I think you show a lot of courage in speaking of your disease. I commend you! I wish you the best. =) I have been fortunate that I haven't suffered from an ED. I had two BEST FRIENDS in high school that did & it was heart breaking to see. I suffer with depression/anxiety disorder & while it is NOT the same thing, it is frustrating when ppl say things like, "Just suck it up! Get over it, etc." That would be like telling someone to walk with a broken leg! Mental illness is very serious.
omg when they were doing the surgery i could just imagine what that felt like thank god that i have been asleep for all the surgeries ive ever had!!!!!
Overall it looks scarier and more painful than it actually is. The worst is the lidocaine injections to numb the area. Those are hell. I have had stitches without anything to numb the area that have hurt less. Sometimes you can feel when they thread the catheter. It doesn't hurt but you can feel it bumping and moving inside you.
Casey has hyperalimentation/total parenteral nutrition, a method of delivering nutrients to those who can't swallow food for medical reasons. It involves a catheter, which is a small plastic tube (which can be inserted into different body cavities/veins) being inserted into a vein in this case. The end of the catheter is attached to a bag of vitamins which is machine-controlled to release the contents into the body at a certain rate per hour. IVs and nasogastric tubes are used more often now.
I like this movie better than other ED films because it deals with secrecy of what goes on and how disorders evolved from. I like how the psychiatrist coaxes Casey open up to telling him what she feels deep down inside. I don't think I've seen any person who is in pyschology try that hard. It shows he really does care about her. :)
I always feel like I have to be the thinnest. Or the one with the least mistakes. Or the one with the best grades. And the one with the longest hair. These are just a few, I could name at least twenty more....
It's called "hyperal", and it's also known as total parenteral nutrition, or TPN. Wiki says this about it: "Total parenteral nutrition (TPN), is the practice of feeding a person intravenously, bypassing the usual process of eating and digestion. The person receives nutritional formulas containing salts, glucose, amino acids, lipids and added vitamins."
EEEEKK!!!!! Oh god that is sooooo grooossss. I mean, watching isn't too bad, but imagining it happening to me. GAH I could never do something like that, I would probably pass out from the thought of what they were doing as I lay there, even though I couldn't feel it!
i have had friends on tpn, honestly i stick with regular feeding tubes, not big on letting them stick anything in my vein. its better to just eat, but i'm usuallyon tubes in the hospital.
not always ive had naso gastric tube at the same time as this. Its called a central line and pumps vitamins, minerals, electrolites into the bloodstream. Then i got liquid feeds with fats, calories and other nutrition through the tube
@kagomekr the main actress is jennifer jason leigh from fast times at ridgemont high and the other actress is melanie mayron.this tv movie came out in 1981.
in my med. terminology classes we had to watch this HBO or Showtime special called THIN. I think its called that. It's sorta new...like in the last few years it was made...these women and teens at a clinic in florida...dam they did some extreme shit to fool doctors. A few died.
Hyperalimentation is sent into the blood stream. It's used when stomach access is either not available, or - as in the case of eating disorders- can still be purged. The central line is usually near the collar bone, and can stay for several weeks. Another option is to put a tube in through a large vessel in the neck, and have the catheter (tube) come out through the chest wall for hooking it up to the IV nutrition. 27 years as an RN... BTDT with taking care of central lines and hyperal.
i think they put in a central line for TPN, PEGs go in the stomach. although later in the movie when they show the IV bag, its clear, TPN is like a nasty off white vanilla Ensure color. Yuck.
It was bugging me why the name of the author of this book Steven Levenkron sounded so familiar. I finally remembered. He was Karen Carpenter's psychologist.
Veronica Saephan Yup. And he's ridding another girl of her 'demons' . The only difference is, this chick isn't spewing pea soup at him. Ironically, she's the one doing all the upchucking. Linda Blair didn't upchuck before 'Captain Howdy' took over. The scene where she's doing sit ups in bed...speed that up and she would look the same as the scene in The Exorcist. "Stay away from her! The sow is mine! Moooo-THERRRR."
they gave her local anaesthetic because they don't like putting most patients under who could be so unstable, it looks like it was mostly her anxiety that was bothering her
I noticed the IV tube or whatever it was...he called it a mosquito ..I was told they were called Butterfly's though...because Ihave way deep an tiny veins and the docs use the butterfly IV tubes on me.
@lindsayrenee01 no always ive had ng tube at the same time as this. Its called a central line and pumps vitamins, minerals, electrolites into the bloodstream. Then i got liquid feeds with fats, calories and other nutrition through the tube
I started crying when I saw this scene. My biggest fear is hospitals.. doctors.. needles.. i cant even watch this stuff anymore without freaking out ):
movie made me feel hungry cause she wasnt eating and i am a foodie lol i eat delicious foods and love it. and dont want to puke it out later. i have superior taste buds and would never compromise them just to be thin. i live life to the fullest. lol but in a most healthy way.
Lindsayrenee01 ... I wondered about the same thing. But I'm thinking that it could have to do with her being not really ana, but mia (bulimic). Purging on a daily basis for months or even years destroys your throat, so maybe this is to show how serious it is? ... They should've described it better though, because we never really hear about purging in this mvoie. Apart from that: I really love Jennifer Jason Leigh, love her charisma. ^^
I am trying to find a movie..It is about bulimia there are two sisters and they are like young adults and the younger sis has bulimia I think she ends up dying....anyone know this movie help please
Well, it may not be a symptom of an eating disorder, per say, but it is atypical, as people need a certain amount of calories/nutrition each day to be healthy. I would see your doctor and ask about it. Just to rule out any physical and/or psychological reasons for this lack of appetite.
No, it's a CVK (in swedish) so you can get your outrition that way. I thik that's the wrong way. I've seen girls been carried inta a room before every meal. I've had that myself but I talked them into taking it away...
It isn't cruel... they're giving her local anesthesia before cutting her open. You can feel they they're doing but it doesn't hurt. I've been through many procedures like that and it's an odd feelig... But no pain.
Yes but, also it's because this movie was filmed like 26 years ago or something, and at this moment slim clothes wasn't "cool" and fashion. They didn't really wear jeans
because someone that malnourished and weakened would have a much greater risk of not waking up from a general anasthesia. Thats why local anasthesia is the general practice for hyperalimination.
No, it wasn't painful. It's just a local anesthesia so it's just the needle that "hurts"... The physical pain is nothing... It's the feeling of loosing control that's the worst. It's awful!
how come they called bulimia bulmarexia!?oh ya n ppl sayin get over ur self or just eat or ur not fat or you are sexy or guys like curves(its not bout guys) its psychological. i kno all the answers and yet im still stuck with anorexia, bulimia binge-purging and night eating disorder, so trust me yall aint helpin sayin all that mean stuff. if we all knew the answers to all mental diseases there wouldnt be need for shrinks or mad houses or serial killers but hey... they all exist so drop it
actually isn't it that they still ovulate, but the egg is too weak to implant itself and become pregnant? bec i know a couple gals who are anorexic/bulimic and have got preggo... guess they were lucky huh?? nevertheless, eating disorders SUCK..
one time when i sick n throwing up , and tummy pain, we thought it was apendincitis but no, thought maybe a cyst popped but anyways , they gave me IV fluids :P i didnt like it, i felt so bloated
No an eating disorder is considering that you think you are fat and deepeer than that is that you are some depression with family like they dont treate you very well. But f you dont eat because you arent ngry is tatally normal but if you get in to te hospital they treat yo like if you were anorexic
why do you watch these videos on eating disorders and make stupid comments..if you don't understand and are just gonna be critical then don't fucking watch them. my god.

Damn Jennifer Jason Leigh is such a damn good actress. Amazing that she's Daisy from Hateful 8.
omg when they were doing the surgery i could just imagine what that felt like thank god that i have been asleep for all the surgeries ive ever had!!!!!

Exactly. Doctors also administer hyperalimentation, IVs, and nasogastric tubes to cancer patients.
I like this movie better than other ED films because it deals with secrecy of what goes on and how disorders evolved from. I really like her therapist.
Me, too.

Omigod!! I've forgotten how powerful this film was.
@lindsayrenee01 You can infuse calories intravenously. It's called hyperalimentation.
"Don't be too good at it, I like to be the sickest that's all." Licorice1977
EEEEKK!!!!! Oh god that is sooooo grooossss. I mean, watching isn't too bad, but imagining it happening to me. GAH I could never do something like that, I would probably pass out from the thought of what they were doing as I lay there, even though I couldn't feel it!
shes so pretty..
depending...lipids and tpn is through the vein..which is the bloodstream...through a central line
Why was she awake for the surgery?
i have had friends on tpn, honestly i stick with regular feeding tubes, not big on letting them stick anything in my vein. its better to just eat, but i'm usuallyon tubes in the hospital.

that girl is so pretty...she kinda looks like Heidi Klum :S

I'll admit I won't eat for a bit to fit into a dress. But I could never starve myself that long. I like food too much.

the guy from the exorcist! its been bugging up until this part...
It was bugging me why the name of the author of this book Steven Levenkron sounded so familiar. I finally remembered. He was Karen Carpenter's psychologist.
@@jackycook64 holy bananas that’s bonkers
@@holliebedsbeauty Isn't it! It is very sad that she was not able to recover.
Is that the priest from the exorcist
Veronica Saephan yeap that's him. No one better to cure you from anorexia than an exorcist I guess..
Veronica Saephan Yup. And he's ridding another girl of her 'demons' . The only difference is, this chick isn't spewing pea soup at him. Ironically, she's the one doing all the upchucking. @tripurity I can appreciate that! It's fascinating why we feel that way when we r so ill
is this really how they treated severe ana patients back then?
They still put feeding tubes in like this in severe cases. Sometimes through the nose
they gave her local anaesthetic because they don't like putting most patients under who could be so unstable, it looks like it was mostly her anxiety that was bothering her
I noticed the IV tube or whatever it was...he called it a mosquito ..I was told they were called Butterfly's though...because Ihave way deep an tiny veins and the docs use the butterfly IV tubes on me.
this is a picc line; I had one put in last year because my veins kept collapsing. it is a horrible procedure and it hurt me very much :(
@Brooke684 It's also on Dailymotion.
she reminds me of the brady bunch
@lindsayrenee01 no always ive had ng tube at the same time as this. Its called a central line and pumps vitamins, minerals, electrolites into the bloodstream. Then i got liquid feeds with fats, calories and other nutrition through the tube
Do they still do intravenous feeding? Did they not have PEG & NG tubes in the '80s?
I started crying when I saw this scene. My biggest fear is hospitals.. doctors.. needles.. i cant even watch this stuff anymore without freaking out ):
isnt her psychologist the priest in the movie exorcist??
yes
movie made me feel hungry cause she wasnt eating and i am a foodie lol i eat delicious foods and love it. and dont want to puke it out later. i have superior taste buds and would never compromise them just to be thin. i live life to the fullest. lol but in a most healthy way.

Tom Baker really looks young in this episode.
@lindsayrenee01 Where are you getting this information? It's pretty inaccurate.
i dont get it, was it a feeding tube?
It was like an iv oh man a feeding tube is not comfortable going in for me it felt like suffication
Not in all cases. IV nutrition has been used for decades, depending on the reasons needed. :)
What is it exactly that they are doing at the beginning??
very true! but wasnt she actually eating food too?
@americangirlmusician Perhaps it's Hungerpoint?
this movie makes me hungry
oh my god yes ur right!!!i new i had seen him somewhere!!!haha yea shy didnt he just say that!!then again he died in the exorcist!!
I didn't notice. Where did they change actresses?
@j3nyy IVs do that, not feeding tubes.
I am trying to find a movie..It is about bulimia there are two sisters and they are like young adults and the younger sis has bulimia I think she ends up dying....anyone know this movie help please

@kagomekr she wasnt even born then lol, though she looks a bit like her sometimes :)
injecting a feeding tube.
The Shrink will scream, "THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELLS YOU!!" To ward the demons of ANOREXIA!!!!! (that shrink is the priest form Exorcist)
its based on the book with the same title
I meant a drip lol
what are they doing to her in surgery?
No, it's a CVK (in swedish) so you can get your outrition that way. I thik that's the wrong way. I've seen girls been carried inta a room before every meal. I've had that myself but I talked them into taking it away...

She'll be fine, her doctor is Jewish.
what are they doing to casey?
because someone that malnourished and weakened would have a much greater risk of not waking up from a general anasthesia. Thats why local anasthesia is the general practice for hyperalimination.
@lindsayrenee01 they put nutriment to your bloodstream
I can't believe they need all that just for a nose drip to be inserted.
I think they're putting in a catheter.
i know i know, but she says she doesn't sit on her toilet seat at home so how does she go to the bathroom
what the hell kind of procedure are they doing? Why don't they just give her a feeding tube?
Clearly.
oooh
They would have to watch her at all times so she wouldn't exercise or anything. And they wouldn't be aloud to walk. They burn too much.
No, it wasn't painful. It's just a local anesthesia so it's just the needle that "hurts"...
The physical pain is nothing... It's the feeling of loosing control that's the worst. It's awful!
hell, I dont even know why she is worry about getting pregnant, "GIRL YOU CANT EVEN GET YOUR PERIOD ANYMORE".
@mrsrobinsoncat it's like you read my mind.
carol thinks its a contest to see who can make themselves sicker???!!
eating disorders are very competitive
Id say both.
how come they called bulimia bulmarexia!?oh ya n ppl sayin get over ur self or just eat or ur not fat or you are sexy or guys like curves(its not bout guys) its psychological. i kno all the answers and yet im still stuck with anorexia, bulimia binge-purging and night eating disorder, so trust me yall aint helpin sayin all that mean stuff. if we all knew the answers to all mental diseases there wouldnt be need for shrinks or mad houses or serial killers but hey... they all exist so drop it
did she die?
you can still get pregnant even when your period stops. you still have the hormones, just less of them. i know. it happened to me.
You are wrong.I remember an interview with Jennifer and she lost all that weight!!
actually isn't it that they still ovulate, but the egg is too weak to implant itself and become pregnant? bec i know a couple gals who are anorexic/bulimic and have got preggo...
guess they were lucky huh??

nasty. is it really painful when they put it in?
Pushy fail doctor is fail
Wait, if she never used a toilet seat, how does she take a dump?
BratWithACamera She hovers over it.
No need to be rude.
They also wear baggy clothes cos their clothes become baggy as they lose weight
So different from the book.
She's weird!
