@painterofmusic Well... it is a hospital from which Casey managed to elope twice :) ... I don't know what else to say about the quality of care. Isn't anyone doing 15 minute checks or anything?
I knew as soon as Carol said she leaving, and started talking about the great future she had, she was gonna die. It always happens in these movies. And as soon as she shut the door, I thought, yep, she's gonna kill herself.
That was such a sad scene. I had (still do) the impression that Carol didn't want to leave the hospital. To face the unknown. 😔😢 I often wonder if that's similar with depression (what I have). A lot of times, I wish I was on disability, so I wouldn't have to leave the house. Pretty sad, but I really consider myself a homebody and consider home to be a sanctuary.
In a general medical hospital, there aren't searches of belongings. Doors aren't locked. People make bad choices- and even with adequate care (as described by licensing agencies) things happen. YES, as an RN, I checked on patients frequently.... it only takes a few seconds for someone to OD between 'rounds', and if they take enough, there's not much to be done- especially if they're already in bad shape. :(
they would never let that happen in any hospital i've been in, it would be something that got youin serious trouble, they do room searches and such for contraband ED stuff
Poor Carol. She must be so lonely. The way she uses her "anorexic expertise" to make friends with Casey(?) makes me feel so sorry for her. And that goodbye almost made me cry, with Carol having decided to kill herself but obviously not being able to tell. ;_;
Depends on the type of hospital. Most general hospitals where someone in the physical condition portrayed in the movie would be, don't have locked doors. Psych hospitals on the other hand, do. Treatment centers may have a combination of both locked and unlocked units. I've been an RN in all types. :)
Friends like these are dangerous. I had one once upon a time, but she didn't die our relationship died instead & we never saw each other again which in retrospect was for the best really. We were poison to each other & if my mum had known it she would have blown her top.
Poor Carol. From the look on her face when Casey left and as how she starts to cry as she was packing, I knew she was going to kill herself. Guess when some people constantly battle illness or anything that's stressful for that long to the point where they can't deal with it anymore, something like what happened to her seems like a solution. So sad. :(
Yep.... it is. However, in some situations, the staff is way more involved in the crisis, and not who is watching; ideally there are staff who are assigned "crowd control"- but if it's between the person dying and someone watching- the dying person gets the attention... AND, this is a MOVIE !!! :)
I think she's crying because she made up her mind to finally give up, and commit suicide. It's such an unfortunate thing. Many people put on a "happy" act so that they do not give people the impression that they are suicidal...then alone, they cry. I think that is what happened with Carol.
No wonder Carol is super-thin. Smoking not only causes horrible damage lung and heart health, but it also causes loss of appetite. (That's why you'll see a lot of models smoking.)
If you've seen the dozens of TV movies from the 1980s and Very Special Episodes of Family Ties, Facts of Life, Growing Pains, etc. you'll know that the anorexic (alcoholic/drug addict/runaway/pregnant) friend always dies so the main character can realize she's spiraling down the path of no return. :)
It's unrealistic yes, but it was a central line that was going directly to her heart. Chances of developing a serious arrhythmia are much more realistic. This could have caused her to collapse.
@Whitzerd no the reason bulimics tend to be normal weight or put on weight is because vomiting causes dehydration so that then body will hold onto all liquids a person drinks -> this causes water weight gain. Another reason is that some bulimics tend to eat normally in front of others so they won't lose any weight.
Oh man. I knew Casey's friend was going to kill herself or something the way she was talking to Casey and just from the look on her face after Casey left. Poor girl.
@Whitzerd Yes but she was described as having bulimia and anorexia. I am sick with this and it basically consists having all the symptoms of bulimia (binging and purging) but with failure to maintain or meet 85% of a minimum body weight for my height. why some people put on weight and some people lose weight with bulimia, I have no idea. I guess it all depends on the individual.
I think because she knows she'll get out but soon she'd be back in and she probably feels guilty or encouraging that lifestyle for the little girl. she might have been depressed too when people are depressed some can hide it very well. but after that she took a bunch of pills and died. so yea it probably had something to do with that.
@PeaceNdLovee I had black thick hair to my butt, and when these obsessions with being slim took contole over me I shaved it off, I looked like a cancer patient, i lost two pounds
@Whitzerd not always true thou - Some people do loose A LOT through bulimia- it's not that it doens't happen it's jus not a guarantee not jus that the girl ends up killing herself- so how can it make it look like bulimia is the answer!!!!!!
@painterofmusic In real life they wouldnt have let them watch, at least they arent supposed to. Unless they did it to show them what can happen but still it isnt right to do that
I think they are thin... and they are thinner than at the begining of the video... I was fatter than that when i had problems, although people say i wasn,t, i m sure i was
how come the hospital personnel just let Casey stand there watching her friend, dead? :o That's awful, and very unprofessional. I think that's a mistake in the script.
real smart leaving her alone when they knew the two girls were friends
Girl has to stop escaping when it's raining
@painterofmusic Remember that this was in 1981 and knowledge on how to treat anorexia and bulimia was still fairly new.
I seriously don't understand how this hospital keeps letting her get out so easily!?
So she's storing up binge food when she knows she's being released the next morning?
"you still a beginner" if someone tell me that I would feel like I need to lose even more and be like that for years
That’s the point
Somnetimes, eating disorder patients feel safe in the hospital...or that they finally belong some place...and it's hard for them to leave.

I love how she can just leave whenever she wants lol
That hospital doesn’t have great security
That scream.. LOL.
they would never let that happen in any hospital i've been in, it would be something that got youin serious trouble, they do room searches and such for contraband ED stuff
How do you know? They discharge people all the time when they really shouldn't. Insurance decides not to pay b/c you're stable.
The friend looks like a young version of Bob Dylan... xD

G-d bless you always for all that you're doing in the healing profession.

Not in the early 80s, though. Eating disorders were new, at least to the general public.
I think she's crying because she made up her mind to finally give up, and commit suicide. It's such an unfortunate thing. Many people put on a "happy" act so that they do not give people the impression that they are suicidal...then alone, they cry. I think that is what happened with Carol.
This is the part of the video (so far) that has hurt me the most. Its a challenge watching it. My best friend is in that state and i'm so scared.
sounds like a great explanation.
No wonder Carol is super-thin. Smoking not only causes horrible damage lung and heart health, but it also causes loss of appetite. (That's why you'll see a lot of models smoking.)
@painterofmusic i used to wanna look perfect til i got sick now im happy just the way i am.
How come they left her with street clothes after she tried to escape the first time?
It's unrealistic yes, but it was a central line that was going directly to her heart. Chances of developing a serious arrhythmia are much more realistic. This could have caused her to collapse.
@Whitzerd Do you really think there's only one type of bulimia? Shows how much you know.
@Whitzerd no the reason bulimics tend to be normal weight or put on weight is because vomiting causes dehydration so that then body will hold onto all liquids a person drinks -> this causes water weight gain. i've never done that wen i had an ed. wat do u use it for?
Melanie Mayron is like Broadway's Annie gone horribly awry.
i know. i enjoyed the book more i think. :)
That nurse doesn't know the meaning of "get your hands off of me", apparently.
Oh man. I knew Casey's friend was going to kill herself or something the way she was talking to Casey and just from the look on her face after Casey left. Poor girl.
@OhMaiGosh i think they tried to make it go with the theme of the movie or whatever =)
OH MY GOD SHE DIED!! I liked Carol!!
I think even back in the 80's they knew enough not to cohort 2 anorexics together for fear that they would coach each other or compete.
i dont think she could just walk out... ive been there done that and they keep hospital locked or you need card to swipe to get out!
they would soo catch on she stole all that stuff, to hide,
they search peoples rooms,,,
I agree! how HORRIBLY unprofessional of them to let Casey watch all of this!
@Whitzerd Yes but she was described as having bulimia and anorexia. actually the 80's if you listen to the part how her sis tells them she is preg she says its the 80's
who is that screaming at 5:12, is that carol link?
I think because she knows she'll get out but soon she'd be back in and she probably feels guilty or encouraging that lifestyle for the little girl. she might have been depressed too when people are depressed some can hide it very well. but after that she took a bunch of pills and died. so yea it probably had something to do with that.
THEY LIKE TO THINK THEY CAN CURE YOU
that hanndd oh my god, lol
@PeaceNdLovee I had black thick hair to my butt, and when these obsessions with being slim took contole over me I shaved it off, I looked like a cancer patient, i lost two pounds
the doctors seem so unprofessional, esp when they were giving casey the central line in the part before this one.
yeah like my gymnastics friend
@nuwavething not being sarcastic at all, Congratulations, i just wish so many other people could feel the way you do :)
which girl carol?
@tinaaarx3 some do -everyone is different- it affects people in different ways
And the friend always dies... :(
5:04 y is carol crying?
her family was told not to come and see her because it will only upset her and slow down her recovery
@Whitzerd not always true thou - Some people do loose A LOT through bulimia- it's not that it doens't happen it's jus not a guarantee
Maybe she should have eaten some of the food pics on her wall, kidding.
this film is so ridiculously dramatic hahaha
It's a movie- they never get it right. Codes take a long time, and are a mess.
This is a decent movie but the music is killing me...
@Lisa V 🤷🏻♀️ my comment is 10 years old. I would have to watch it again.
do they really shake like that? That hand scared the crap outa me
what in fuck is up with all the crazy music?
Because she hates herself, her life, what she does...everything, I'd suppose. She's just sick and tired of it.
Yes, but they couldn't make the actors really thin or else they could REALLY end up like that.
@Whitzerd not always true thou - Some people do loose A LOT through bulimia- it's not that it doens't happen it's jus not a guarantee not jus that the girl ends up killing herself- so how can it make it look like bulimia is the answer!!!!!!
lol tis ok!
If a doctor can pull it out then the layperson can do it. Just gotta know the technique.
gah that music is killing me..
I'm confused why was she crying?
@painterofmusic In real life they wouldnt have let them watch, at least they arent supposed to. Unless they did it to show them what can happen but still it isnt right to do that
for dramatic effect.
elctrolytes
what grabbed casey
I knew that ;) now I feel embarressed. Stupid spelling error!!
I know! I was like 0.o
Wait, the other anorexic girl in the hospital didn't die in the book. They shouldn't have changed it.
what boook it is?
@thedrunkenelf or somethin w.ur electrolytes
casey
I think they are thin... and they are thinner than at the begining of the video... I was fatter than that when i had problems, although people say i wasn,t, i m sure i was
@Whitzerd very untrue
@painterofmusic they probably wanted casey to realize what anorexia can do to u...maybe a wake up call for casey
how come the hospital personnel just let Casey stand there watching her friend, dead? :o That's awful, and very unprofessional. I think that's a mistake in the script.
i guess the friend dies...all the anorexia movies the friend dies

the medical procedures in this section are a joke.
she committed suicide
I was waiting for her to stumble into the dark world of prostitution in the alley.
bulimia
spoiler...
It doesn't fit her character or demeanor in the movie.
