It’s so fun making your own tools, cause even if it turns out a little ugly or a little bit off, you made it yourself and that makes you want to use that tool more. It’s one of a kind, and will probably last longer than a store-bought thing. If nothing else, it for sure has more character!
I'm really happy you showed off your first version of a mallet as well to let us know that you don't have to start off brilliantly to get into woodworking
Just finished up my apprenticeship as a boilermaker welder, and now starting my home journey of Woodworking. You are the reason. Cheers for the inspiration mate. Love watching your vids, keep doing what your doing. Love from down under 🤙
Was just commenting to Jimmy Diresta that the maker community is vast and ageless and thanks to the Internet, showing lots of new growth and interest in the crafts. So much information available and many thankful for folks like him and you.
You're the reason I do woodwork in school and I hope that you're doing well in this cold weather keep well and warm and keep up the amazing work ☕️🇮🇪👏.
Bril!. Used to love watching my Dad use old World hand tools for shaping timber! He wasn't trained but just had the 'touch'. Made some amazing things. Love these vis!. Nuff said 🙂
I just found your channel not too long ago, the way you work I would have sworn you were born with a chisel in your hand, incredible stuff for two years in
Nice work Eoin, are you saying you're only at this 2 years? You're a fast learner, I'm a carpenter builder for 25 and I'll tell you what, you do nice stuff, I like how when you were cleaning up the edge with the chessel you lost a bit off the end, you could've edited it out and we'd be none the wiser, people often ask me for woodworking tips I tell them to just have a go, it's fun, wood is very forgiving, it's ok to make a mistake it's how we get better at anything.. well done I enjoy your videos.
Agreed. I do the same in my garden videos as I think it important to show the mistakes. Glad I found him here… first found him on TikTok, so 3 mins of edited brilliance. This is better to watch.
My favorite repeat project every once in a while are marking guages, I've made 7 those far and making them with wedges is pretty fun because it's good practices with funny mortises and stuff, I'm 18 now, and have been hand tool woodworking since 2019! By now I think I've made about 6 or 7
I used to do woodworking in school, i didn’t get very far but you’ve resparked my interest in it again, if I get the tools I’ll definitely give this a go! 🏴
from the states unfortunately, Detroit, Michigan to be exact (suburbs though) i absolutely love everything about your country and want to move there. Im living vicariously through you mate👍🏼well done
I made a small mallet of Osage (head) and olive wood (handle). One of my favorite tools. The olive wood is super comfortable and the obnoxious level of density in the Osage makes it work like a dream. A slight tap and my chisels sink nicely int the project.
When my eldest nephew was 5 years old, I had made him a replica sword made entirely out of wood with traditional fittings. Oddly enough, the process you used to mortise the mallet head works well for fabricating and fitting a guard for such a project, as it acts like a built in end ferrule.
I would of never guessed! You must of been raised around it because you have a natural skill an make it all look so easy! Inspiring for sure. I’ve done plenty of woodworking but never with hand tools and ever since I’ve started watching this channel I’ve found myself on the never ending search for that Sheffield steel!!!
The tiny Stanley plane lolll i just got a gigantic baldwin tool company plane that's over 100 years old. Just planned my handle for my first mallet and its working amazing. Still amazingly sharp. And working great. It's literally like 2 feet long lolll
It is incredible that you only picked up woodworking in 2020. You must be truly passionate to become so incredibly proficient in such a relatively short time
0:13 _"Big, heavy, metal_ yoke" 😂😅🤣 I'd heard that _"yoke"_ was Irish slang for something you don't have a name for -- like _"thingumajig"_ -- but that's the first time I've actually heard it being used! 😂
Just found you while going through shorts and this brings me back to High School. Woodshop was my favorite class and for some reason I was drawn to the hand tools instead of the fancy power tools my school shop had. It makes you take more time and gives each piece a unique look that you can't get with the power tools. Makes me really want to go out and start my own collection of the tools so I can get back into it.
One of the first things i turned on my lathe was a round sculptors mallet. It was only made from rubbish pine. However it did the job well enough. Then a few years later i turned a new one from a piece of ironbark. It’s only about 2/3 the size yet weighs twice as much
I hope you're being careful with that linseed oil. Years ago, I was using it on some kitchen cupboards and forgot to take my oily, linseed soaked rags outside, and caught my kitchen on fire. It cost about $200k to repair my house.
My first mallet, I attached the handle by driving the handle into a hole with a peg. Didn't drill the hole all the way, just so it would drive the wedge in for me. this looks like a much better way of doing it.
It's a fine job you're doing, ladd. I hope some young people are watching you so they will be shown a great career path if they are blessed with the basic talent. How many people so much self satisfaction from their work?
I have a mallet made from a pallet and a branch from from the garden. Its ugly but it works. When it breaks i might make a better/finer one. But im lazy and it too well for me to make a ne one. 😂 But yours is very fine. I tip my hat to you sir. 😊🤠
My first project was a mallet in the style of Paul Sellers’ joiner’s mallet video series, made from a dense chunk of maple(?) from a pallet. I still have and use it!
Be careful with your hands; you use them hard. No problems now, but as you age, your hands will show signs of wear and start hurting. Nevertheless, you are very talented and most importantly, passionate about your work. God Bless!
I love that you encourage the use of hand tools! It's super handy for beginners who can't afford all the power tools just yet, and it definitely instills a sense of pride when you finish a project. Do you have much experience making other things with scrap wood? I have acquired a lot from various sources, but most videos I can find aren't very hand tool-friendly. Looking forward to seeing more content =)
Excellent vide Eoin, only wish I got a better look at your bit brace, I've just got into using more hand tools, though I've got power tools to build anything, there's something about the old hand tool that call to me. my Father had a brace but that's been gone for years, much like me dad. Anyway I subscribed, love this style video!!!
This is EXACTLY what I needed! I’ve been trying to make a mallet from a nice bit of hardwood I’ve got, but I made a right mess of it and split the bottom of the wood when trying to chisel the handle hole! Can’t wait to try this tomorrow
Eoin, any chance you'd be interested in doing a video on plane & spokeshave setup? Back tipping away with a bit of DIY after many years of paying other men to do simple tasks. Doing pretty well but can't get my plane and spoke shave working. Made the mistake of taking both apart. They're reasonably sharp but I'm still not convinced they're set up correctly as they keep blocking. A lesson in sharpening wouldn't go astray either.
Just getting into woodworking. Love your videos. Just built my 1st carpenter style workbench. Using hand tools ( struggling to make a straight cut) im going to build this mallet. About how much taper should you have in the head for the handle. Ex 2.5" down to 1.5". Sorry if this doesn't make any since. Also. What some good dimensions for a beginner mallet. Thank you for your answers and your video
It’s so fun making your own tools, cause even if it turns out a little ugly or a little bit off, you made it yourself and that makes you want to use that tool more. It’s one of a kind, and will probably last longer than a store-bought thing. If nothing else, it for sure has more character!
First project in 2020 and you’re where you are? Congratulations
I'm really happy you showed off your first version of a mallet as well to let us know that you don't have to start off brilliantly to get into woodworking
It's a simple chamfer, but it renders the mallet quite unbreakable.
infinity war?
Just finished up my apprenticeship as a boilermaker welder, and now starting my home journey of Woodworking. You are the reason. Cheers for the inspiration mate. Love watching your vids, keep doing what your doing. Love from down under 🤙
You’re my favorite TH-cam or and you inspire me to do a lot of woodwork I’m in the woodwork now thanks to you and I love it especially planes
Smoke another
I'll be following this guide over the Christmas to new year period! Thanks brother 👊
Best of Luck with it Curtis. let us know how you get on.
Well Curtis we gotta know, how's the mallet holding up?
Diamond of a video! Well done, thanks very much.
I'm making my 1st mallet now and seeing/hearing about your early attempts makes me feel a little better about mine
Bril!. Used to love watching my Dad use old World hand tools for shaping timber! He wasn't trained but just had the 'touch'. Made some amazing things. Love these vis!. Nuff said 🙂
I just found your channel not too long ago, the way you work I would have sworn you were born with a chisel in your hand, incredible stuff for two years in
Want to say you thanks from Russia!
You inspired me so well in a way of woodworking. I wish you all the best in life and your career❤
Thank you for your videos. I grew up woodworking but not like this. I believe I do like all the hand tool woodwork better!

Absolutely love this channel, great content and the irish accent is a cherry on top
The 'Bob Ross' of wood working!
i'm not even into this kind of thing but your voice is really calming.
Thank you so much! I just almost bought a mallet, and your video came just in time.
My favorite repeat project every once in a while are marking guages, I've made 7 those far and making them with wedges is pretty fun because it's good practices with funny mortises and stuff, I'm 18 now, and have been hand tool woodworking since 2019! By now I think I've made about 6 or 7

Thanks for the tutorial! Finished my first mallet today.
Poplar hammer head, oak axe handle with olive oil and burnishing finish.
You’re getting sawdust in your tea when ripping the handle!
I want ash in my bloodstream
Glad you found your linseed oil!
Lol same. I could never lose my linseed oil…
Who's lindsay doyle?
Correction boiled linseed oil
F isreal
So a I, i was worried there for a bit.
from the states unfortunately, Detroit, Michigan to be exact (suburbs though) i absolutely love everything about your country and want to move there. Im living vicariously through you mate👍🏼well done
This video inspired me so I made a mallet today from Italian Oak with an Italian cherrywood handle. Thank you.

If you've only been doin this since 2020 your skill is very impressive
Eoin, I’m glad I found your channel. I enjoy listening to you and watching you working your projects using many simple tools.
I made mine last weekend, I used a leadhead pattern, a deadblow is next on my list
I've been watching quite a few of these mallet videos. I liked yours the best. Thanks!
Sir you are a legend.. teaching a dieing trade to a whole new generation. Hat off to you. Keep up your work and you sir are going places
only 2 years ago and this much progress good work mate

Nothing like a handle worn in from years of use. Cant be beat.
I can tell you love linseed oil. I have an old gun so I sanded off the lacquer and gave it some nice linseed oil. It looks so much better than before!
Can’t wait to try and make one.
My favourite tool is a mallet I made from a Greenheart offcut from an old tidal door. Had been in sea water some 50yrs, none the worse.
you've inspired me to get into woodworking.
It is incredible that you only picked up woodworking in 2020. You must be truly passionate to become so incredibly proficient in such a relatively short time
Fella, I like your style. Just, all of it.
To make your mallet, first get your mallet 😂 great video. remember making one at school
To be fair, you could always borrow a mallet from someone else or use a rock.
just getting into woodwork. finding your videos very helpful, keep up the good work.
It was a pleasure to watch such a young man teach us his craft. Very relaxing too 😁
I always enjoy your videos and appreciate the care and skill you have with the old hand tools.
wish i'd learned the trick of marking the cut line with a chisel when i was doing woodwork at school, would have made all my projects much neater!
I think I’ll have a go at that😀
You are a real pleasure to watch Your Mam must be so proud of you.
Much appreciate your work and videos! Very inspiring 👍🏼
0:13 _"Big, heavy, metal_ yoke" 😂😅🤣
I'd heard that _"yoke"_ was Irish slang for something you don't have a name for -- like _"thingumajig"_ -- but that's the first time I've actually heard it being used! 😂
You have a good straight sawing arm young Eoin, good technique there.
Just found you while going through shorts and this brings me back to High School. Thank you for your knowledge I’m going to attempt this at work on my lunch of course 😂 great video
Why do I find taking bits with the chisel so satisfying? Thanks for video! Looks like a simple enough project to start with. 😊
00:59 This lovely mallet has seen better days..
One of the first things i turned on my lathe was a round sculptors mallet. It was only made from rubbish pine. However it did the job well enough. Then a few years later i turned a new one from a piece of ironbark. It’s only about 2/3 the size yet weighs twice as much
That’s so cool how you can just find pieces of wood and be like “ooo I could a mallet outta dis yolk”
I hope you're being careful with that linseed oil. Years ago, I was using it on some kitchen cupboards and forgot to take my oily, linseed soaked rags outside, and caught my kitchen on fire. It cost about $200k to repair my house.
Amazing workmanship
I am learning so much from watching your great wood working vids! Love your old school ways!
do i make anything? no. no i don’t. do i watch these vids every day? yes. yes i do.
My first mallet, I attached the handle by driving the handle into a hole with a peg. Didn't drill the hole all the way, just so it would drive the wedge in for me. this looks like a much better way of doing it.
Very nice, I’ll make one
Cracking little tutorial, your video production just keepa getting better and better, you're a proper one-man production company now
Well worth subscribing been loving every video

I wish I had heard of this man before,Before I found out about his channel I had no clue what a plane was or they existed
Also sorry for my bad grammar but you get the point
Nice Job!
Nicely done
Nice looking mallet. I got a piece of white oak in the garage to try making into a mallet.
I love you videos I’m making me one now I did know how to make the hole lol
hmmm I'm gonna have to make myself a mallet now
Brilliant, thank you
I have a mallet made from a pallet and a branch from from the garden. Its ugly but it works. When it breaks i might make a better/finer one. But im lazy and it too well for me to make a ne one. 😂
But yours is very fine. I tip my hat to you sir. 😊🤠
your so lucky I had to make my mallet with just a chisel all the way through at collage
My first wooden mallet is just a big chunk of wood with a giant knot on the end
My first project was a mallet in the style of Paul Sellers’ joiner’s mallet video series, made from a dense chunk of maple(?) from a pallet. I still have and use it!
made my first mallet, mortise is a sad sight but it works
The amount of splinters this dude gets must be crazy

Looks real nice! Have you ever seen or tried to make Abraham Lincoln’s mallet? If not, I think you would really enjoy the challenge.
I like it!
I've long heard that "Hunger is the best sauce."
Now I know "Labor is the best finish."
very cool
Looks fun!
You should end videos with some of your favorite local music
I guess I'll try to make a mallet then!
This is EXACTLY what I needed!
I’ve been trying to make a mallet from a nice bit of hardwood I’ve got, but I made a right mess of it and split the bottom of the wood when trying to chisel the handle hole!
Can’t wait to try this tomorrow
2 years wow you have progressed I thought your dad taught you from a long line of carpenters and tool makers
"Oh, we'll manage" 😆 😆 😆

Ye got sum linseed after haha 🇮🇪
I kept this bit of scrap... to add to the small mountain of such pieces that everyone who fools around with wood seems to have😂
Hahahahaha using an orbital sander pad by hand was so funny. I thought he was going to get out an electric tool for the first time ever
I'm going out side and making a mallet now.
