    My sister had the same fire pit. The first time she made a fire there was no air flow. You have to have some gaps in the base in order to get some air to the fire to keep it lit. It looks nice but people are either going to have to pour gasoline on the fire every 20 minutes or keep blowing from the top. We simply removed a couple of rocks from either side of the ring and bingo, the fire did not stop blazing!

      I just installed a cast iron burner into the bottom, attached it to a cheap 12v hair dryer blower. With so many places for the air to be released from, its low flow and doesnt blow my ashes around, and can stoke a fire in a matter of seconds.

    I recently had a Belgard patio, pool deck, and fire pit installed. However, I added a shaped stone ring to the top to give it a more finished look and to give it a wider area around the pit than the Weston stone gives. I also lined the inside with a SoloStove to burn the wood more efficiently, cut down on smoke, and make clean up (ashes) quick and easy! If you're thinking of a stone patio, I can vouch for Belgard!!

    Love the pit system you used, but my concern is with the rain water. Won't it eventually leech its way out on to the patio and bring ash with it staining your nice white patio stones? Would it be better to cut a circle the ID circumference of the pit and dig down a few inches into the soil, then fill it with the granite chips keeping it below grade when you start the first course?

    Consider adding a heavy-duty metal grate on top of the loose granite stone base in the bottomof the pit. Similar look to a kettle grill grate. Only heavier 1/4" - 3/8" diameter rods. This will protect the granite from being removed when you need to clean out the ash.

    @stoneridgelandscapedesign4858 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    We are in the camp of not installing them over pavers. We install the block on the sand bed that the pavers are set on. This allows water to drain right through the base. We find that if you set them on the pavers, it doesn't allow water to drain fast enough, then water mixed with the charcoal can leach out the sides of the block and stain the pavers. I believe it looks better cut into the pavers as well.

    • @SolidOrangePaw
      @SolidOrangePaw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. With the gravel in the fire pit, that hides the mess of liquid ash and overall black muck that will run to the bottom of the pit after the first fire and it rains. Because the pit is on top of the pavers, the muck (at some point once the muck acts like grout in the self draining pavers) will drain down and out across the slope of the patio. Seems like the pavers under the pit need to be removed to allow for the muck drainage into the sand and then through the base into the ground. Seems that would have been simple to do.

    • @jbanks4375
      @jbanks4375 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are correct. I'm building a 200k pool for a homeowner which includes a fire pit. I would never build on top of a nice, twenty thousand dollar travertine deck. It must be placed on the base material and then the deck built around it for percolation. If adding a fire pit after the deck is built, you must remove the decking underneath. FYI

    • @eray9934
      @eray9934 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So is the fire built directly on top of the sand then or do you still put some kind of brick down for the fire to be built on? Also, does the fire pit need to be lined with firebricks or can the typical tumbled concrete blocks take the heat without cracking?

    • @marsproperties994
      @marsproperties994 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Grackle2012 after extended use the pavers under the pit will be completely discolored and look terrible.

  • @ptrckbd
    @ptrckbd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    What about ventilation and cleaning out the pit after using? Thanks for posting the video. I'm in the middle of a pit build now....hence the questions.

    • @_Moto215
      @_Moto215 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How did it turn out? Did you put your pit directly on top of pavers like in the vid? I'm planning a paver patio with pit and sitting wall and I'm debating on putting my fire pit directly on top of the pavers vs. cutting the pavers around the fire pit. If I put it on top of the pavers I'm going to line the bottom with landscape fabric and 4 inches of sand to filter out any dirty water so it does't stain surrounding pavers. The fire pit kit that I'm buying uses a copper bowl on top so fires aren't built inside of the fire pit. Which means I don't need to use liner or firebrick.

    • @Swiftest87
      @Swiftest87 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What did you ultimately end up doing and has it worked? I'm also worried rain would wash the ashes and drain out dirty water from the bottom of the bricks to my concrete patio...

  • @kylehumer2750
    @kylehumer2750 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I want to do this same idea over a existing paver patio and on the Brock paverbase site they recommend filling pit 3/4 with stone... that would mean on a 14” depth fire pit kit ( that I’m eyeing up for purchase) I’d only have 3.5” depth left over to put any firewood in. That sounds like some crazy overkill. Can Anyone speak on this?

  • @justinsouthwick2050
    @justinsouthwick2050 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Great Vid, quick question.
    After time with all the charcoal and soot throughout the 57 stone when it rains won't the water runoff from within the firepit stain the pavers?
