This is very helpful Shawn! I am going to try being more relaxed as I get those weird whistling undertones sometimes. I never really get just pure sound. I've heard it's because of being too tense. Thank you!!! 🙏

stay tuned for the upcoming lessons tomorrow, the next day, and the day after. All of those will help you remove those pesky whistle tones!

    Great! Short and concise.
I have a question about general lip shape. My top lip is "pointy" in the middle and I am worried it is messing with my tone. I can produce a tone, but feel like getting consistent is difficult because of that. Do you have any insights on that?

Yes you may have to offset the flute a little bit because of this because the air will be disrupted. They (some teachers) used to say you can’t play flute because of that but there are work arounds! Best of luck! 🎉

@@TairyuShakuhachi Thanks for your Reply. :)🙏
Do you know how I can determine that my shape is actually a problem and I should offset the flute?
I get a decent long RO when I do it centered and trying it offset feels a lot more difficult. Is getting a RO good enough to say: "Ok lip shape is no huge problem."?
Sadly I have no teachers nearby who could help me with this. 🦐

I would either say schedule a lesson with me or one of my junior masters to double check. :-) feel free to email me from my website shawnheadmusic@gmail.com

Good embouchure is one, if not the most hard to get right aspects of Shakuhachi playing, in my experience.

It also is one that we have to check again and again. I find myself falling into bad habits all the time and I need to go back and adjust.

    Hello there!
If I keep my mouth 100% relaxed and natural, it slightly opens to the right side. If I do a tiny little shy kiss, the aperture is centred. Which one should I do? I imagine the "kiss" makes muscles work more and can be tiring at length.
I received my Shakuhachi Yuu yesterday and can produce no more than a tiny whistle-like sound.

It is hard to say without seeing but if it is working, please use it!

@@TairyuShakuhachi Thank you for your reply. 🙏 I've just intentionally produced a A and a C notes for the 1st time (and checked with a tuning app). I'm looking forward to following your lessons on your website.
