  • "Levelling up requires two things: imagination, which the Conservative Party doesn't have, and money, which it doesn't want to spend."
Rod Liddle, SDP candidate for Middlesbrough South & Cleveland East on BBC Question Time
The SDP is a patriotic, economically left-leaning, and culturally traditional political party.

We can do things other than produce real items. We can produce online products (software), there's plenty of scope to get the economy going with services (education), finance (we need to tax The City, for once).
We do need to invest in our provinces, but we need to redistribute wealth from the super-rich to us first and foremost. That will grease the cogs of the economy.

My job involves researching British companines. I tire of reading about British Businesses being sold to foreign competitors, who after 3,4,5, years of ownership decide it's better to just close the business down and move manufaturing to the home of the parent company (very patriotic of them !) - main reason cited is usually cost of production - by which they mean Taxes, Energy and Tariffs. Seems that for 25 years, money is always available for foreign wars and interests, but not to support UK INDUSTRY. As an aside ; ever noticed that when in Spain, France, Germany, Italy or Sweden, the vehicles used by the Public Sector are Spanish, French, German, Italian and Swedish. Here our Police Cars, Ambulances and Council Vehicles are usually French, German, Italisn or Sweedish !?!?!? For 25 years, we could have demanded that the Public Sector buy vehicles actually made here (or at least a UK brand) - but that is too much like 'protectionism' for the Tories and Labour lot.

So good. I'm hoping that this is the general election that brings the SDP enough publicity that voters will be forced to question their tribal voting instincts and start looking at what each party actually stands for. Building a stronger and fairer country is better for us than bribing us with tax cuts before an election or promising massive spending without changing the problems this country has had for a long time. Too far to the right or too far to the left does not represent the majority of people in this country or allow us the freedom to plan and work for the lives we choose.

Things were in fact much better under the last Labour government from 1997 up until 2010. Funding for all of our public services including the NHS was at record highs in real terms adjusted for inflation. Average wages went up by 25.7% in real terms adjusted for inflation for the whole period from 1997 up until 2010. But since 2010 under the tories average wages again in real terms adjusted for inflation went down by minus 2.5% for the whole period up until 2019, and since 2019 that figure will have gotten a lot worse thanks to the cost of living crisis, inflation surging out of control thanks to our con-servative government

UK' miserable situation has been driven by decades of low private and public investment levels, a historical focus on cost-cutting over capacity building, and a total lack of infrastructure upgrades.
The UK government has repeatedly mismanaged its own economy through prolonged austerity measures, inaccurate inflation and interest rate handling, which has exacerbated slow growth rates, minimal real wage growth, and a significant increase in public debt.

If you want to see what real ‘levelling up’ looks like, look to Germany. They’ve been doing it since the early 90s. They’ve spent trillions on the project and are still pouring money in. I was over in the old DDR in 1990 and saw the start of levelling up taking place. In the city of Erfurt there were British BT vans shooting about. Why? Because the Federal government had hired spare telecoms capacity from other EU states to get the DDR telecommunications system up to Western standards as quickly as possible as possible. On frequent visits back to the unified Germany I saw project after project like this. Does anyone think that any of the big 2 UK parties would launch or fund such schemes?
