I saw him open up for Ben Folds in Detroit. I was able to meet him backstage and asked if he would play this song on his guitar- he did! A genuine and nice fella!
Good heavens. The original McDreamy right here. And he still wears the crown ❤️ his wife is a lucky lady. More importantly (sorta), this was my introduction to his mastery of chord structure and melody. I’ve been one of his subjects ever since.
Got to get him to sign my arm at a concert when he was just opening for Ben folds and a piano back in like ‘03 I get all blushy when people think it’s my boyfriend’s name. Except that it is in cursive and drunk people always say “Duncan SHREK??” Uncultured swine lol
I worked at a supermarket in the summer and fall of 1997. They used to play this song over the sound system almost every day. I never knew the title or artist until I looked it up just now. Good song.
@@Music-tk5oq I never understood why. This was played on AA (Adult Alternative) stations quite a bit. Before I had my own show, I worked on air at an AA station, and would use any excuse to play this. It was usually requested at least once per night on weekends. I'd play it even if it wasn't requested, or on the playlist. I would ALWAYS get calls after playing it, asking me who/what was just on. This is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time.
Duncan's first breakout hit "Barely Breathing" came out & got radio airplay during winter/spring 1997. This was his follwup hit which got radio airplay summer/fall '97. He was classified as a 1 hit wonder with the above mentioned breakout hit which hit #16 in billboard & this was a non charted single
Same hear, it was a beautiful song that was a good soundtrack for 1997. I looked up his song Barely Breathing and this was also recommended. I used to hear this song in Flagstaff Arizona all the time and it go's well with the beautiful backdrop.
I just adore this song! It still has the ability to enchant me even after all this time! Thats the mark of a truly timeless classic. Thank you so much duncan for such a wonderful treasure!
I used to be addicted to this album WAY back in the late 90's. Every night I'd come home, clean, light the yummy smelling candles, lay on the couch and listen to the entire Duncan Sheik album beginning to end. Oh, how my roommate HATED my taste in music! His taste still sucks and I still love Duncan, his music just NEVER gets OLD!
I just purchased tickets to see / hear Duncan perform some of his NEW material with the San Francisco Symphony in April!! ... I had the pleasure to meet Duncan on two occasions - opening for Shawn Colvin in Berkeley, CA, and performing a free concert on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills - and each time he was most gracious to, and so friendly with, all of his adoring Fans! What a NICE man, and a GREAT talent!! ... Good Karma always follows Good People!!.
This has a sad tone to it but I always feel better after hearing it. It's sad but it makes me happy... can't really explain it but that's why it's a GREAT song.
Me to life was much better with our social media back in the 90s we actually talk to each other and interact we had people in front of us to talk to it was a good time
One of my favorites...love what the guitarist is doing with the hammer-ons and slides...and then there are those mirrors...the song really captures the feeling of "the one who got away" "didn't understand, wasn't ready" ...very dreamy.
LOL never heard this before today and heard while on hold to order some arthritis medicine...LOL Just never know where you are going to hear an awesome tune.
Yes, they do - eat their own for breakfast, that is. Duncan went on to score Broadway musicals. He is an award winning artist. I miss hearing him on the radio, though. This is one of my all time favorite pieces. I posted earlier that it's hauntingly beautiful.
One of the most stylish music videos that came out from that time, and his effortlessly beautiful voice was undeservingly underrated... God I miss the 90s! And I fell in love with him all over again...
I wrote as much in another thread. I even used the word, "underrated." He has been nominated for, and won several awards, incl. 2 Tony Awards, a Drama Desk, and a Grammy for "Spring Awakening," and has been nominated for, and won a few others.
I first bought this album in 1996 when I was 19. I still listen to it in 2018, considering I'm 41 now. By the way, does anybody know where to get this version again? I had it when I purchased the single years ago but lost it. It's not on the album either.
I shared this video with my 19 year old daughter a few weeks ago - I haven't heard her opinion yet but we both have "Barely Breathing", our song by him in our playlists (YT for me)/ iPod for her.
@MNsizzle11 Can't agree more. I found Duncan was extremely talented and I was glad that I got to be 'introduced' to this song and back album in 1997. Especially this song, my tears burst out when I first played it not because I had had any personal experience about what he sang in the lyrics but the music was so beautiful and romantically haunting. God bless Duncan.
this song stopped time and made a dimension own it's own, probably that is why that time was decade of blessed creativity among artist. so natural non toxic touch to music. (the're good arranging that acoustic)
I used to have this album on cd & played it every day, learned all the songs & harmonized with him. I miss this stuff. Barely breathing was my favorite. thank you for this. Im so frustrated & angry today. I need something to calm my nerves. Duncan Sheik is doing the job for me. 8-17-20
A musician friend of mine (who is also an incredible archivist and fan of Steven Stills) turned me on to Duncan Sheik and now I can't let the guy go. No flash in the pan gimmickry, outrageous styling and clothes can make music like this. He uses none of that and still rings through to anyone looking hard enough to find the real thing.
In my top ten albums. And that’s saying a lot since I was spoon fed on Beatles era 60s/70s. But in my ❤, this record? It touches me and brings back memories. So many memories. Loves won. Loves lost. So many.
I just love hearing this song. The beginning guitar intro, always reminds me of being in an empty room and playing guitar. It's got that echo to it .so cool sounding
I've had this the live version of this song on my iTunes for I dont know how long and I just now listening to it entirely. Words cant describe how good he is
You know your old when this song is being played over the grocery store speakers and you know every word like it just came out 10 weeks ago... #GroceryStoreJams
I first heard this song late one night on the radio while driving my truck and it just bit me, so i went out the following weekend and bought an EP with 3 songs on it by this guy, little did i know at the time but those 3 songs would come to represent lots of great memories from the early naughties, whenever i hear this i'm straight back there in my mind. great song....
This song brought me back to the 90’s. Happier, simpler times.
This tune should have at least 120 million views.
This song doesn’t receive the credit that it deserves, it’s one hell of a track.
Real 🙂🤪

Detroit❤️❤️❤️
I was at that show too! I also was at the same backstage event!

This song and Barely Breathing, helped me get through some of the hardest part of my life in 1997. Thank you Duncan.
I love that guy. I’m 45 and his music was my high school internal soundtrack.
Definitley the most underrated song writer.
Definitely not.
I'm so glad I was born early enough in the 80's to remember the entire decade of the 90's. What a great era that was
U bet it was
I can honestly say that I believe Duncan Sheik produces music of the highest quality.
🙂
I remain convinced this is one of the best Duncan!!! still enjoying in 2024 on repeat ❤
I worked at a supermarket in the summer and fall of 1997. They used to play this song over the sound system almost every day. I never knew the title or artist until I looked it up just now. Good song.
It also got a lot of radio airplay at the time but didn't make the hot 100 chart

It was kind of like the followup tune 2 Duncan's mega breakout hit "Barely Breathing" which made him a 1 hit wonder..

Every song on this album was great. I bought it when it was first released. I miss the 90s.
Ditto!
I didnt appreciate rock alternative in the 90s barely breathing. Was tattooed in my brain. Recently i heard the song in my head.. Now i bang it often
Agree!
Last decade of really good music~ 🎶🎤
@@joane5777 Nah, there is still good music being made.
Saw him perform at the Hard Rock San Francisco 1997! The 90's was prob the best decade ever!
This entire album is amazing. Perfect for long rides on the highway ❤
The woman is a metaphor for Happiness. Wonderful song.
Love Duncan Shiek! These are songs that stay with you for life. I remember when I first listened to this song in the late 90s. Just beautiful.
My favorite Duncan song...most underrated singer/songwriter.
"Sometimes the more you wonder why
The worse it seems to get"
this is true i love duncan sheik i can listen to him all day
The darkness truly comes, and the darkness goes. Happiness just looks different sometimes.
I could listen to this album from start to end on repeat over and over.
Im about to put the CD in the car
The 90's music had a groove that was unique in itself.
Well put.
Love this CD to death. This is my favorite version. 1997 to 1999 music was crazy!!
Before The Government Took Away Iodine And Added Toxic Chemicals, It Wasn't The Years In The 90's, It Was The Power The People Still Had Inside Them
ditto... I've craved this cd like food this pregnancy!

The sliding guitar is incredible.
Reminds me of some of Steven Wilson's songs
sounds wonderful. 8-17-20
I just adore this song! It still has the ability to enchant me even after all this time! Thats the mark of a truly timeless classic. Thank you so much duncan for such a wonderful treasure!
Such a completely underrated artist, but protected from the devil's fame machine.
He wrote two hit songs and then wrote the music for three kick ass musicals. All while avoiding the fame machine
Mad respect
Couldn't have been said any better.
Sounds like a dumbass
I got you and I understand. I saw the Hollywood entertainment business from the inside as a lower level employee for 3 years.

I truly love this song. It is poetic and heartfelt. It is one of my all time favorite tunes. Thank you so much for posting it.
A deep song. Duncan's a genius.
His poetry is divinely inspired.
So beautifully done and composed. It's a song that will haunt me forever with it's plaintive beauty...
Its sweet sadness.
God, I miss THIS version of Duncan. What an amazing time. What an amazing album.
Been a Fan of Duncan Sheik for 25+ Years; I never knew he had a Music Video for "She Runs Away" - WOW!

Ahhh, the '90's.....good music, good times. I always liked him, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and the Gin Blossoms.
simply don't make music this good anymore.
Good stuff
Add Hootie too:)
The Gin Blossoms were inspired by pain too. I loved it all.
Every five years I remember this album and it still sounds good. This sounds like a different mix than the album
I think so, too. I remember strings more beautiful near the end.
Yes, the album version is more relaxed than this.
I think this is the best opening song to an album, ever.
Duncan Sheik is fantastic. love the music.
I saw Duncan sheik open for Barenaked ladies in 1998. Good show
I loved Barely Breathing...but how did this one also not explode in views???
I don't know, it was his follow up. I loved it like it was my own.
@@DebNKY It's one of those songs that cuts to the core.

Great album.
Came back to hear some wicked sliding guitar... I feel better now.
Great album! Still love letting this album ride!
This is the composer of the truly great music from Broadway's SPRING AWAKENING!
this guy is awesome
Sheik's first record was incredible.
The second one was great too.
After that I lost track of him.

Fantastic song and video. I feel wonderfully melancholy at the moment. This song swims in it in a good way.
So young, but so talented already.
He is as beautiful as his music! Been listening for years but never thought to check out his videos till tonight!
I adore this entire CD. Have loved you my friend since day one. Perfect.
