I went recently to an exhibition in Berlin. I was really impressed by his early BnW works. Composition of some pics were extremely good. You could notice a deep knowledge before he started to explore color's photography.. Master

Wonderful video Tatiana, I love Eggleston's work both in color and b/w but I was pleasantly surprised to hear of his friendship with William Christenberry who just happens to be another one of my favorite photographers. ❤

Thanks. Food for thought on my b& w quest. I like the color picture with the subject in the corner of the room. That’s a hurray way to make the diagonal lines converge onto the subject. I’m going to try that with a 35mm lens. That’s an idea I’m going to remember. Thanks again. Your shoes are very helpful.

Eggleston 's b&w pic looked like his color pics in b&w, mild ,soft and comforting.
Thanks. Eggleston is my favorite. Somewhere (introduction to Democratic Forest?) he writes that he "monumentalizes the ordinary" or something like that how he glorifies everyday things that he photographs from above like a bird hovering over a scene..
Maybe you've covered it before but I also like the lesser known work such as the early B&W of Diane Arbus which are very different than her color work, the later color work of Vivian Maier using a Leica instead of a Rolliflex and the Fiat Lux photos of different University of California campuses in the 1960's by Ansel Adams.
Also thanks for mentioning Christenberry because I see a chain from Walker Evans to Christenberry to Eggleston, I think that Christenberry was very influential in moving Eggleston from B&W to color. The Ansel Fiat Lux pictures might be an interesting topic.
Yes that’s a great idea (in reference to you mid paragraph) I actually got Maier’s self portrait book and was much interested in seeing her later colour work, maybe I’ll do that at some point and yes I agree there’s a connecting line between them! Thank you so much for watching!

This is great in that I started with B&W then color. Then back to B&W with a Polaroid which was sacrilege in the 70’s!!!! Now for the past 2 years I’ve walked out of the house with my camera set on B&W and only switching to color if it’s warranted!!!!! Thanks!!!

Thanks for another excellent video! I’ve settled on shooting both raw and B&W jpeg’s on my X100V. It feels sometimes like I’ve gone full circle back to the B&W film that I shot, developed and printed back in the ‘70’s … lots of fun memories. @@TatianaHopper Mr Egglestone's connections to others is interesting, He was friendly with Alex Chilton of 'Big Star' and they used some of is photographs as album covers. I seem to recall him being on some of their recordings, can't find a source for that, but he is in the 'Big Star' documentary 'Nothing Can Hurt Me' a man of many talents!

William Eggleston's B/W photography is just as fascinating as his #colorphotography. With the color sliced away, we are left with composition, the subject, the very essence of why #Eggleston captured the subject of that image.

I actually prefer his earlier black and white photography much more than his colour which I never saw any greatness in.

There was no easier way to troll 'professional' photographers in Memphis than by praising Eggleston. They just started howling that he didn't know how to take a picture. Then I'd ask when their next show at Moma or the Louvre was opening.

The first Eggleston's picture you show here has been cropped. The poster thats been cut out from the right corner can give a little more context to this picture...
I noticed that he very rarely photographed people frontally (head-on). It was only from the side and often a 3/4 view.
Anyone know which focal length he used the most for wide shots?

Why do you think there are so many cropped cars in the corners and sides of his pictures? My opinion is that he used them for visual balance.
Excellent video, though after seeing the black and white work it makes me very glad he switched to color. The B&W photos are fine, but nothing special. It’s his understanding and use of color that makes his work sing.

Reflex based on perception of the moment
I would say it depends on the approach / subject / type of photography you’re practising. I’ve seen docs where Meyerowitz goes around shooting out of interest and reflex and instances where Alec Soth prepares his shot and thinks of how to frame it.
Thanks for an interesting and informative video. This photographer’s work I find underwhelming, obviously just an opinion.
