    Saw a Mustang vs Mini Cooper duel in New Zealand in the 60s. The track had enough bends in it to give the mini a fair chance. Thrilling race!

    Good to see the American 'tanks' doing so well against the sprightly quick handling british machines. Close racing for two cars built for polar opposite purposes. Wide lane cruising vs. Tiny city/country lanes.

      Yes...NASCAR in the 60's was the real stripped down souped up model of the car racing. What won on Sunday is what sold Monday. It was so cool
      Now it's tubular chassis and a potato fiberglass body that isn't even shaped like what it's trying to present itself as.

    I used to go to Croft Aerodrome many years ago, and watch this sort of racing. The best were the formula libre class, from mini to cobra all on the track together. Those cobras passed everything on the straights and everything passed the cobras on the bends, marvellous!

    So many memories..... as a nipper in the 70s (50 this month) my grandad use to pick me up from junior school at dinner time in a Mk1 Lotus Cortina to get me to grans for dinner and then back to school for afternoon lessons.. My grandad would have been roughly the same age then as I am now.... His car was sold after he passed away in 1983 and it was his daily driver right up until he died...

    Takes me back. Used to race a Lotus Cortina at circuits in the north of England and met those big bangers, the Galaxies from time to time. They went like stink on the straights but were slow in the corners and had to brake early.
    They were tough to get past mostly because they tool up too much road on smaller circuits!

    Beautiful, different cars different strengths/ weaknesses. The most nail biting racing I've seen is vespers racing the the short circuit at pukekohe in the 80s. Everyman had a chance and put it all on the line

    Damn, that brings back memories. One has to admit that the huge Ford Galaxie is handling well. Of course having that 7 liter, 427 cubic inch engine doesn't hurt in getting it around the course.

      @@mlow5428 It's a 427 R Code (lightweight) Galaxie which raced frequently in England against Jaguar Sedans, Minis, Cortinas and the like. It was over 400 lbs lighter than the stock Galaxie with fiberglass hood, door panels, bumpers and I believe, plexiglass windows. While it was obviously faster on the straights, it suffered from inadequate brakes and tire wear from its still excess weight.

    So Cool! one of the biggest, and one of the smallest Fords battling through the twisties!
    Even with both cars fully track prepped it's like a Boeing 767 against a P-51 Mustang.

    I miss my Cortina. She was 66 GT. Had to sell her when my mom went into a coma to help pay the bills. It was such a fun car to drive.

    I wonder what the hp/torque to body weight is in the two cars highlighted? The Cortina certainly came into the corners fast, breaking later than the big beautiful Ford. "There's no replacement for displacement." Well it still has a nice ring to it. Someone mentioned putting these two on a big oval. That sounds like sour grapes. I'm pretty sure everyone understood the type of racing they would be doing that day. and what fun to watch!

    I had a few mk 1 cortina's changing engine's gearboxes, diffs all in the pursuit of speed. Had a galaxy 500 convertible bloke took me for a test run hit the power hood button and I couldn't give him 600 sovs quick enough🤣 it rolled about like like a snooker ball but I thought I was the dog's bollox😣

    One of the reasons why I'm such a giant fan of Ford. They made cars that were fundamentally quite different in EU and US. Yes, the Cortina had a Lotus flavor but you know what I mean, one other example, Crown Vic vs Ka came to my mind watching this, very, very different cars, yet they can rival each other quite nicely on track.

    BIG America on the track! I drove a 63 galaxie for 15 years there great cars! Today i daily drive a 67 impala but my 63 galaxies 390 drove me from the east coast to the west coast n back!

    Ford vs Ford . Awesome !!! The little Cortnia ( punching WAY above his weight ) won by dancing on his nimble feet , and throwing perfectly timed jabs . The big Galaxie , swinging wildly on the straights , went down to a lighter opponent using surer footwork . ...........

    That Galaxie was quite small compared to our 70s cars here in America. If they had a 71
    Cadillac Series 75, 76 Royal Monaco, or 75 LTD on that track, it'd take up the whole road and no one would be able to pass!

      @Scott Kraft - The '63 Galaxie was a FULL SIZE American car from 1958 to 1974. Same with the Chevy impala, Dodge Coronet, etc.
