    I had to call an audible this week, I'm working on two MGB projects and neither is complete yet so I wanted to give myself another day to get it complete before posting content. Really enjoyed making DIY content again hope it helps!

    My friend puts high temp gasket maker on his exhaust connections when he has trouble getting them to seal. Could be a better option then machining.

    Not sure if it is the angle of the camera but around the 3:19 mark you can kinda see the flanges might not be all flat. Happens on VW engines too; won't let the gasket crush all the way.

    It sounded like the exhaust was still leaking. Ticking away when you reved it. I would have run a straight edge across the muffler/header pipes and filed them flat. Also would have added some high temp rtv on both sides of those gaskets. Anyway best of luck.

    An easy way to find and exhaust leak is to tape off the end of the exhaust pipe. Then remove the airfilter. Grab the garden hose and put it in the carburetor fill the engine and exhaust with water and see where it leaks out. I use play dough to fill the leaks. Let it dry to a hard rock. No welding needed.

    Something to add to the diy, use some soapy water in a spray bottle so you can visually see the holes

    Remflex gaskets are 1/8 inch thick and do a great job at sealing uneven flanges. They sell them in sheets so you can cut your own

    One tip...put a 2x4 or hockey puck on the jack pad to keep the jack pad from maring the engine case when you jack up from the rear 👍🏼

    If the flange leaks at the gasket because the flange is warped. If you have a torch heat up the flanges and bend them back at the bolt holes.. when you tighten them they will pull extra hard.

    You can do the same thing with a tig welding bung and a blow gun not as loud as a vacuum cleaner

    Yup 👍, sounds like a proper aircooled veedub greatness again,
    Weld the flanges on the exchanger and flap disk it down get it resurfaced and proper again, you can whimp out and double gasket them, but it’s not a proper fix then!
    Cheers, njoy!

    Glad to hear you have been able to put some miles on. I'm a little nervous about blowing back through the exhaust and that carbon or other debris in the muffler could get blown back into the engine.

    • @ericg4915
      @ericg4915 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I was concerned about possibly doing harm too but after you've exhausted all your time on a visual inspection and tried everything else and still hnsure this is the only accurate way to find out for sure. It's a small risk to take and it's definitely better than running your car with an exhaust leak for a prolonged period of time which is obviously unhealthy for the engine

    I don't have a shop vac but I'm gonna try this with a blower. A blower in idle is probably the same as a shop vac

    That's what happens when people re-use single use gaskets. Once a gasket is torqued, you aren't supposed to use it again. I mean they are a few bucks, spend the money and do the tear down / rebuild / repair right people lol
