How to Adjust the Spring in a Window Shade

  • The traditional roller window shade is making a comeback after about a 30-year decline in popularity.
    Today's consumer simply doesn't know how window shades work and this is causing many people to believe the window shades they've purchased are inferior or defective.
    This video demonstrates how to tighten the shade spring for proper functioning. (If your problem is with releasing or loosening an over-tightened window shade spring, watch THIS video • How To Release An Over... )
    Window shades provide privacy, add beauty, aid in energy conservation, and are an economical window treatment in both residential and commercial environments.
    Contact Mazer Wholesale, Inc. for great prices when you need to purchase window shades in bulk for your home, investment properties, schools, or business.

    I called Andrew to ask how to loosen the shade spring when tension is to high (shade was very hard to pull down, then wouldn't go back up). He took the time to explain it to me. Old fashion customer service, gotta love it! Thanks Andrew!!!

    Thanks so much! Wouldn't allow me to give another thumbs up, as I viewed it last year when I had an issue, and came back here to check your video out again! I ended up pulling our shade all the way down, and it won't go up, so I assume the tension has gone out completely, so I'll pull the shade, and see if this works. Hoping it's just that, as it was working just fine, then all of a sudden it wouldn't go up at all, which then had me at no more to pull senerio!

      Completely agree! I bought new shades for my childhood bedroom a couple of years ago because the ones in there were all ripped up. One of them was “malfunctioning” but I was too lazy to replace it. Every time I visit my parents it annoys me to see it pulled down. This video just saved me a trip to Home Depot :)

    Here's an easier way to do it. Take a kitchen fork. Put it on the flat metal end of the shade, the same that he showed you, so that the flat metal piece is between the tines of the fork. Hold it tight. And then turn the fork clockwise until you feel a tightening. Just be careful that you don't tighten it too much or hold the fork too loosely because it can spring back on you once you tighten it. But that's a sure, easy way of tightening it and it's the old school way. It's the way I did it growing up ( I am 68) when all the shades were the spring type shades.

Came here to find out how to fix the spring, went back to test the shade, and it's working perfectly! So I fixed it without even realizing it! Haha. Thanks!

    Thank you.. I just bought new roller shades and have been struggling to get the tension.. They are long shades of 70 plus inches and it's quite the curl work out to roll them up over and over.. But enjoy them very much.. love the clean look that roller shades add to my window decor. large windows and i love the view that they offer over other blinds.

  • @themed-tours1342
    @themed-tours1342 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great. Thank mate.. you get a thumbs up. The only thing to add is that the spring latch didn't hold position when I first fitted the flat end (into the middle part of the bracket - with the flat horizonal). But, when I re-fitted the flat end with the flat surface vertical (in the upper side of the bracket) - the latch started working. Maybe it had nothing to do with it working or not - maybe I just accidentally gave it a little jolt. So - all good - just sharing my experience.

    • @mazerwholesale
      @mazerwholesale  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm glad the video helped you. Yes, the biggest thing which makes the shade spring become loose is the bracket. Sometimes that bracket gets bent out of shape and the flat end of the shade spins inside the bracket rather than tighten the spring. Or sometimes it's just not sitting inside the groove properly.

      In order to tighten a totally unwound spring is to hold the shade parallel to the floor. It will not wind up if you hold it vertically. You can also put the shade into the brackets as shown in the video. If it doesn't tighten up, the spring is broken and you must replace it.

    Thanks - this was very helpful. My old privacy blind had no tension at all, and I was able to fix it using this. It seems like the shade doesn't want to stay down - it doesn't always lock into place when I tug on it. Is there a quick fix for that, or is that the sort of thing you'd just replace the shade to correct?

    • @andrewmazer4748
      @andrewmazer4748 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Darnnn, I just realized I never replied to your comment. I'm sorry. If you take the shade out of the bracket and wind up the flat end of the shade (that's the spring-loaded end), then you should be able to turn that flat end clockwise to tighten the spring. Alternatively, you can roll the shade fabric up unto the roller, place the shade back into the bracket, then pull the shade down. As you pull the shade down, you shoud feel some resistance. That resistance is the spring tightening up inside the roller core. If that flat end is frozen stiff, your spring is SHOT. If the flat end just turns and turns and never gets tight, YOUR SPRING IS SHOT.

    How to reverse it? I mean how to make spring back to normal ?

  • @thenexthobby
    @thenexthobby 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have old shades that don’t necessarily stay down, or up, but can be readjusted for either. The issue is that we want the shades to do both equally well, and without frequent tuneups needed. That’s why mini blinds are popular.

    Thanks for the video! I have a quick question- In my case, I am having those vertical slat blinds and I have 2 issues and would greatly appreciate your response!
    (1) In my living room window blinds, only 1 out of the total 9 blinds move when I pull the rope attachment. The remaining 8 blinds just stop moving along with the first one after 2 seconds of pulling my rope attachment so there is this huge gap created when I close the blind and sunlight comes right in.What to do about it?
    (2) For my bedroom window blinds, i ma having the same issue but in this case 4 out of 9 blinds move after pulling the rope attachment. The remaining 5 just won’t move at all after a while so it creates a wide gap and sunlight comes right in. How to solve this issue?
    Thanks ahead of time for your response🙏

    Nice job, Andrew. Being a third generation retailer myself, I enjoyed your little bit of personal history. Plus, as you said, window shades are back, I guess. I grew up with them in the 50's & 60's in my parent's house. Now, we are adding some to our new sunroom that has a few hours of intense sun in the summer. Thank you for your help. M. Could you also made a video on how to loosen the tension ?

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I have researched, to release the tension, simply turn the little tension thing in the opposite direction with your fingers and it will completed release all the tension. Then you'll have to go through his process several times to add the tension back in as he has shown you in this video.

    Hi Andrew! ThAnk you! Just installed mine today and this helped a lot. But my window is above my kitchen since and I can’t reach it if al the way rolled up. I’ll probably keep it partially down most the time anyway- but I wondered if you knew a way ti add a chain or string to it so I could pull it down from the ground if it’s rolled all the way up

    • @robertsimpson4936
      @robertsimpson4936 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a pair of kitchen tongs to reach up and grab the bottom of the shade to pull the shade down over my kitchen sink window. And they do have shade pulls with a various "rope" designs that you can attach to the bottom of the shade.

      Sometimes the old springs go soft so there's nothing you can do. But the technique in the video almost always works. LET ME KNOW!

  • @TF856

    As a child I would see how those blinds were flying up and kept going around and around and losing spring tention.
    So I just left them in the window frame and just rolled them the other direction to tighten up the spring.
    I never needed to take them out of the mouting brackets.

    What about if it doesn’t want to stay down ?

    • @mazerwholesale
      @mazerwholesale  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In your case the problem is most likely caused by your spring being too tight. I made a follow up video on the subject of How to Releaver an Overtightened Shade Spring and you can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/hjzMp7kQL38/w-d-xo.html Try it and let me know how it works for you.

    I took my shade down today and the right side pin is not sticking out anymore. It’s flush to the plastic disc and I don’t know what happened. I don’t think it cracked off. Any ideas or help would be gratefully appreciated.

    • @mazerwholesale
      @mazerwholesale  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching my video. The plastic disc is not really a disc. It's a plug. You can usually pull it out with your fingers but if not, get a flat head screwdriver or a butter knife and pry it out. I don't think you'll be able to use this plug again, but take it to a hardware store where they cut shades. They'll probably GIVE you one free. Good luck. Let me know how it goes. -Andrew
