How in the world does a man find enough time in a lifetime to build such a complex rail system at his own home. I am baffled with the setup this man has. Absolutely incredible to say the least.
This has to be the most amazing and coolest, live steam railroad I have ever seen in my life. The locomotive is really impressive & the length of it and the train is quite incredible. The owner is one very lucky guy. Congratulations mate! Treat BIG BOY, like a woman and she'll give you no grief, as a full size loco driver once said to me. Enjoy your time with her my friend. Best wishes O.K.
As a ho modeler, and a member of a 7 1/2" gauge railroad club this was well worth watching. Thanks for the video, we are all modelers of the same dream.
The work on bringing an actual Big Boy back to life continues in Cheyenne Wyoming and having seen its smaller brother the Challenger running several years ago just wetted the appetite.
This video is my happy place. I cannot recall how many times I’ve watched it. Tom’s creation is truly unrivalled in its magnificence. Sad to see that the railroad will not remain. I’m fortunate in that I live in New Zealand and now we have Tom’s two main locomotives here; Big boy 4005 and k-36 482 (now under the custody of Ian Welsh) having seen both run in person no video of photo ever truly does these locomotives justice. Thank you Shane for bringing the big boy to New Zealand and thank you Jono for recording this fantastic video.
I had an Uncle who was a Fireman out of the Cheyenne yard in the days of Steam. He said if you slide a nickel under each of the drive wheels of a Steam Locomotive, "It ain't goin nowhere". Even a nickel can act as a chock. I love this video; kudos to the Locomotive maker and crew. Also to Jono Marshall. Carry on.
Thank you for videoing this saga (the other videos too). And thank you for sharing your joy. Good luck with your engine, may it bring happiness in it's new home to all who visit.
Nice to see Tom's loco is in good hands. It was an incredible labor of love to build, and a joy to behold. Nice to see footage of the shop at Tom's too.. I miss out visits out there on operating days..
My jaw dropped watching Big Boy roll back onto the track lol. Just amaze at such a setup that just goes on and on. This is such a treat to watch and inspiring.
Sir you have a super piece of equipment and I say this with experience of having pulled the throttle a few times. Take care of it and you will get decades of enjoyment.
Whilst Tom miller’s big boy was built in the UK. It is not the same big boy that ran at Dobwall’s adventure park. That loco is significantly larger and currently resides in pieces in Australia.
Back in around 1998 We went to a Southern Pacific Railway Convention in Portland Oregon .Wow ENCREDIBLE beautiful layout. HE LOVED THE FEATHER RIVER COUYON ON UP RAILWAY he copied this line had working block signals
First of all congrats on your purchase. In my humble opinion the greatest engine steam engines were the 2-8-8-2 Mallet, 2-8-0 Constellation, the famous Day Light from Lima locomotive works in Pa. I'm from New Jersey close to The Pennsylvania boarder and we visit the train museum often. And the best example of any engine is actually my absolute favorite......the Big Boy. What not to love!!!! Have fun and may American heavy iron keep entertaining everyone who comes to your railway park. Use it in good health. A beautiful piece.....I'm very jealous!!!! Rocky New Jersey USA
Hi,To those model engineers and others interested I have posted another video titled "big boy back on track".This is in two parts and covers the transportation of the big boy locomotive from Portland ,Oregon to Tauranga New Zealand and the re gauging of the wheels from 7.5 inches to 7 .25 inches.cheers Shane
James Baxter built by Tom Miller, who also built the railway in addition to tom’s k-36 which is also in New Zealand now. (Owned by Ian Welch) upon arriving in New Zealand the big boy needed to be re-gauged too 7.25 inch gauge track. Shane, Jono and others contributed to the effort. In addition to some other modifications. Big boy ran at Tauranga three times.
Aqui sou o unico livesteamer no BRAZIL PIONEIRO EM MINI FERROVIA COM UMA ESCALA 1/10 NO youtube em FERRLEO OBRIGADO ESTE VÍDEO FOI O MELHOR QUE JA VISUALISEI NESTE MUNDO DOS LIVESTEAMER PARABÉM A TOM MILLER E TODA SUA EQUIPE FANTASTICO !! THANK YOU AND JONO MARSHALL
Boy's, I hadn't seen these video's before tonight. I know what I wanna do when I grow up now; I wanna work on steam engines and never grow up. I would really enjoy coming to visit you guys and learn how this all works.
Boys and the price of their toys, as the saying goes. Ha! Serious disposable income for both buyer and seller, no doubt. Sorry to sound like I'm envious or that I'm holding a bunch of sour grapes. ; ] I've always loved models like this. Fantastic work. I wonder if Tom is a machinist by profession, or just through aptitude and passion. That track work is great, and it must be as painstaking in its own right as the rolling stock builds have to be. I was going to criticize the bridges at first glance, until they got to the one farther out. Cool stuff. I want to find a video about Walt Disney's railroad. He was a major fan. I saw a huge 'coffee table' book all about Walt's railroad, but I haven't had it in my hands. This is passion, realized.
Fabulous video of a fantastic experience. What it must feel like to be in control of such a work of the modeller's art....and to know you're the new owner and can repeat the experience pretty much whenever you'd like to.
I am absolutely in awe of this man's skill if he is the one who built it? Would have been nice to know a little bit about him and the beautiful estate where this was filmed???
Did a little digging. This loco was built between 1979 and 1982. It weighs 2000 pounds and the tender waighs 800 pounds. It is 17 feet long and offered for sale at $245,000 though no telling what it actually sold for but I am guessing close....WOW
What a locomotive! Sincerely hope that you have many years of enjoyment with it. Why are your two videos. "Big Boy back on track parts one and two not available in the UK?
Wow! I have seen clips of this running on Tom's home line when he hosted an open day for the NMRA. Might have to make a journey to Tauranga next time I come to NZ to see it in action. I believe the loco was made here in Pomgolia?
struck2soon I had the fine pleasure of riding behind this, and other locos, for many years.. It was a wonderful day when we visited Tom's.... all sold off now.
I was loving this until the music started 20:45 stops at 28:45 starts 31:13 Texaco advert then more music..Nooooooooooooo, 36:19 music end, Other than that Great stuff
I wish I knew she was 4 sale, guess I will need to go down under to see her run. I can see the real 4005 too its a lot closer. The real 4005 took a nasty spill split a switch and laid on her side, late in there life but was fixed and lived till the end. I know that no one here ever thought we would see a real one run, but 4014 will soon.
Yes I wish I had the time to visit 4005 in Denver when I collected my loco from Tom.I will visit this magnificent loco when next in your beautiful country.
Very impressive locomotive. I thought it is built for 7 1/2 gauge track, and most clubs around you have 7 1/4 gauge track. Are you going to re gauge it?
Yes I am in the process of re gauging the loco with new tyres. Will post photos on the Tauranga Model Marine and Engineering clubs website in due course.
That is a big under taking! Looking forward to seeing more videos. I am sure many guys would find it interesting to see a video of the new tyres being fitted. Best of luck
the loco and tender were built under a commission for its previous owner by world renowned model makers Severn Lamb in the UK.It took 3 men 16000 hours between 1979 and 1982
Hi Jon,I will post a detailed update with photos on Tauranga model marine and engineering clubs website shortly. The re gauging has gone better than expected and I can push the loco around my clubs track including curves with a tighter radii. Now concentrating on boiler compliance which could take a month or two.Thankyou for your interest,Shane
Hi to anyone interested,My friend Murray posted a video and photos on. You Tube of my locomotives first run at my clubs track situated at Memorial Park in Tauranga New Zealand.A number of matters to resolve with the firing but the regauging from American 7.5 inch. Gauge to British 71/4 inch gauge was perfect. No Derailments to binding of flanges on curves.enjoy. th-cam.com/video/S_w7_OxbOig/w-d-xo.html&feature=share Cheers Shane
Beautiful trains. Beautiful landscaping. Extraordinary craftsmanship. And you ruined the entire experience of hearing that 4005 BigBoy with some crappy music. It's your video, but that's the only reason I am not giving it a like. I'm not going to dislike it from spite. But this would have been the best steam train video on TH-cam if you just hadn't added the music. The train is the music.
The music was perfect. There was this little club at griffith park here in LA called "live steamers". My father would take me on consecutive saturdays for years when I was a boy. Sadly it is not there anymore as of a few years ago, but upon hearing "big hard sun" and watching the ride, I was back there 30 years ago on a saturday. Thank you so much.
How in the world does a man find enough time in a lifetime to build such a complex
rail system at his own home. I am baffled with the setup this man has. Absolutely incredible to say the least.
Seriously the bridge and the tunnel.
If I had the space and money to do this, you bet I would
When it is something you love, you make the time.
This has to be the most amazing and coolest, live steam railroad I have ever seen in my life. The locomotive is really impressive & the length of it and the train is quite incredible. I love the craftsmanship that goes into these "mini" steam powered monsters
Great fun to drive them.
The work on bringing an actual Big Boy back to life continues in Cheyenne Wyoming and having seen its smaller brother the Challenger running several years ago just wetted the appetite.
Honestly , this is one of my favorite videos on You tube ! . love the content and the music . Thank You ...

Really cool so they are still running? Shame to not see any new videos.

this is absolutely amazing garden railway. wide, long & beautiful view. Incredible!
Wonderful that your transfer table is long enough to accommodate the 4005. Great video!
My jaw dropped watching Big Boy roll back onto the track lol. Just amaze at such a setup that just goes on and on. This is such a treat to watch and inspiring.
The Track / Scenery / Yard / Estate /Property Is Unbeleivably awsome
That is one nice Big Boy 4-8-8-4 thanks for sharing hope you enjoy you're fine locomotive.
Glad it has been well documented in the video. It is a work of mechanical engineering art.
Sir you have a super piece of equipment and I say this with experience of having pulled the throttle a few times. Take care of it and you will get decades of enjoyment.
What a beast - and a hugely impressive estate too. Good ol' Yanks - never do things by halves...! :-)
I have many happy memories of riding behind that locomotive at Dobwalls
Whilst Tom miller’s big boy was built in the UK. It is not the same big boy that ran at Dobwall’s adventure park. That loco is significantly larger and currently resides in pieces in Australia.
Finding out that this property was being sold , I can relate to the choice of Songs ! , Thank You for sharing a fine video .
Thanks for uploading this video and for maintaining such a massive engine. It deserves a great live steam park like you have. Congratulations mates !
You must be a happy man. Thanks for sharing,Jon.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, thanks for sharing!!
this is extraordinarily unique.just to imagine tye time and effort that went into it's construction is amazing.
yes the detail is truly amazing nothing else like it in the world I believe in 1.6 inch scale for a Big Boy
Back in around 1998 We went to a Southern Pacific Railway Convention in Portland Oregon .Wow ENCREDIBLE beautiful layout. HE LOVED THE FEATHER RIVER COUYON ON UP RAILWAY he copied this line had working block signals

How many MPH/ KMH was this train actually going when filmed??
15 people are haters because they don't have such an awesome piece of machinery.
And now the real big boy is running the main line again.
To bad 3985 won't run for awhile. I'm trying to imagine those two behemoths double head, that would be a sight to see!
Looking forward to seeing this at Memorial Park. will be an impressive sight. Might be the closest I will get to the real thing.
the big boy is my favorite locomotive
Very nice locomotive. I've always wanted one for years. Each time I've looked for one, nothing. Where do you buy them from?
2:45 That's a very well-deatiled model! how long did it take to build, and how old is it?
refer below
How long is this locomotive
when you get that job do you have to make your own train? or you can pick what train you want to drive?
Now this is one Serious Toy. Would love to see it run.
How much does it weigh?
Ssshee wouldd have some decent tractive effort i think

Very nice
The slandered gauge on is probably 1,000 times bigger.
Is this from Oregon or Washington? I ask because of the SP&S boxcar. SP&S isn't modeled very much.
Sherwood oregon
Very impressive locomotive. I thought it is built for 7 1/2 gauge track, and most clubs around you have 7 1/4 gauge track. Are you going to re gauge it?

How much do one of these Big Boys cost?
what are the specs? and what is the price?
How long is this Union Pacific Big Boy Locomotive
It'd be a great video if not for that fisheye lense on the camera.
the real 4005 is in the Forney Transportation Museum, Denver, Colorado
its sister 4004 is in Cheyenne, Wyoming
how long did it tack you to build it?
the loco and tender were built under a commission for its previous owner by world renowned model makers Severn Lamb in the UK.It took 3 men 16000 hours between 1979 and 1982
Why did he sell his gorgeous big boy Locomotive?

Its a shame that this now sits in a shed and has been used 3 times in the last 3 years
What I don 't understand is why people stopped running the Big Boys on the Live Steamers?

ALL ABOARD??? it's got a freight manifest.
Secret Liaisons - We are all freight eventually.
you need to change your heading from down under to kiwi land
the heading should be the land of the long white cloud
I would’ve love to hear what the train actually sounds like instead of the music
Such a shame they run on gas and not coal.
It was a great video till the music started!!!!
though the vids a little old rule number for youtube vids, never read off a script
You can the music next time.Whe want to hear the bog boy.
my son did the clip as I have no skill in these matters. Trade off have the music or nothing at all -which would you prefer ?
