It's not a sequencer It's a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ using its marimba repeat feature. The modal approach used for the synthesizer track was inspired by the work of minimalist composer Terry Riley.
Pete Townshend, a member of The Who, was one of the first and most creative users of synthesizers in rock. He used the ARP 2500 on the song "Won't Get Fooled Again" from the album Who's Next.

Whatever your feelings about the song itself, it has to be acknowledged that it is one of the most bizarrely original, out of nowhere, songs ever. This one along with others on the album has Pete doing things with synthesizers and sequencers that nobody was doing at the time. This was in middle of one of those extraordinary hot creative streaks true geniuses have from time to time that ran from Tommy through Quadrophenia.

Couldn't agree more. Right underneath The Beatles as far as I'm concerned. A fantastic - and varied catalog. Especially their work up to this point (1971), although there's great stuff right up to 1978, when Keith Moon died. Also: greatest live act in rock. I saw the "Who's Next" tour at Cobo Hall in Detroit. One thing for which The Who were famous was playing really LOUD!!. It was a fabulous concert, not only the music, but also the stage antics of the band, put together to entertain fans in those arenas seated way up in the back of the balcony at the rear of the arena. Which was where I was seated. I think it was a third balcony. It was a Friday or Saturday concert, and my hearing didn't return to anything near normal until the following Wednesday. You not only heard the music of The Who back then, you felt it in your chest, and in the vibrations of the floor underneath your feet.

A comment about this song. In '72 I went to see ELP at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh and there was a delay in them coming on. They had a problem with Keith's Hammond which was understandable as he would punish that thing, stab it with knives, knock it over ...etc. While the techs were working of course they played the music of the time and this one they played. I don't remember any other songs in the playlist but this one. So when I hear Baba I'm 18 and waiting with nervous anticipation my favorite band at the time.

Yeah, and there was a bizarre story behind it. Townsend thought that you might be able to "hear" people's souls if you fed various data (such as astrological charts) into a computer controlling a synth. The results for two people he admired (named Baba and Reily) sounded remarkably similar, and that was the foundation of the song's intro. They added the "O" because they thought the violin at the end sounded Irish lol

When you listen to music from this age remember these masterpieces were made with stone tools.
    No computers.
    Very few tracks.
    No automation.
As creative as the music was, to get these results you had to be brilliant in the studio. Because there were fewer studio tricks you also had to be a way better musician than now.

I probably mentioned this when Nick reacted to this song before, but it's worth repeating for Alexia.
After 9/11, Paul McCartney organized a concert for New York City to benefit the Robin Hood society, and as a thank you to all the First Responders, who were admitted free and given free beer. The Who were the first to say yes, and at the concert on October 20th 2001, they played a 30-minute set that was terrific. It turned out to be the last time they would perform with John Entwistle, their bass player, as he passed away in 2002.
In 2008, The Who received the Kennedy Center Award, which was the first time the award was given to a musical group. Four of their songs were performed by famous artists, the last being "Baba O'Riley", performed by Rob Thomas. As the Teenage Wasteland section began, the back of the stage opened to a large group of New York City firefighters and police officers singing "teenage wasteland, it's only teenage wasteland," and Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry were moved to tears. It was beautiful.
I'm glad Lex got to hear this one with headphones, but sometime, (maybe when the neighbors aren't around!) put on this one and "Won't Get Fooled Again" and crank it up for the full effect of these epic Brit rockers!!

The Who are a phenomenal band with an amazing back catalogue. Mod music is often overlooked as a genre and has a lot to offer, in particular The Jam as a Mod/Punk band and Paul Weller on his own who was the lead singer. See Me, Feel Me is one of my Who favourites and the Woodstock live version is brilliant.

As a teen in the 70s I could never bring myself to like The Who. Townshend cannot resist adding distracting bridges to all his songs, most of which are really good otherwise. Or so I thought until I heard Eminence Front, which is perhaps the best rock song of the 80s. It's one of my all time favorites and there's no distracting bridge in the middle. I've been a fan of The Who since then, distracting bridges and all.

Hugh Laurie loves Van Halen as well, he plays jazz piano and guitar plus sings pretty damn good.

Most of the songs were for a project called Lifehouse which Pete Townsend shelved. Who’s Next is a fantastic album and these were the songs that were potentially thrown away!

No one has ever sounded like the Who. Very much an original sounding band. They had influences on punk bands with they're aggressive style and angst. Easily a top 10 band of all time.

On January 28, 2008 when we launched Rock 100.5 in Atlanta, THIS was the song we chose to play first...As you said, "Epic, an anthem, defined a generation"...As for Hugh Laurie (Dr. House"), he is an amazingly talented musician...He not only sings, he also plays piano, guitar, harmonica, drums, and saxophone!

I saw The Who live at Madison Square Garden back in 1972. They played four shows in a row that week. The first night (I found this out later) they had a lot of sound problems and the band was pissed. I was there the second night, which happened to be there 10th anniversary as a band. It was by far the best concert I have ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of concerts over the years. The performance, the sound, everything was perfect!!

I can understand you getting overwhelmed by Quadrophenia, it is an epic album with so much going on before you even get to the massive album closer Love Reign O’er Me which for me is one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded. I would’ve suggested starting with The Real Me where you will hear some amazing bass playing by Roger Entwistle and then move straight to the album closer. Quadrophenia really needs patience because it really rewards so much.

I also agree with the other two Letter B songs off one of my very favorite albums, Who's Next....Bargain and Behind Blue Eyes. Other popular songs include Who Are You and some fun stuff from Tommy like Listening To You; Amazing Journey or Eyesight to the Blind. One of the most surprising thing about the band is how many very different sounding songs and genre you can find in their catalog that are all very easily identifiable as the Who thanks to the uniqueness of each member and their playing style...the exceptions only after we lost Keith Moon in 1978 and perhaps when Pete or John sing lead. Glad you changed your mind!!! They are one of the most influential rock bands and it seems like they were ahead of their time; but the truth is...their music is timeless as far as I can tell. Love seeing young people discovering and enjoying the only bands and songs I consider music...😂😂😂 Gosh, I sound ancient!!! 😂😂😂😂

Lighthouse what's meant to be Pete Townshend second rock opera. Theme being the philosophy of townsend's guru Baba O'Riley. The rest of the band could not make sense of it,, so it was abandoned.
The fiddle player is Dave arbus of East of Eden.
By the way, the movie quadrophenia is better play the album about Mods in Brighton.
