Hahaha BEST comment here. I didn't realize the difference between them until now. When Sam spends too much time brilliantly laying out his argument, Bill feels the urge to punch up the conversation with one-liners to get an audience reaction LOL
"I find myself consistently agreeing with Sam Harris." Thats funny, I find myself more and more surrounded by morons who are anxious to eat the popular shit sammwich anti-muslim anti-SJW hysteria instead of thinking for themselves.
justin vaughn That sucks but it's probably not as bad as being surrounded by morons who can't distinguish between reasonable concerns about Islamism and anti-Muslim bigotry (e.g. Ben Affleck).
@Double Shrekt, do you think that Sam holds that same view? I'm also skeptical of your claim that Ayaan wants to kill every Muslim. Can you cite a source so I can check it out for myself? I did a quick search and couldn't find anything to that theme.
No one is standing up for Islamism. They're quite articulate in detailing the distinctions between peaceful Muslims and the fringe minority of radicals who take the writings literally and act violently. They're criticizing the fundamentalists and saying they need reform, that's not standing up for them. We *are* standing up for religious freedom though, and those who practice without harming others should not be subjected to persecution just because some bad apples are ruining it for them. They explain that it's a war of ideas and I hope people listening understand, that in order to truly defeat terrorism we need to win the minds of extremists and reform their thinking from being radical.
Ben Affleck needs to sit down. He thinks he is smarter than what he is. I watched that segment and cringed at his elitism and looking down at Sam Harris. What a joke Ben is.
@@rahulgoswami3691 Or at least be educated in the subject matter lol. Great callback from Sam, Ben was acting so emotionally simple and petulant in that previous segment,
That's what weasly sycophantic asshats have said about Mussolini, Ayn Rand and a million other militant asshats for thousands of years. Are you a latino, Alejandro? Sam says Arabs should walk in seperate lines in airports, do you want to walk in seperate lines in airports too next time a bomb goes off in Colombia or some other country you don't live in? No? Then its time for you to shut the fuck up.
Critical of all, forgives Judaism, lets Christians slide, but goes balls deep into Islam. Judaism isn't the "motherload" of bad ideals, is it? We aren't at war with Christianity, are we? No, these "criticisms" are reserved exclusively for Islam and Muslims. Real intellectual? Noam Chomsky?
I think we can all agree no country causes more suffering than the US government. Pick a continent. If you want to turn a blind eye to the US government, how can you ignore China? (Christians, Tibet, female infanticide, slavery, organ harvesting, etc..) Name this Muslim state that started a war without the direct support of the US government? Yes, when I see a bomb go off, I know it's a Muslim before it's investigated, like in Quebec... Back in 1992, my mother worked at an abortion clinic in Pensacola, FL. She needed a bulletproof vest to protect her from Muslims, right? Just so you know, US banking law is pretty much Jewish law word for word. Forgiveness of debt after 7 years, Sabbatical year... Jews performing felatio on children because they have perverted US law to overlook raping children for Jews. The mass torture and slaughter of animals for religious ceremony (Kaporos). You have no understanding of reality, your post is completely devoid of facts that do not involve Muslims negatively.
I see. I'm talking to a white supremacist. Only white people do good and all things good come from white people. I've read enough. Chomsky normal form is still taught and used every single day in computing.
Cut the shit. I've read and heard these arguments for years from white supremacists. There's a website dedicated to this bullshit, it's called Stormfront. I don't care to hear this stupid shit. Good luck.
Mechanical Fix it's because you know less than he does. this is why you can't find anything that is wrong. but everything he says is cheery picked and one sided. none of this commentators know what islam is about, they only see Arabs and fucking burkas... 1 in 5 Muslims are Arabs or even from middle East. but if it suits your argument by all means keep selling books.
Theaikro if it's all cherry picked and bs what would you propose to resolve the migrant crisis in Europe and to help stop people from blanketing all Muslims as extremist? Islam is a problem and non-Muslims are clearly part of the problem too, so what do we do? How do we co-exist? It's easy to tell the West that we need to be more "understanding and accepting" of Islam, what do we say to Muslims now? Because they're NOT all innocent in this obvious problem plaguing the world. Go!
Your approach and thinking is all wrong. 1. You talk about islam like it is one unison body. It isnt. There are deep cultural and historical wounds between people and nations in middle east and central asia. There arent two countries that are the same. Literally all of them have different laws, cultures and histories. The only think they have in common is their religion, Islam. But even there there are differences. Sunni, Shia, Ahmedis, secularists, communists and wahabbists. Two of which are in immense power and influence: Saudis with Wahabbism and Iran (Although Iran is more about geopolitical influence and less about religion). A muslim from Pakistan will not have the same ideas as one from Saudi or Iran or Egypt, or Indonesia or India and so on and on. There are so many layers that it is impossible under any circumstance to use the word "Muslims" or "Islam" to describe all of these nations and people. 2. Migrant crisis did not happen all of the sudden. Its an effect. Every time there is war in one country there will be inevitable refugees. Now I dont think i have to tell you the difference between immigrants and refugges do I? Lets see, before the syrian civil war...how many Syrian refugees did we had? Do you see the pathern? Also only a fraction of Syrian refugees are comming to Europe. The vast majority are in neighboring countries. US who are complaining the most are so far taken less than 1500 refugees compared to Millions that are in Lebanon. hundred of thousands in Turkey etc. 3. How we can avoid having refugrees? Lets start by not "helping" them with our military....omg. Do you remember the days when we cared so much about Iraqis and afghans and Syrians that we had this moral obligation to free them from regimes we previously had armed and helped to suppress their population? Now we cared so much that We just Had to free them by bombing their country and starting wars... How can you honestly put any blame on muslims here? They didnt start war with you? Iraq didnt bomb the west. The government of Afghanistan came begging you for help with warning about Talibans but you completely ignored them and let them be. All they asked for was help and weapons to fight Taliban. The same taliban you were training and arming trough pakistan. Later you went and start bombing them to freedom. Syria didnt bomb or pose any threat to the west, yet you destroyed their country. Lets not BS ourself here.... "oh the muslims were fighting there bla bla" NO. You removed a communist inspired secular Saddam and opened the flood gates to hell. The west and US have been in war with middle east for 15 years! Have any of you felt like your life was in danger? Did you felt like it was a war? Well for people in middle east every fucking day it war. Real War. So my conclusion is please put yourself in their position and tell me what you would have done? And then see what wast majority of muslims are actually doing? Are they hating on you? Miraculously they still think you are okey. Is there extremists who are terrorists? Yes, but lets not pretend the few that hate you do so without any reason.

kirked007 Because he SOUNDS logical. But in reality, he is deeply hypocritical. Look at his previous comments on America and terror. Look up his conversation with Chomsky.
Royk - I've never heard Chomsky condone terrorist atrocities, nor does he excuse their behavior. You seem to be confusing trying to determine what factors motivate a set of actions with excusing those actions.
Royk LOOK. Look at this loser using every snarl word he can against Chomsky. That is literally the number one tactic of his 'opponents'. I'm sorry, maybe your bullshit string of accusations may have worked back during the Iraq War when the only scale we knew how to measure with was 'ultra-patriot' or 'terrorist sympathizer' but right now all you have done is prove how blind and stupid you are.
Royk HAHAHAH 'ad hominem'. Please. Nice regurgitation of Harris' damage control. Harris went online and said that America had the right to bomb medicine manufacturers because he though we are "a well-intentioned giant". What a fucking crock. Dick Cheney would be laughing historically to hear the blatant, pro-Iraq war propaganda repeated. Sam Harris IS a hypocrite, one who pretends to apply rationality to political and social discourse but pretends to be that fucking naive about history. He is a neo-con dressed up as a liberal thinker. I am a "former" unforgiven sinner because of Jesus Christ. Hi, Brother! Sam Harris cannot help you face a holy God ( The perfection of Moral Justice) " Unforgiven" and come through it without being banished to outer darkness, where God has no choice but to let a sinner take themselves, by their unbelief. So take the next step and come to the only one who can save your soul and keep you safe after death. John 14:6 New International Version (NIV) 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Acts 10:42 V VV He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. Sam Harris cannot help you pass through this judgement, which will consume any who deny the truth about Jesus ( The Gospel Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and lead them to everlasting destruction shut out from the presence of the Lord. Matthew 11:28-30 New International Version (NIV) 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” "Have mercy on me oh God a sinner!" and you will be saved ! if you believe what Jesus said! Not Sam Harris!
Well as a Muslim for life I wanna say good for you. When and if you're alone someday and in a lot of shit I hope Sam Harris comes and saves you from whatever shit you're in.
Sam needs to work on his short-form commentary. TV shows like this require you to get through discussions really briefly, and you have to compress your ideas to actually get ideas through in time.
To be honest they have the same beliefs so it's a conversation not a debate. In that reference I enjoyed it though I'm not in any sense a liberal or on the left.

Ricardo Rodriguez Well, it's tough to read Bostrom's Superintelligence book and not be at least a little worried. The book's very thorough in it's logic. Harris is far from the only one sounding the alarm that we may see a real threat from this, if not in our lifetimes than our children's.

The current loudest liberals should actually be called the "regressive left". The left should represent all the ideals of equality (regardless of race, gender, sexual preference, etc.) and freedom (speech, religion, association, you name it...) yet once you disagree with certain issues like the way to address the Islamic World they won't even let you speak, they'll censor you, shout at you, isolate you and to put a cherry on top, they'll call you names (inbred, bigot, racist... and that's even if you identify as a liberal and agree with more than 80-90% of what a liberal should follow). I just don't understand why feminists on the Western World take the muslims under their wings, seriously, ones like to have their women use burkas and hijabs, while the other ones have "Free the nipple" marches.
True liberals would agree with them. However, modern "liberals," the leftists and progressives that comprise much of the Democratic party, would condemn that as racists and bigots. There are a lot of ben Afflecks and cenks out there.
The Democratic Party has swung more towards authoritarian in recent years. Both parties have done this from generation to generation. They go libertarian to authoritarian and back. Remember, left vs right is what you want done, and up and down is how you believe it should be done (voluntarily vs forcefully). Becauses the current generation on the left want force over debate (upper left near the Marxists), they simply want to take power from those that have it and distribute it from the bottom up.
I come from post-communist country and I have to say you can´t be more wrong. I am lucky to be born after it fell, but many older people in my country were sometimes not allowed to go to college simply because they were religious. I would like to see you tell them how atheists see all people as allies, when they were seen as enemy of our great communist country just because they were Catholic. Yes, some atheists are moral and good people who have no problem with other people, despite their different beliefs, but there are also some who can even kill in name of atheism.
But all I see is atheist Liberals championing for Islam along with their Islamist friends. I think that is amoral. And don't drag Christianity in the picture each time you want to save Islam's ass.

I am a Pakistani-Australian atheist and I admire Sam Harris. I lean towards the Left on almost all issues EXCEPT the Left's take on Islam (real liberals like Harris and Maher are exception, not the rule, unfortunately). MY 5-CENTS ON THE SUBJECT: Western world has had a profound impact on the whole planet and leads in everything one can think of. Western scholars, Universities, ideas, technology, Hollywood, art, and culture constitute a force that dwarfs everything else of its kind and has literally shaped the planet. Much of that substance in West's power comes from Western liberals (no offence to conservatives but one professor at Harvard carries the intellectual weight 1000 truck drivers in Missouri... MIT, Silicon Valley, Apple, Google, Microsoft, UC Berkley, Nobel Prizes and Hollywood are not in Kansas, Kentucky or Mississippi; almost same can be said of most Western countries). IF Western liberals wanted to take part in modernising and reforming Islam, they can do it two decades. This may sound exaggeration because people tend to underestimate the influence of West on everyone else. From Pakistani boys in villages playing cricket during the day and watching Hollywood shows during night, to Vietnamese brides wearing white dresses on their weddings to people eating KFC in Argentina to leaders of Kenya and Mozambique conducting diplomatic talks in English language, Western culture is becoming the default culture of the planet. I was raised in Pakistan and believe me Western liberals (both scholars and artists) have audiences, platforms and ways to shape people's opinions. Not to mention the whole project of reforming Islam is completely in line with liberal values; for example, what is more feminist than freeing women from burkas. Despite all this, the reluctance of liberals to speak up in support of this project, or even worse their tendency to speak AGINST this project, is mind boggling. Western conservatives appear to have will to support this project but they don't have audience or platforms. This is why this conversation between Harris and Maher, both staunch liberals, is so important. -- Comment was edited later on for grammatical errors only.
The western left that you are describing are standing on the shoulders of giants - The Christian west. Your liberals are only able to succeed because of the culture and society brought about by 1,600 years of Christianity in Europe.
Very good points but the west is great not only because of its liberal artists but because of its conservative scientists and businesspeople. The former are failing in their duty to serve as ambassadors for our culture.
secallen Conservative scientists!!!? Lols. Have you ever been on a University campus? Well over 90% of the best STEM scientists are liberals. And greater the contribution of a scientist, more likely liberal they are. There have been surveys from University professors of all disciplines on their political opinions, which you can Google easily. While in the ENTIRE population of scientists, there are only 65% liberal but if you poll only from most best of the best scientists who are the leaders of their disciplines, you will notice that 90% liberals. This is true for most disciplines in STEM and humanities. The one exception is Business related departments, where liberal and conservative are about 50-50. Interestingly, you are not the first person making the claim of 'conservative scientists'. Apparently in the bubble of Breitbart, alternative facts and alternatively reality, this notion is quite popular and widely accepted. Welcome to the real world!

I don't think the origins of Islamic fundamentalism are deniable; colonialism and Cold War proxyism certainly laid fertile soil for all sorts of extremism. However, these two do mention that obvious truth, but continue the conversation forward. It isn't about whether Islam is the primary reason for a problem in any particular country or the whole world even. It is much more about the ethical and political conflict with sharia law potentially disallowing freedom of any particular person. Like argued in this video, there are core belief system divisions between what I would call Western values, (open public expression for both sexes being a prime example), and the related tenets of Islamic culture. This represents the real problem. It isn't about whether Islam is the prime causal reason for any problem. It's much more about the fundamental disagreement with someone who requires terms of law and life that I consider limiting on human rights. Many of those someones follow the Koran. Of course, that isn't to say that there are not lingering and serious rights issues in the West as well. But to pretend there are not grave injustices committed worldwide continuously with Islam touted by the perpetrators as a primary motivation is just groundless.

The Sam Harris podcast is just essential. He allows more room for thought, discussion, disagreement, with more intelligence, rationality, sanity, humor, and humanity than just about anyone else out there. He gives me hope.
I am a liberal and I am allergic to leftist cultists who are critical of religion only when it is not Islam. These people are completely opposite of what liberal values stand for and are a threat to liberalism. More liberals need to speak out against this hypocrisy, this is what is pushing the moderates to desperate measures and turn to conservatives for help because we refuse to even acknowledge, let alone resolve, the cultural crisis posed by Islamist fundamentalism, and by that I don't mean terrorists but many Muslim countries, sects and people that are against democracy, equality and freedom of speech.
Schneider W i 100% agree! I think a lot of these leftists can’t separate critique of Islam with the blatant anti Muslim scare tactics present on the right. It’s honestly something that took me awhile to get out of as well.
guys take a look at what they do to harris, other liberals who are sticking to sanity -- they don't want you. this whole thing has become so polarized it's hard to see how it's even sustainable.
Schneider W Wow. Looks like there are some intelligent liberals other than Sam and Bill after all. Kudos brother from a Mexican Conservative Trump supporter.
And just like that, I'm a fan of Sam Harris. I'd almost forgotten what it's like to hear someone speaking reasonably and intelligently on a matter of public importance.
Just recently began watching "Real Time" and i love how every opinion seems to be based on facts, rather than emotion. If only every talk-show/news media/politician followed such standards. . .
Carlin identified the left as the surprising and insidious enemy of free speech, with PC to match and replace the RC (religious correctness) that went after Lenny Bruce and himself in the 60s and 70s. Near the end of his life he diagnosed the left as having an attitude of 'Big White Daddy knows best', despising their condescending paternalism and coddling.
Jack Daniel I'm pretty sure if he was lying about something like this he would have been met with a massive amount of backlash. Hell, given the recent implementation of "alternative facts", I'm surprised he didn't receive more backlash despite telling the truth.
www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/donald-j.-trump-statement-on-preventing-muslim-immigration I like the part: Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on.
+Ryan P Trump called for a muslim ban you can read it from a transcript of an interview Pence and Trump did while still running. He did try and change it up and said "So you call it territories. OK? We're gonna do territories" to translate the idea here, based on the context of the question and responses given, is we will call it whatever you like but I want to ban Muslims. "Lesley Stahl: Let's talk about-- some of the issues. Because there seems to be some daylight between you two, and we can just tick-- go quickly through these. Immigration. Mr. Trump, you have called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States. Do you agree with that? Mike Pence: I do. In fact, in Indiana we suspended the Syrian refugee program in the wake of the terrorist attack. We have no higher priority than the safety and security of the people of this country, and Donald Trump-- Lesley Stahl: Now-- Mike Pence: --is right to-- Lesley Stahl: --in December-- Mike Pence: --articulate that view. Lesley Stahl: --in December you tweeted, and I quote you, "Calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. are offensive and unconstitutional." Donald Trump: So you call it territories. OK? We're gonna do territories. We're gonna not let people come in from Syria that nobody knows who they are. Hillary Clinton wants 550 percent more people to come in than Obama-- Lesley Stahl: So you-- Donald Trump: --who doesn't know what he's-- Lesley Stahl: --so you're changing-- Donald Trump: --so we're going to-- Lesley Stahl: --your position. Donald Trump: --no, I-- call it whatever you want. We'll call it territories, OK? Lesley Stahl: So not Muslims? Donald Trump: You know-- the Constitution -- there's nothing like it. But it doesn't necessarily give us the right to commit suicide, as a country, OK? And I'll tell you this. Call it whatever you want, change territories, but there are territories and terror states and terror nations that we're not gonna allow the people to come into our country. And we're gonna have a thing called "Extreme vetting." And if people wanna come in, there's gonna be extreme vetting. We're gonna have extreme vetting. They're gonna come in and we're gonna know where they came from and who they are. Mike Pence: You just asked me--if I'm comfortable with that-- Mike Pence: --and I am. What-- what Donald-- Lesley Stahl: You're on the same-- Mike Pence: Which-- Lesley Stahl: --page on that?" So that said this EO is the start of said ban Trump claimed he would do.
Always liked Sam. Guy is a force for good. He confirmed it when he eventually decided to put his podcast behind a paywall but told anyone who couldnt afford it to email him to get a free subscription.
"win the war of ideas" is assuming middle eastern theocracies believe that extremist individualism, constant competition, human nature is inherently egotistical, rational and self-interested that is engrained in classical liberalism is the better system. The ideology has a lot of downsides, and people don't realize just how establishing a US liberal democracy type would crush traditions and culture within these middle eastern countries.
Doesn't Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Iran not flourish with extreme (hidden) individualism, constant competition, egotistical self-interest, as well as being fully consumed by capitalism? Men and women in those regions are very educated, love plastic surgery and their culture could not be stronger.
Caracre iran is a theocracy ruled by a supreme leader, saudi arabia is ruled under sharia law and UAE is an absolute monarchy. None of those is a liberal democracy.
Krypt Sanies so what happens if it is an aboriginal tribe who believes in communitarianism and praises gods? Wouldn't Imposing western liberal values go completely against the fabric of their culture, therefore dissolving it? You are assuming US type liberal democracies is the best system for all cases. That is a trend for americans that shows how powerful Adam Smith/John Locke ideology is rooted in them.
Diego 787b Again as long as it abides by secular, liberal, values it is fine. Cultural relativism is inherently very dangerous. 'Who are we to judge what the 'other' do' type thinking indicates a broken moral compass. Suppose an aboriginal tribe has an ancient tradition from a deeply held religious belief going back thousands of years that the 2nd born son of every woman is to be stabbed in the heart after birth in a public gathering. Do you think we should respect their beliefs?
I love these two men too much. I am often frustrated with these pendulum swinging views, to-ing and fro-ing, blaming and brining up irrelevant retorts, there are far too few individuals who embody centred, rational and peace-loving worldviews in general these days. You are my heroes.
The majority of Americans wouldn't elect him, if he ran for the office because they are not Freethinkers. It takes rationality to see through things clearly and apparently most people don't. I think he's still doing a lot more on stage though.
@@mengistumayardit1805 we should be careful when we're saying that people don't do x because they don't think for themselves. It seems fallacious, partially from a no true scotsman context, but moreso from a context of absurdity, to claim that freethinkers would do x, and if one does -x they aren't a freethinker.
Brilliant show, well spoken and to the point!!!!!!!!..I wish more could understand the simplicity of this topic that many should follow but sadly, many don't!!
Sam always nails it perfectly. Progressivism should be rooted in objectively correct values, not in some general notion of acceptance towards all traditions and cultures

I like the calmness of Sam .
He meditates. A Lot! That probably has Something to so with IT as Well. (He also has a Meditation App that I recommend If you too want to be more calm)
It fools people into thinking he's being very logical, but tons of his arguments, and "thought" experiments, are appeals to emotion.
As he said in a conversation with Douglas Murray: "I don't have this gear of ire that you can summon amidst the conversation. That part of my brain was maybe damaged by too much meditation."
I like my covert racism given to me in a calm voice. Bigot ASMR, that's the good stuff.
@@joshknightfall Forgive me, but how is Islamaphobia racism? I fail to make that connection. Unless, of course, you're referring to the middle east, at which point I will remind you that there are more muslims in Indonesia then the Middle East.
Bill seems to be fueled by the applause and approval of his audience, whereas Harris is empowered purely by the edict of logic.
Hahaha BEST comment here. I didn't realize the difference between them until now. When Sam spends too much time brilliantly laying out his argument, Bill feels the urge to punch up the conversation with one-liners to get an audience reaction LOL
Timg95 Shocking, the comedian cares more about the audience reaction than the author

That is the mark of a reasonable person.
"I find myself consistently agreeing with Sam Harris." Thats funny, I find myself more and more surrounded by morons who are anxious to eat the popular shit sammwich anti-muslim anti-SJW hysteria instead of thinking for themselves.
What do you mean when you use the term Anti-Muslim?
justin vaughn That sucks but it's probably not as bad as being surrounded by morons who can't distinguish between reasonable concerns about Islamism and anti-Muslim bigotry (e.g. Ben Affleck).
@Double Shrekt, do you think that Sam holds that same view? I'm also skeptical of your claim that Ayaan wants to kill every Muslim. Can you cite a source so I can check it out for myself? I did a quick search and couldn't find anything to that theme.
please let's not prioritize standing up for Islamism just to oppose Trump. let's think critically.
Taimoor Qamar umm. whoever reads the comments on TH-cam? yes. that's it.
Col. Hans Landa which issues specifically?
You know what they say, Republicans are the Party of No Ideas, and Democrats are the party of Bad Ideas. LMAO

(Christians, Tibet, female infanticide, slavery, organ harvesting, etc..)
Name this Muslim state that started a war without the direct support of the US government?

Man, Harris absolutely smashed this. Didn't find a single point that wasn't reasonable.
I'm both blazed and confused by this reply.
Go!
Mechanical Fix Other than the "Muslim ban" that's not a Muslim ban.

How can you disagree with Sam Harris? Measured, calm, reasonable.
kirked007 Because he SOUNDS logical. But in reality, he is deeply hypocritical. Look at his previous comments on America and terror. Look up his conversation with Chomsky.
Sam invited the Noam Choadsky to have a conversation with him on his podcast & Choadsky wouldn't do it.
He condemns Saudi when human rights organizations do, but leaps up at any chance to defend Israel against the same humanist organizations, in defiance of the world's judgment. Fuck you for your misleading and cliche lies about Chomsky, and fuck Harris for having the gall to pretend to give a shit about rationality.

John 14:6 New International Version (NIV)
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Acts 10:42
V VV
He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.
Sam Harris cannot help you pass through this judgement, which will consume any who deny the truth about Jesus ( The Gospel Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and lead them to everlasting destruction shut out from the presence of the Lord.
Matthew 11:28-30 New International Version (NIV)
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Sam needs to work on his short-form commentary. TV shows like this require you to get through discussions really briefly, and you have to compress your ideas to actually get ideas through in time.
It's a live show. Bill has to push the conversation forward. Philosophers like Sam don't compress their explanations by default.
To be honest they have the same beliefs so it's a conversation not a debate. In that reference I enjoyed it though I'm not in any sense a liberal or on the left.

@@88mphDrBrown can you give an example? I think most people who know a thing or two about U.S. foreign policy are quick to admit dumb mistakes have been made. Sam’s only point is that intent matters.
@@88mphDrBrown I think racism is a good analogy here. The U.S has much to atone for, but people seem to think America is especially bad. Like racism doesn’t exist anywhere else. Lol which demonstrates how little people know about the world.
I am a liberal atheist. I agree with what they are saying. Doesn't every liberal? I don't get it.
I just don't understand why feminists on the Western World take the muslims under their wings, seriously, ones like to have their women use burkas and hijabs, while the other ones have "Free the nipple" marches.
this comment perfectly demonstrates how identifying yourself with a group is problematic.
True liberals would agree with them. However, modern "liberals," the leftists and progressives that comprise much of the Democratic party, would condemn that as racists and bigots. There are a lot of ben Afflecks and cenks out there.
standing up for liberal values has become a form of racism, colonialism, white supremacy its gone to far and the left is a snake eating its tail.

I would like to see you tell them how atheists see all people as allies, when they were seen as enemy of our great communist country just because they were Catholic. Yes, some atheists are moral and good people who have no problem with other people, despite their different beliefs, but there are also some who can even kill in name of atheism.

His ancestors were not actually Muslim if you go back further than the 6th century in which the fantasy stories of Islam were invented. In fact, going back all the way to his first human ancestor it becomes clear that less than a fraction of 0.001% of his ancestors was Muslim.

Bill does this with every guest. Makes me crazy

You shut up.
First, it's Bill show. Second, it's a conversation, not an interview.
All other socio-political opinions aside - any "feminist" who attacks Ayaan Hirsi Ali immediately loses all credibility, in my perspective.
Beyond credibility. You lose any and all attention I would even bother to pay to you. If you know her life story, you know how hard it's been for her. To dismiss her perspective is absolute madness
Sarsour is a savage animal and does not represent on any level a rational woman.
Ayaan is a lier, a pawn used by the radical right to take anti immigration stances without backlash. Her alliance to them gives them legitimacy to speak on immigration, political correctness when in fact she herself is the product of emotional instability. I would be less harsh on her if she didn't keep insisting FGM is an islamic problem, but a cultural issue that has been inherited through generations of dogmatic stone age practices
@@upthevilla4281 - Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a brilliant balanced woman. Islam adopts anything that is destructive, including FGM. If you believe she lied, explain why? If you believe like Linda Sarsour that she deserves violence, then explain why?
@@lacedemonians if you were in the netherlands during the whole dispute over her history, youd know how destructive and self serving she is.
She doesnt deserve violence. She deserves not to be put on a pedestal for her misrepresentations which have been validated as false. Fgm is an issue in AFRICAN countries. Also FGM never gets as much attention as circumcision. Wonder why hmm
The nuance in this conversation is exactly what we need.
Most people want to get into their tribes...they let their beliefs dictate "facts", rather than facts informing what they believe.
I agree adam, just because sam harris uses a lot of big words that idiots cant follow does mean his brand of tribalism is nuanced LOL. Poor fucking retards.

He's an extremely intelligent person, with no religious bias, and a genuine care for Humanity's future. Mr. Harris should run for President in four years. If the dictatorship has been overthrown before then.
Lol, Sam is an atheist. I won't say we won't ever elect a president who openly doesn't believe in God, but we are NOWHERE NEAR that point yet.
Not only is he an atheist, but he's an intellectual who tends to deal in facts and not feelings. You and I will never ever see a man like this become president.
Also if Trump is a dictator then the stories I have been hearing about some federal judge temporarily halting his immigration orders must be lies.
Yeah, obviously I was kidding around with the dictator thing. He's got the personality for it. At this point, I honestly wouldn't care if a President is atheist, but I'm sure you're right, unfortunately.
Faunus Funklebrot A living not from "his religious views", because he doesn't have a religion, but based on his views of religion in general. He's not religiously bias, because he does not support any particular religion above any other. His lack of belief in any god, would make religious bias a non-issue as President.
Jeff Kahle It makes me wonder how many politicians are pretending to be religious for that very reason. So far as we know, there could have been an athiest President already, or one in the near future. It's a shame that in today's society we have religiously instilled bigotry.
Refined Gentleman I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Obama came out as an atheist. I think trump is an atheist as well, he's just too stupid to realize it....
Sam Harris dishing out truth and reason, as always. Truly a great voice of these times!
Not really. Sam Harris is bogged down by all his liberal priors like most "intellectuals" in the West.
As an Iranian young man who spent a considerable time hearing Sam Harris's conversations on many occasions, I gotta tell you he's right about muslims and I'd support his view.

I am a Pakistani-Australian atheist and I admire Sam Harris. I lean towards the Left on almost all issues EXCEPT the Left's take on Islam (real liberals like Harris and Maher are exception, not the rule, unfortunately).
MY 5-CENTS ON THE SUBJECT:
Western world has had a profound impact on the whole planet and leads in everything one can think of.
Imran Ali I notice you didn't address my comment. Typical.

It's forbidden in Islam
That- is actually racist. Referring to the Arab people in such a way. You are aware they had an empire larger than the Roman empire at several point for centuries.
What about the other 1.5 billion muslims? Out of those , at least 600 million believe in radical ideology. 600 million...and that's a low estimate.

This kind of "elitist" one sided view of the situation in the Middle East is very dangerous and actually empowers Trump and his base.
Religion has always been a tool used in politics and war throughout history, however it is not the only factor to consider when dealing with this issue.
Ignoring the historical context of the modern day "radical Islam" or "Islamic terrorism" won't lead to any solutions. Instead, it will keep polarizing both ends of the spectrum and radicalize that region of the world even further.
The West's interests in the Middle East and the methods used (violence and propaganda) to archive it's goals play a huge role in the radicalization of Muslims, and to ignore this fact is very hypocritical of my two educated liberals here.
Let's take Iran as a case in Study:
Undisputed records show that Big Oil Companies, the US (CIA) and the UK played a direct role in overthrowing a democratically elected, secular president and replaced him with a ruthless dictator, with the purpose of accessing cheap oil and gas and also to have political control over the region. This in turn led to a revolt by the people of Iran making it easy for fundamentalist to take over the Iranian government.
On the other hand the US is very friendly with Saudi Arabia (which is the most conservative, religious and backward state in that region) because it's leaders dance to the tune of The US's music.
So clearly the religion is not the only (not even the main) contributing factor to the violence in the Middle East, nor the radicalism. Politics, money and power are, yet I didn't here them mention any of the above in the "elitist" conversation.
Niall T However you are not being liberal. Oh no, no, you are being something most self ascribed conservative & liberal people rarely experience - you are being rational.

Unfortunately the US instead of supporting tthe Liberal, secular and moderate leaders with a scientific academic background back in the 50's they preferred helping out illiterate dessert dwelling tribesmen that follow an extreme interpretation of religious writings
Well of course, leaders such as Nasser of Egypt were all about land reform, the nationalization of of the natural resources and equal right for women and minorities and back in the days these policies were too "socialist" for the Western powers. That's why the opted to work with the USSR

It's much more about the fundamental
disagreement with someone who requires terms of law and life that I consider limiting on human rights. Many of those someones follow the Koran. Of course, that isn't to say that there are not lingering and serious rights issues in the West as well. But to pretend there are not grave injustices committed worldwide continuously with Islam touted by the perpetrators as a primary motivation is just groundless.

Lesley Stahl: --in December you tweeted, and I quote you, "Calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. are offensive and unconstitutional."
Donald Trump: So you call it territories. OK? We're gonna do territories. We're gonna not let people come in from Syria that nobody knows who they are. Hillary Clinton wants 550 percent more people to come in than Obama--

Tradition and culture is not the problem as long as it abides by secular, liberal, democratic values.
"This is where we will piss off Batman again." LOL
I agree we need to be able to question and criticise ideas without the fear of being beheaded in public.

I'm pissed Sam isn't the President right now.
Let's be honest...Bill invites Sam only so he can talk over him and plug in his points. LMAO
Andy Doufreisn he does have a bad habit of doing that
Andy Doufreisn interesting idea
Biggest ego in american tv
Not really, it's just one hour is not enough for many topics.
Brilliant show, well spoken and to the point!!!!!!!!..I wish more could understand the simplicity of this topic that many should follow but sadly, many don't!!
Sam always nails it perfectly. Progressivism should be rooted in objectively correct values, not in some general notion of acceptance towards all traditions and cultures
a great conversation. I didn't think Bill interrupted to much. these guys are on the same page, Bill was just supporting Sams points.
sam harris for president
I am a former Muslim. I live in Kabul; I have seen women with than kind of Hijab( Chaderi ) almost every day. There was a sense of sadness and horror to it. Thanks to TV and internet, some of women can breath properly now, and do not use Chaderi no more.
Sam Harris is one of the many modern day philosophers that helped me to think critically. I’m now an ex Muslim.
"We have to admit that Europe has a problem that America does not have"
I'm waiting for literally ANY motherfucker from Europe to acknowledge that fact.
Sam's podcast is also outstanding. Highly recommended.
That cheeky batman-joke he slipped in had me in stitches for some reason...!
