  • When was the last time you did a #30stemchallenge ? Have you ever done a #30stemchallenge? Well this might be the weekend to start. We've had horrible wind and rain and weather here in Somerset and my cut flower season officially finished a fortnight ago so what can I find in the garden for my clients today? Well this might be quite extreme #30stemchallenge but it's fun x enjoy! xxx

I’ve read about the language of flowers and now I am learning the language of flower farmers. For example, twiggery pokery for curly willow and the like. Crane from Cranery Gardens calls the twinkly bits like tiny filler flowers and grasses ‘kadooka deek’. As for your sugar maple, the autumn foliage fills my heart with delight. Being a transplanted Yank, I confess the only thing I miss about living in the US is the fall leaf peeping tours along the Eastern Seaboard. To get my foliage fix I have filled my Devon garden with acers, smoke bushes, and red burning bushes. What the world needs now is more twiggery pokery. Gorgeous! X

Love the term triggery pokery, such fun! Who would have thought bare twigs could be so beautiful among a green arrangement. So impressed with everything you arrange. !

It should have read twiggery pokery, but the prescriptive text decided otherwise!

Hello Georgie, one of my favorite fall accents is quaking oat grass. I grow it and in the fall the seed heads on the stem look like a little fishing pole with fish dangling from the end. When the temps drop it turns a beautiful golden burnished color. It also has beautiful movement.

You'd think by now I would never doubt you when you say you can make something look beautiful. But I did, and once again, you proved me wrong. The twiggery pokery was really nice and the one with the dahlia's ---really lovely. Loved their colours especially.

You have definitely had an influence upon me Georgie. I was admiring a bouquet the other day and thinking in my mind, “surely they could have got more stems in that vase.” 😂. TeresaSue

Gotta love some twiggery pokery, thats where the magic lives. Im looking at fantasy chrysanthemums and wandering if I could grow some for wedding and events, they really do tickle my pickle, especially the kokka bunmi. Ps nice music 😊

I've learned so much from you Georgie. I will try this month to send you some trailing nasturtium seeds from Ontario, Canada - they are not susceptible to black aphids and their stems turn magnificent creams and pink in late summer to fall.

thank you so much for the thought but I think bio security means please don't send seeds from Ontario. xxx

This is the first year that I can do your 30 stem challenge, no challenge! My garden is FULL! Dahlias, hydrangeas, chocolate cosmos ❤️ echinacea, lavender, cosmos, amaranth, heuchera, the odd rose. Best October ever. Sorry you had such trouble finding damage on the dahlias 😉. Herbs are perfect for a "scenterpiece".

I ❤️ the movement and whimsy you achieved by stripping the leaves off the willow! I need some of that. Is it a particular variety? The arrangements are so beautiful. I have a thornless climbing Zephirine Drouhin rose that I need to prune so people can get up my porch. I wouldn’t have thought to make an arrangement of the trimmings but now I will. I only wish my sun king aralias were large enough to cut to add to it, but I can find something else after this inspiration. Thank you!
