I just love how Erina, a women born in the 1800s, is so accepting of her Grandson having a Black friend.

Erina at the end of part 1 was already pregnant. Her child ended up being one of Joseph's parents who are now dead. So his granny aka Erina and Speedwagon are all he have left. He's directly related via bloodline and is not the baby she saved.

Oh yeah, Erina was pregnant, most reactors don't catch that because she only talks about it once at the end and she words it weirdly so it's really easy to miss when making commentary
And some subtitles (like the ones they watched) makes it more hard to catch
the specific subtitles they had didn't quite get the point across, that's fair, but they miss shit all the time because they look away from the screen without pausing.

Joseph pulling a freaking tommy gun and then crying for Speedwagon at the end of the episode is such a great introduction for the character
The way he handled those cops in the beginning left a huge impression that he may look like Jonathan but he's different.
@@balmorablue_ yeah, like at first they try to pull the illusion of him being another gentle character but then they really pull the rug going from defending a thief to all out punching a corrupted cop.

My preferred solution to problems
We went from a british noble gentleman to a british roguish trickster. Rewatching this series after part 6 has truly become a roundabout trip.
Each JoJo has their similarities, particularly copious amounts of Luck and Pluck :p, but each one has radically different personality traits from their previous paragon. And I love it because it makes each one unique.
A "Roundabout" !? It was all connected from the beginning.

Fun fact: in the scene in the plane getting hijacked, in the manga the comic Joseph is read is supposed to be Superman (the character is just offscreen or off panel but you still see the name) in the anime this was changed so that he’s now reading “Baoh”. This in reference to another manga series Araki made before Jojo

I love that Jojo respects the passage of time and is willing to age its characters, even if it means they can die eventually. It makes their lives hold more weight. They feel more real that way.

I'm glad that you picked up on Erina being pregnant. Far too many JoJo skimmers assume Joseph being blood related was a plothole due to not actually watching/reading the story.
As someone that's really close to his grandma, Joseph punching the guy that came out of nowhere mid dinner to tell her "yeah your friend is dead" is my favorite moment from him. It's just so relatable

Another notheworthy thing to mention is that Erina actually didn't raise the baby girl, she was given to another character (this will come up as a plot point), so Jonathan's son didn't think of her as an adopted sister, which makes their later relationship less akward.

I love Jonathan, but he is, unfortunately, the worst JoJo. If we had more time with him, he may have been able to surpass some of the others, but he left us too soon.
@@Celestia282 Worst? He is physically the strongest and actually fights himself instead of using a stand. And on top of that he is the most noble and courageous, with his values and principles effecting the course of history. Josuke, Giorno and Jolyne are all worse JoJo's than Jonathan, as they are merely Jospeh/Dio/Jotaro clones with extra steps rather than their own characters and they have little to no impact on the overall story.
Yeah Part 2 goes hard and basically doesn't stop, it's the reason why Part 1 looks tame by comparison, because this shit gets WILD and you can never tell what Joseph is planning to overcome insane odds.
Also this episode is probably one of the best character introductions ever, we fully understand him as a character all in one episode: his current abilities, his mindset, his odd quirks, his unpredictable nature; the only thing left kinda hazy is what happened to his parents, but that's on purpose, but aside from that we know absolutely everything we need to know about the character already and can now see him grow with each episode
It's not the fact he had it. It's the fact he was able to hide the gun up to that point
The one thing about every joestar you'll notice is that they all share the same sense of justice like Johnathan but always have a trait that hold them back from being perfect like Johnathan was.
In Joseph's case, it's his temper

First episode of part 2 is always my favorite to watch the reaction to. Joseph's introduction is just perfect, with his endless amount of sass, brilliancy, and unexpectedness, he is easily a top-tier Jojo

In regards to Joseph being the grandson of Johnathan, one of erica's final lines in the final episode of part 1 was "Johnathens story faded into history, but the new life inside me at the time would hear of his deeds", which is a really round about and fancy way to that she was already pregnant when he died.
I remember watching this episode with a black friend of mine (we're both history students) and it getting to the part where the cop calls the boy Smokey and he's like "Hey, that's actually the correct term a racist would use during that time" and I just go "No, that's his name" and I could just watch how his face contorted to one of supreme annoyance.
Joseph is definitely my favorite JoJo, such a fun character to watch

Though there's to many to say, Joseph's Engrish is a big meme in itself :P such as "Taaxxxi!"

The superhuman strength, agility and regeneration power of Baoh are basically the same as the Vampires in JoJo, not counting his ability to use parts of his body as weapons - like his Epidermic Blades (which we will see in Pt.2 of JoJo as well) capable of cutting through steel and stone, his 'Shooting Bees Stinger Phenomenon' where he modifies the cellular structure of his hair to ignite on contact with warm surfaces like LIVING FLESH and his 'Break Dark Thunder Phenomenon' where he channels ALL the electricity of each single cell of his body into a powerful electric discharge capable of searing flesh and powering machinery).

Fun fact, the comic young Joseph was reading on the plane called Baoh is one that the author of JoJo's made right before the series. Sort of a JoJo's part 0 if you will.

24:02 Calling him Sherlock Holmes is actually a great compliment to Araki’s (creator of JoJo’s) skills he grew up reading many English books but his favourite by far was Sherlock Holmes and so he decided to base Joseph off of him in that manner.
It's been a while since I've watched Jojo but hot damn Joseph's intro will always stick in my mind.
So, some more manga history.
Joseph was actually a big departure from the typical shonen protagonist of the time. I mentioned before that Johnathan was pretty par for the course, as most shonen protags were unambiguous good boys with pretty straight forward personalities. Joseph, however, is not that. He is a trickster and a bit of an ass, which was VERY different from other shonen protagonists. It made him stand out, and helped normalize variety in protagonist personalities in the genre.
Joseph walked around New York shouting at taxi drivers and carrying a tommy gun so Denji could run around talking about boobs and drinking blood.

When I saw Joseph buying Coca-Cola, i knew he was my favourite. But after he pulled out the Tommy gun.. Perfection 🗿

So fun fact. English dub Joseph is the same voice of Nigel University from Kids Next Door and you can hear and fucking feel it its so uncanny.

you know how dio's father, dario, stole George joestar's ring and when the police caught him he was like "nah I gave it to him as a gift"? now joseph did the same for smokey and the thing about being exactly 195cm just like his father (we assume) and his father's father and his father's father's father is such a cool little detail
all the jojo's have like a characteristic/s that sort if links them back to jonathan and to one another, like they might grab something jonathan said and make that sort of a recurrent thing the character says or they will them strike the same pose at some climactic moment or they might do the same thing when encountering a conceptually similar situation, it's really fun to look for those
also there's a few that have some of erina's characteriscs
Finally the funniest jojo is here. This is where the real bizzare-ness begin
This filthy world doesn't deserve the greatness that is Joseph Joestar, he's just the best

Araki has a tendency of introducing the new main characters in ways, where they're reminiscent of the previous MC at first, but then they do a complete 180 out of nowhere.
Not necessarily in character, but in how they act out that character.
Joseph starts his first scene by speaking in a somewhat pompous, gentlemanly voice, just like Jonathan might have, and then he just fucking SLAMS HIS FIST into a policeman's face out of nowhere.
Spoiler comment for parts after Battle Tendency-
By that logic, How is Jotaro introduced in a way that resembles Joseph? He immediately comes off as brooding, rebellious, distrustful, harsh and jaded. Meanwhile, Joseph is more lighthearted, witty, social, funny and childish.

He's introduced as a troublemaker, like Joseph and the first glimpses we get of him are of a plucky boy.
Where Joseph however, was plucky but ultimately a respectful person, the first actual line we get from Jotaro is him telling his mother to fuck off.
Similarly Josuke is introduced visually as a rough high school bancho (more so in the manga, where the art style for early Part 4 still had really bulky men), and he spends most of his first scenes being extremely respectful and apologetic even when he doesn't need to be.
And the two times he DOES snap it's for the wrong reason.
Now we're getting closer to what JoJo is all about!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the first part as well, a lot of people can't take the cornyness and even drop it before seeing how Joseph already takes the show in a different spin.

Alright so the girl Erina saves at the end of part 1 was Joseph's mom and Erina was also pregnant with a boy that was Joseph's dad.
To clarify: the baby that was picked up, [Name Redacted As Spoiler], was raised by Erina. Important note: Erina was preggers on the boat. She gave birth to a son, who she raised alongside [Name Redacted]. Erina's son laid mad pipe in [Name Redacted], who then gave birth to Joseph Joestar. Erina's son then died in the Great War. It is now the beginning of the Second World War.

Notice how in Ep1 of Phantom Blood we were shown how evil Dio is. Here we are shown how good a guy Joseph is. The interaction with Joseph and Smokey is a call back to Dario and George. Dario stole the ring, and George said he gave it to Dario hoping Dario would become good. Joseph does the same for Smokey, and Smokey becomes a great guy.
Alicia: "Jolene, jolene, jolene" Yep, you got the ref. Jolyne is name for the Dolly Parton song.
Hard to get Smokey Brown's name reference. He is named after Smokey Robinson and James Brown.
Another cool and not racist black character in anime was the black girl from Hunter x Hunter, she's pretty cool and is pretty interesting as a character despite the fact you don't really see after a certain point.

The baby from the ship is his mother. Erina was pregnant from Jonathan when she escaped the ship. Jonathan's son is Joseph's father. Erina even hinted at being pregnant when she and the baby escaped by saying "the life that is growing within me".

Jojo Part 1 is basically a (really liberal) adaptation of Dracula + magic kung fu bullshit.
Part 2 is the rough plotline of an Indiana Jones plot + magic Kung Fu bullshit.
Part 3 is Around the World in 80 Days + freaky super powered ghost bullshit.
Part 4 is pretty much any small town murder mystery story + freaky super powered ghost bullshit. (The author himself also considers this part to be his magnum opus)
Part 5 is a mafia movie + superhuman ghost insanity.
Part 6 is a prison drama + superghost craziness.
Part 7 is basically what would happen if Wacky Races was allowed to have a body count and Dio was only a fabulous asshole instead of a fabulous bastard coated bastard with a crumbly dried out center of over the top eeeeeeeevil.
Young Joseph is so good. One of the coolest.its pretty cool how the speedwagon foundation just helps the joestars throughout the series because of his and Jonathan's relationship
