You mentioned the eclipse, so I thought there was going to be (and you were warning of) a dip in the brightness of the daylight.

    Nice video, Tom.
The two tool chests look great.
Also the division inside I find great.
Since you have a beautiful carving lying on the table, which looks like a mirror housing.

One thing I really like about woodworking is you can build custom stuff to fit your needs exactly! You make some very nice stuff Tom thank you.

Hey Tom, you referenced a stool you guys built in one of your sessions. I was looking to make something exactly what you designed. Where can I find your information on that stool? Thanks.

Thanks for the interest. I think the stool I was referring to was a commissioned piece I made last winter. You'll find it on my membership site, An Unplugged Life, details here: www.theunpluggedwoodshop.com/membership

The pins that push down and lock the front door when you close the lid, are they commercially available? Or did you make them?

At the end of this, there is an invitation to pay a membership subscription for access to instructional videos. I went to the website and have tried to 'Become a Member' but the fields to enter my data don't take input. I've tried to use the 'Contact' function, which says 'to fill in the form' - but there's no form. What am I missing here? I'm in the UK and don't really want the cost of 'phoning the premises in Toronto.

Hey Tom, Love these tool chests!! I've been doodling ideas for my own for a few years now and you've pretty much given me a kick up the butt being able to build two in the space of two months!! Where did you find that lid/drawer latch?! Or is that custom hardware?

all of the hardware came from Lee Valley Tools. The lid/front panel pins are here: www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=32762&cat=1,46158,42665

I love this! Having special storage for tools is so satisfying, but only if the tools are worth it :D Do you have some junk tools for banging on stuff or more general building purposes? Where would you store them? ALSO I LOVE the wood you are using! Any tips on how to get some beautiful wood? All I can get my fingers on are cheap pine-boards... cheers :D

where abouts in the world are you? Most places in Canada and the US have some sort of lumber supply within a few hours drive. Lots of places will ship you small amounts too.

An interesting source of wood is discarded furniture. You can frequently salvage a lot of good, high quality hardwood that way.

I don't travel with my tools often enough to justify elaborate tool chests, but have easily run out of tool storage space so storage cabinets are on my horizon. The aesthetics aren't nearly as important to me as durability and reliability. Your chests are pretty nice, but I would probably go with the plain look over aesthetics every time.. Just a personal thing with me. Other tastes may vary.

    • @jonathanjoffe751

I feel similarly. I carry my daily user tools in Paul Seller's "Traveling Joiner's Chest." Its simple, plain, and ultra strong. I made mine out of alder and pine scraps from the trash. Despite its simple aesthetic, it regularly elicits compliments and curiosity from strangers.

Thanks for the comments. I completely agree- sometimes just a box is enough...that's why the Japanese style tool chest. Very fast and easy to build.
