    I shot this video in August 2010. This is the first time I have uploaded it to TH-cam. As mentioned in another posting, we are moving all the Grand Illusions videos to TH-cam, at a higher quality than they were previously available on our web site. Some are up to 4 years old, others just a couple of days old. Once they are all moved across (about 150 to go) then all our new videos will be posted immediately up to TH-cam.

    I do love the science in these videos... but it's really his accent that makes it awesome. Were I a billionaire, I would pay to have this guy read the newspaper to me every day in his soothing, plummy British voice. "...gracious me, troubles in Syria again..." Bliss.

    Just a heads-up I spent one of my lunch breaks from work watching dozens of these videos, but I now use them as background noise with which to sleep. It's exceedingly odd, but the voice of an English gentleman explaining how toys work is very soothing.

    This could be made into a BB gun using an electro magnet which attracts a heavy steel slug. The force of impact could be transferred to a lightweight ball bearing on the other side, which is allowed to escape the barrel at high velocity.

    Yes, you could theoretically create a perpetual motion machine, but some energy is lost along the way due to friction, so it would eventually stop.

  • @FrederikFalk21
    @FrederikFalk21 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The fired ball would be blocked by the ball already attached to the magnet. The magnet will not lose any force but the full potential energy of the fired ball will not be turned into kinetic energy since the 1st ball would be in the way.

  • @nilnoobgamer3180
    @nilnoobgamer3180 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Playing your video at slow speed makes it clear to see that ball's speed is increasing when it is comes closer to magnet.

  • @VoltisArt
    @VoltisArt 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    (Replying here, though it's mostly for Kombaiyashii.)
    If you had a round angled track like a roulette wheel without the nubs, low gravity and possibly low air pressure or a near-vaccum, you might be able to get a couple of loops out of it. Eventually any setup will terminate, however.
    What might be interesting would be to see if one could set multiples of these in a loop and run them around like dominoes, but with multiple iterations until the last bearing of each set.

  • @robertbackhaus8911
    @robertbackhaus8911 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Certainly - but it would not keep going. The attraction between the 'trigger' bearing is much greater than the attraction between the projectile bearing and its neighbor, as it is further away from the magnet. That is why the projectile bearing leaves at high speed. If you put it in a loop, the the first one would go quickly, the second, with a bearing between the magnets and the new trigger bearing, would barely work, if at all.

  • @jayduttshukla5216
    @jayduttshukla5216 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes. But as the cycle continues, the recoil will be shorter as the magnetic disks approach vertical section because of stronger gravitational effect. Since the recoil is shorter, the ejection speed of the next ball will be slower. So you won't get the perpetual motion machine you're dreaming of.

  • @metleon
    @metleon 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't see why not; it's travelling really fast. The problem is that when the ball bearing comes around the loop, it will hit a ball bearing, not the magnet, and won't shoot off the next ball bearing nearly as fast, if at all.

      It seems like the ball that is ejected receives more energy than the trigger ball delivers. If so, that's a working free energy machine. Now how to increase and harness it.

    • @ai-art-trending
      @ai-art-trending 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Notice how he has to exert some effort to pull the ball away from the magnet? That's where the energy comes from. Like stretching a piece of elastic, he is putting magnetic potential energy into the system, which is turned into kinetic energy (movement) as the ball is pulled towards the magnet.

    • @DamianReloaded
      @DamianReloaded 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My best guess is that the magnet accelerates the sliding ball in the last moment and than that force is enough to beat the magnetic tight of the last one. Is that it? ^_^

    • @SuperFreeEducation
      @SuperFreeEducation 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** It actually doesn't like he said at the last second the first ball speeds up because of the magnetic attraction and this energy is tranfered to the last ball in the series.

    • @hekticwoofer

      Damian Reloaded Basically the ball that gets fired is already getting pulled down the ramp away from the magnet and the ball rolling down the ramp is already getting pulled. One loses, one wins. I know this is from a year ago but i wanted to explain it to myself too lol

  • @DashieDasher

    Well you would need a magnet behind the next one to be hit, and since the magnet stays where it was in relation to the other balls, eventually the magnet would reach the front and there would be no more power. But you could make a long one that had quite a few balls and it might work for a while.

  • @FrederikFalk21
    @FrederikFalk21 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    To remove it you would have to invest a lot of energy in potential energy within the first ball by pulling it away from the magnet - this actually consumes more energy than the moves ball has in kinetic energy.

  • @BruceCrossan
    @BruceCrossan 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is almost like a over unity machine. He put so little energy into it, and got more out. If you could put the fired ball on a rail and send it back to the top to fire the next one. Friction and lack of replacement balls would probably stop such an idea from working.

  • @yousorooo
    @yousorooo 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    1. Make a track to guide the ball to the other side.
    2. Get a spring to push the magnet back to the original place.
    3. Put a motor somewhere in between.
    4. Perpetual energy.

  • @kevinminer280
    @kevinminer280 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, since the ball bearing is still attached (remember he has to pull it off each time and reset the mechanism) when the ball circled around, it would hit the ball, and one of two things would happen: it may launch ONE more ball in the same fashion, but similar to the final part of the video - it will reach equilibrium when the second ball loops back around, and nothing will happen.
    Of course, if you had enough time you could remove the ball and it would go forever, but that's adding energy.

  • @Kombaiyashii
    @Kombaiyashii 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    is there enough energy for the fired ball to do a loop the loop and hit it again on the other side?

      GAUSS.
      CARL FRED MOTHERFUCKING GAUSS IS HIS NAME.
      Gauss guns and coil guns are the same thing. They're pitifully simple. A wire is wrapped around the barrel of the weapon, electric charge is sent through the wire and timed to activate one series of coils after the other to pull the projectile forward. Projectile speeds up fast enough to kill out the end, person on receiving end dies. The end.
      Much like real guns, no physics degree is required to figure out how they work.. how well they work is another story.

    I have wondered for a long time: Why are steel balls called ball bearings? If the balls came out of a ball bearing the logical word would be bearing balls, not ball bearings. Or are they used as bearings for something I don't know of?

    • @chrismechanic2000
      @chrismechanic2000 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sablatnic they are called ball bearings because they are balls that are near perfect roundness which are used in a bearing race or so called ball bearing, called so because it is weight or force bearing, some bearings are made from softer materials like nylon or bronze and these bearings are called solid bearings.
      you can also get tapered bearings and roller bearings, but you are right, it is kinda ass backwards named.

  • @Torvaun

    Why not actually do the calculations using values estimated from the video to find out how much energy the launched ball has, and if it can be redirected back to the top of the track via a loop, instead of just insulting everyone who doesn't agree with your pre-conceived notions? Or is your country so superior at math and science that they have entirely forgone the scientific method?
