would reduce the component count ! ) ... a VERY simple nightlight can be made from TWO ! LEDs wired in antiphase , one junction connected to mains neutral .. the other junction connected to a 100 nF MAINS 230 VOLT AC RATED capacitor , and a resistor ( 470 Ω ? ) in series , the free end of the resistor connected to mains live ... USA constructors might need a 150 nF capacitor , for 115 volts ( ? ) , also a transparent box to put it in ! ! ... this is a well ( tried - n - tested ) unit ........ DAVE™🛑
